edit 3 (03/05/2015): Ars Techinca's Kyle Orland released new Steam Gauge data for 2014, which presumably is a more accurate estimation than SteamDB's data.

I picked out RPGs from an entire ranking (ranked by actual players, not owners). All numbers are estimated owned (and played) copies, unlike sampled numbers from SteamDB:

-----

SteamDB has an interesting page, that showing the number of owners for every games on Steam, sampled from a certain number (310,625 as of now) of users.

I suspect they used a similar methodology to Ars Technica's Steam Gauge, though I don't know how much efforts SteamDB poured for accuracy compared to Steam Gauge.

So this is just for fun (and Codexian debate and butthurt). I just picked out RPGs released in 2014 from the page.

- Data sampled from 310,625 users.
- Some games(*) were featured in bundle(s). Naturally their numbers are largely inflated, especially ones that featured in Humble Bundle.
- Of course, discount is also a major factor.
- For Kicktarter games, these numbers including copies redeemed by backers.
- edit: Games released earlier in the year generally ranked higher than ones released later.

Results are a bit skewed by the fact that the games released in january will have been on multiple steam sales and the ones from november haven't.

Too bad you can't really effectively extrapolate these numbers to products owned / total steam accounts because of all the shitty dupe-CS GO accounts.

Some faggot also has 4,593 games on Steam. I wonder how many of those he has actually started.

Any particular reason as to why the sample size is limited to just over 300k?
It'll be a sample of everyone who has logged into Steam via SteamDB. Which inherently causes some selection bias, though I don't know how much of an effect it would have.

I GUESSED that it's random sampling by using data crawler. You may be right.

Some of those numbers, like Might and Magic X and Legend of Grimrock 2, look horrific.

Blobber doesn't sell? haha.

Blackguards was about on MMX's level sales wise before it started popping up in every bundle under the sun, so its numbers are probably enormously inflated (as if it beating D:OS didn't tell you that already).

Well, 10% of those folks own Legend of Grimrock... so... I don't know what to make of it. Steam users are cheapasses? People are waiting for both games to go on sale? I don't know.

According to SteamDB data, currently 4.3% of owners of Grimrock 1 owns Grimrock 2. But Grimrock 1 has been bundled 3 times and discounted many times, so the number is significantly inflated.

its gives you a rough nr, but 300k users its low for Steam. So multiply that by 100 and you should get the better nrs.

Last week Transistor developer announced that the game has sold over 600K, it's including copies sold on PS4 and PS Vita. So, to get a better number, I guess you have to multiply it by smaller number than 100, or require a more sophisticated formula than mere multiply.

indeed, i was thinking in the idea of sales, since i know some of the developers in the list and some of their rough sales nrs.

FF XIII is half as cheap as WL2 and actually FF XIII is a "mainstream" game.

Sold over 600K copies or sold enough to make 600K USD in revenue?

Just curious.
