Our Steam page is now live. While the intro trailer doesn't have any gameplay footage yet (expect the first footage in 3-4 months), it comes with a sample of the ambient tracks. We'll post development updates on Steam as well, so if you're interested please wishlist or follow the game.

While we're on the subject of music, here's what Ryan Eston Paul, our composer, had to say about it:

"Obviously we are in the very early stages of composing here, but even now “The New World” offers so much in way of texture and color from which to create the soundtrack for this world. The cold and dark hue of a metal world starkly illuminated by artificial light. The fatalistic hope of people living within structured living quarters that they will never be able to leave. A world without fields or forest, but with an extended “frontier” of damaged and gang-infested compartments and decks. All of these contrasts and textures create an interesting whole that is equal parts old and new. Just the combination of a science fiction setting and the “western” theme of an endless frontier of lawless land to explore is enough to make my musical wheels really turn.

With “The Age of Decadence”, there was a clear musical voice that was created, one that eschewed from many of the prominent musical tropes of rpg games. Big epic brass and action-packed strings were largely traded for haunting children’s choirs, lonely lute plucks and cryptic whispers. From the beginning, the goal of the team has been to immerse the player in the feel and texture of the world, thus engulfing them in the story, and “The New World” will be no different in this regard. But even while bearing a similar musical philosophy to “The Age of Decadence”, the sound palette of “The New World” has me very excited. Expect synthesizers and dark, unearthly electronic sounds, but also expect a few surprises."

Could have just deleted my thread, no need to retardo it, lol. We posted threads at the same time. Oh well! Time to wishlist.

God damn, you're quick, Infinitron. Anyway, after Age of Decadence, I'm very excited to play the studio's next full-fledged RPG. On to the wishlist it goes!

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
The texts with several sentences on the concept trailer fade away a bit too quickly.

Also, the name of the ship is rather bland, I'm afraid.

Starfarer, couldn't people who had been capable enough to create a generation ship be also more adept at naming things?

My suggestion: USS Christina Avellonica

The name IS bland but it's fitting for a retrofitted cargo ship (i.e. not a state of the art colony ship).

Did you guys have other names pop up in your minds, or was The New World the first choice?

We've considered many other names but The New World does reflect the nature of the setting and the game better. From the site:

Why The New World?

What do people think of when they hear "The New World", absent a video game?

  • A time when people were migrating in their millions across the Atlantic to the strife and uncertainty of an unknown destination
  • People fleeing an awful life of toil for a new almost entirely unknown life, which unbeknownst to them would also be full of toil
  • People of all different religions, origins and castes jammed together on the voyage; even rich and poor, otherwise always segregated, shared the same boat
  • European pioneers, the migration West, the Mayflower, colonization, it's a package of all the sub-themes
What will people see when they're playing the game?

  • The passengers of the Ship are headed to a New World
  • The Ship itself is a New World, away from Earth for so many generations it might as well be a myth
  • The player is like one of those hapless migrants of the five hundred year migration to North America, surrounded by conflicting factions, different religions, philosophies and ideals
  • The player is headed for the absolutely unknown in a chaotic, dangerous environment where he must live by violence or his wits

I would argue the only way it would truly feel like a new world is if act one was aboard the ship you were born in, and the following two are when you reach the planet and witness the faction dynamic concerning this new territory. That being said, I perfectly see your other points about heading to the unknown and uncertainty, and what I said might be too much work.

The ship is the new world, not the destination planet.

PS. IF the game is well received, we'd do a sequel set on the planet. From the intro questionnaire:

The Ship is en route to Proxima B, an Earth-like planet orbiting Proxima Centauri. Ninety percent of its surface is covered with water, but the planet is slightly bigger than Earth, providing approximately half of Earth’s landmass. This should be more than enough to support a prosperous colony, a new beginning.

After launch a deep space probe transmitted highly detailed images of the surface, which revealed one minor setback: this very habitable world is already inhabited. Since the voyage is estimated to take close to 400 years, it’s possible that by the time the Ship arrives the colonists will encounter a mature civilization, corresponding to Earth’s Late Middles Ages.

If that’s the case:

1. What setback? Though unanticipated, slaves will provide an excellent resource for the colony.

2. We’ll make every effort (within reason) to accommodate the savages, setting aside clearly demarcated zones for them to pursue their own lives.

3. We must make every effort to live in harmony with the new world’s native sons and learn all we can from them.

4. We will be guests in this new world, living among the local population and accepting their culture and traditions as our own.

I suppose it's a matter of prespective, since my point was primarily built on "you were born in the ship, and as such it's just a world from your POV."

The problem with "The New World" is that the name is too generic, to indistinct and it will automatically push the game back to some n-th page on Duck Duck Go or other search engine even after it would be mentioned in mainstream media (which might not happen). It might have been better to go with less appropriate name but more distinct one (like "No Truce with the Furies").

On a side note, can you tell us how many accounts have TNW on Steam wishlist so far?

Searchable name is a thing of the past. Mainstream gaming media matters a lot less than it's used to (like 90% less0. Two things matter today:

- are people talking about it, sharing impressions, recommending, mentioning, etc
- visibility on Steam and GOG

You can have the most cleverly named game ever that's super easy to find on a search engine, but if you have no Steam visibility, you're dead in the water.

On a side note, can you tell us how many accounts have TNW on Steam wishlist so far?

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Iron Tower's/Vault Dweller's/Vince D. Weller's/Vince Weller's Proxima B. I assume there's a default ending to the New World. Anyone care to guess what it'll be? Place your bets.

Alpha Centauri meets Colonization RPG. This game needs to be made. I hope the natives'll have different polities with different attitudes.

You mean aliens? Or humans who by some means got there before you did and blew themselves back to the dark age?

Aliens with distinctive culture, religion and development path (none of the treehugging Avatar stuff).

Both shows are hilarious - especially Vikings. Ragnar swims to England where he kills entire armies with a rusty spoon. Next episode: Ragnar fucks Freyja while headbutting Surtr, crushing Fenrir's skull with one hand, and throttling Jörmungandr with the other.
