    The Japs do everything better

Betrayal at Krondor, which you describe as "Interactive fiction. Barely a game." has more open exploration than Romancing SaGa which, contrary to what you claim, is not open world. Just because you have an overworld doesn't mean your game is actually open world. Betrayal at Krondor also has a...

Alone in the Dark Reboot from THQ Nordic and the writer of SOMA

The original Alone in the Dark had hand-to-hand combat and platforming sections where, if you fell into water, your shotgun shells would be ruined and unusable. It was an experimental game that did lots of different things. I don't see how this is a return to roots though. The puzzles are your...

Eternity Avowed - Obsidian's first person action-RPG in the Pillars of Eternity setting - coming Fall 2024

Why can Mount & Blade, a 15-year old indie game made by a handful of people, afford spear animations - including jousting on horseback - but not a game funded by the biggest publisher in the world?

That actually proves my point. Wrath's maximum player count is only double Deadfire's, but the amount of active players is more than 5 times that of Deadfire. Wrath has better player retention and a longer tail than Deadfire, contrary to your claims. That tweet is from a few months ago...

You don't seem to understand that sequels, by being the more recent entry in a series, should have more active players by default. For example: Deadfire fails this basic test, because it was a massive flop. The first game only sold well because Kickstarter hype and false promises...

:nocountryforshitposters: Deadfire didn't have a long tail. It flopped so hard that more people are playing the first Pillars right now.

Emphasis on "back in those days." The Secret of Monkey Island came out 34 years ago. It took about a year to develop, not 4+ years like Pentiment. It was also more of an actual game than Pentiment, with an inventory and verb system, things which Pentiment lacks. This pre-release interview with...

A 150-200k sales is pretty bad for a game that was in development for 4+ years and had a decently sized team, even getting assistance from Microsoft after they acquired Obsidian. Indie games routinely sell more than that.

Phew, for a moment there I was worried things might get interesting or god forbid, even fun. :whatisfun:

Judas - narrative FPS set on a disintegrating starship from Ken Levine's Ghost Story Games

A cartoonishly binary moral choice that ends up having no real impact? Where have I seen that before?

World of Darkness Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 - VTMB sequel from The Chinese Room - coming Fall 2024

The lack of RPG elements isn't the only problem with this game. I've seen better combat animations in shovelware games. The art assets look generic and sterile. Just compare the mannequins in this to the ones in Condemned, a game from 2005. Complete incompetence all around.

Would Troika have folded if their releases weren't so buggy?

Arcanum came out around the same time as Baldur's Gate 2 and Diablo 2, which sold millions of copies. Conversely Wizardry 8, with its 3D graphics and extensive voice acting, flopped. System Shock 2 also flopped. The reasons for why games sold the way they did is a bit more complicated.

Would Troika have folded if their releases weren't so buggy?

With the exception of BioWare and Bethesda, which transitioned to console, all cRPG developers folded in the early 2000's. Troika actually held out longer than Sir-Tech, New World Computing and Black Isle.
