Surprised no one else was quicker on the decline button...

http://gamasutra.com/view/news/214532/Amazons_bid_for_the_living_room_The_99_Amazon_Fire_TV.php

At a special Amazon event today, the company finally revealed the small black box that it's been working on to slot underneath your living room television: The $99 Amazon Fire TV, which isavailable now.

With Amazon's living room device, the company says that it was looking to solve numerous problems with similar devices, including search and performance issues, coupled with closed ecosystems. "How do we make the complexity disappear?" the company asked, and Fire TV is apparently the answer.

According to Amazon's press release, the Fire TV comes with a quad-core processor and a dedicated GPU, the sort that you'd usually find in smartphones.

It has 2GB of RAM, dual-band Wi-fi, and it's roughly seven tenths of an inch thin -- shorter than a dime, as demonstrated during its unveiling. It also comes with a remote control that can be controlled with your voice via a microphone.

According to Amazon, the Fire TV is capable of streaming content at resolutions of up to 1080p and supports HDMI and optical audio-out, so it should support up to 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound.

Fire TV is based on Android and HTML, and Amazon says that a "huge selection" of apps and games are already on the way for the device.
What about games?
Amazon's Peter Larsen said that games consoles these days are too expensive, and that his company is looking to fill the void between proper gaming on your TV, and a price point that is affordable -- hence the $99 price tag.

Mike Frazzini from Amazon Games subsequently took to the stage to talk about which devs are already on-board. Ubisoft, Take-Two, Disney, Gameloft, EA and Double Fine were all named, whileMinecraft, The Walking Dead, NBA2K14, Asphalt 8 and Despicable Me: Minion Rush were highlights of the 100+ games Amazon claims are available on the platform at launch. The company also promises that thousands more games are coming to the Fire TV in the coming months, once the Fire TV app is released and touch-optimized games are made available.

Frazzini then revealed the Fire Game Controller, a $39.99 gamepad that comes with some Amazon Coins currency to get you started. Games will apparently cost around $1.85 on average.

He then demonstrated how the controller works with the device by booting up a Fire TV-specific port of Minecraft and giving it a quick play.

As for original IP, a third-person shooter called Sev Zero was thrown up on screen. It's apparently the first game to come out of Amazon Game Studios, Amazon's own internal game development group, and Amazon says there are plenty more Fire TV games in the works.

The Fire TV is only being sold in Amazon's U.S. store right now, though company representatives would not commit to saying that it will never be available in other regions. Gamasutra heard last year about how Amazon was preparing game developers for its upcoming living room device, which will no doubt be competing with other similar Android-based microconsoles like the Ouya and the MadCatz M.O.J.O. in the months to come.

No android games or Netflix for you Eurotrash!

Seriously though it's an Amazon labeled Ouya, but with their massive market power don't be surprised if it sells like hotcakes. I don't personally see a need because my cheaper blu ray player streams all that shit as well, but hey whatever.

I don't mind it. Looks like the games are clearly targeted at children and "family." I'm not the targeted demographic.

Well their big exclusive for launch is a shooter and tower defense hybrid. With the talent they have been buying up I am sure more exclusives are coming. Whether they appeal to us or not is another question, but they are going for adults and "gamers" as well.

I could actually see this thing taking off. Seems like it will be more appealing to the masses than the current crop of consoles. And unlike the ouya it's being made by people who actually know what they're doing.

In what way is this better than what is currently out right now except in price?

If all you want is streaming it's actually more expensive than a decent blu ray player with all those apps built-in. If you want the android gaming on your TV aspect I would guess your main concern is likelihood of good games coming to the system, which Amazon's name does kind of imply. They hired a ton of people and already have an exclusive out. Whether those games are ones you will want to play is the question.

I doubt there's gonna be 40 hour CRPGs on the thing.

But there are

Except you may not want a pad to play it.

Yep. Cheap as hell and keeps kids entertained. If the performance is on the upper end of the smartphone spectrum it should have "just enough" oomph - provided the games aren't all poor smartphone ports, this could really change the console scene in some interesting ways.

It's not, but that's the point. Parents don't want to plunk hundreds and hundreds down on game consoles for their kids. Same reason why handhelds are so popular with kids, but this theoretically has the added benefit of allowing a living room experience and local multiplayer. Not to mention it has the same "parent-friendly" benefit of filling the same role as the Apple TV.

Hey another Microsoft of gaming. Can't wait for them to waste a lot of talent.
Unlike Microsoft, which only sustains itself due to its stranglehold on the PC market, Amazon has a track record of successful projects in the digital marketplace. They've done remarkably well expanding their business from just online retail to selling ebooks (along with the hardware to read them), music, movies and TV shows. This box is clearly meant to be their attempt to tackle all the other stream box products out there, which makes sense given their digital movie and TV libraries. The fact that it will play games seems like almost an afterthought, just an added benefit of hardware powerful enough to seemlessly stream at 1080p.

Microsoft spent billions developing the xbox, bought up some of the biggest name developers in an attempt to get exclusives made for their console, sold the 360 at a loss (I think, not gonna bother looking this up), spent god knows how much developing the motion capture technology for the kinect, etc. All of these things have been disasters. Quite frankly, I'm surprised Microsoft's shareholders aren't demanding the CEO's head on a pike for keeping the xbox around this long.

I'm not saying this thing will do well. I am saying that it has a much better chance to make an impact on the console market than anything I've seen in a while outside the big three.

Yeah, Amazon are incrementalists and quite successful at that, whereas Microsoft are just repressive idiots who don't understand consumers.

They've picked up quite some talent, mostly people that were abused and fled by the likes of MS, EA & Co. in the first place.

So it's exactly the same as the Ouya but with more money behind it. I guess people will find it about as useful.

Eh, for our purposes, no. But it probably will make some money.

Amazon can brute force it into millions of homes. It's what comes after that which will be interesting.

I could see this console, based on the previews, competing with Nintendo.

So it's exactly the same as the Ouya but with more money behind it. I guess people will find it about as useful.

Not exactly, it seems like it's being positioned more like a set-top box, with features and price comparable to Roku or Apple TV. It doesn't even come with a controller by default (and also apparently supports generic HID controllers, so you don't even need to use the Amazon one).

It actually strikes me that this is what the XBone should have been, given its stated focus. For all of Microsoft's attempt to sell the actual XBone as a kind of premium STB, a $500 machine with all media streaming apps stuck behind a paywall makes no fucking sense as a home media center, and what it ended up being is an expensive and underpowered console with a gimmicky peripheral. Amazon's product, on the other hand, seems like it might actually have a market, especially with their powerful ecosystem supporting it.

Although the primary difference is that Amazon actually knows how to run a successful consumer-oriented business without trying to fleece its customers at every opportunity, unlike any of the console platform holders.

I concede to your point.

This is going to be XBOX all over again : nobody here is going to care because it is not for us, but you will see. Oh you will see the decline.

People who can't tell HD graphics apart by numbers of polygons will wonder why buy a PS4 when this is cheaper.
Why buy a 40$ game when you can get the same as Free To Play?
Oh, yeah, and why can you lose in games ? Losing is not fun !

Console games will adapt to be even more dumbed down.

AAA are going to be even more shitty.

And the only hope of the PC Master Race is going to be indie games and retrogaming and oh wait, this all has already happened. Carry on. Don't mind me. Let the peasants eat their own shit.

With all these consoles and quasi-consoles coming out, the paranoid in me is getting the itch that another 'console crash' is coming a la the 80s.
