Yes.
:dealwithit:
All of those things can be art...
Except the Lamborgini which can only be stupid art, i dont know how else to call it. Its kinda like that video that was posted earlier... Its in the same vein as that. Wtf was the point?
But the rest can certainly be art... Why not? I bet if Da Vinci made a warhammer figurine it would be considered art, even if it sucked.

I get what youre saying about games... But Hitman videos arent part of the gameplay so they are art... So the question is can gameplay be art then? Well i dont know... Thinking about this shit makes my brain hurt and i cant do it anymore. I dont think its even worth trying. They dont make good games anymore so whats the point.

nope.

people do not play hitman to appreciate the aesthetic value of the videos. people play the game to have fun dragging bodies into dumpsters.

the game was intended to value gameplay over aesthetics. a game maker will usually have entertainment value as their top priority, and artistry somewhere further down.

For example:

let's say that holes are fashionable right now, and you're a potter. You make a pot that has to hold water, but you also want to make your pot look cool. you add holes, since that's the cool thing to do, but you will never add holes to the lower half of the pot. doing that would make the pot unusable. usability has a higher priority than aesthetics. therefore, that pot really can't be considered an art piece, because the maker designed it to be used, with the holes as a decoration.

a Lamborghini cannot be considered art, because it exists to be used, and usability is more important than aesthetics. The engineers did not add anything to the car that could possibly slow it down just to make it look better. Compromises to looks had to be made to maintain aerodynamics. this is because usability is the top priority. A pretty car that doesn't run, or runs terribly will be considered a piece of shit by a majority of the people who pass judgement on it.

art is only art because it is created for the main purpose of having aesthetic value.

aesthetics: appreciating something based on its own properties independent on how it can be used by people. the paint job of a car is irrelevant to how well it runs, the shape of a flower vase, the design of a box.

Mona Lisa:
art. has no use other than to exist and to be appreciated.

empire state building:
not art. top priority is to be a working building. then decorated to look nice

Lamborghini Miura
not art. top priority is to be fast and to sell a lot of them.

Warhammer figure:
probably not art. top priority is to be used in the game. it could be art if the warhammer game did not exist, then it would fall under figurine/statues, which are art.

Hitman
not art. top priority is to be a working not buggy video game that people will buy. cut scenes being nice is not the top priority.

tldr: just because a thing has some art on if to make it look nice, doesn't make the thing itself art.

Err...sculpture is art bro. This is nothing more than a blown up "figurine"

Michaelangelo did not make David to use as a piece for a wargame.

nor did he make David to be sold to anyone. (although he was commissioned to make it, which is fundamentally different)

Function does not matter. There are chess sets that are made of porcelain that are serious works of art and craftmanship. And you can use them to play a wargame (of sorts).

Video games are "art" if the term refers to the result of human creative acts.

WHO GIVES A FUCK!

Caring if something you do/make or especially consume is art or not, is for vapid people with low self-esteem. I'm huge film buff, and my tastes are rather monocled, especially compared to the most people, but do I care if Citizen Kane, 2001 or one of the John Ford's masterpieces are considered art? FUCK NO!

Especially when seeing and talking to the people who considers themselves as "Serious art lovers" or people who considers themselves as "An Artist!", you can't find more fucking pretentious and pompous douchebags around. Film makers who considers themselves "An Artists" makes the most pretentious fucking pieces of shit I can imagine. So do I want to play games from people who thinks they're making "Art"? FUCK NO!

Yeah i hate artists too, dont get me wrong. Im not some "art lover"... If you ask me they should limit themselves to a couple of cool things here and there and not OVERDO it. But its like they just cant help themselves.

I agree with this... This would be a case of stupid art or just plain bad art where an artist overdoes it. A recent example, are the second and the third Jason Bourne movies, with the fast cutting. Where every cut is two-three seconds and the director said how this is supposed to represent Bourns fucked up memory or something. Well good, but i cant even watch the goddamn movie because of it... Stupid asshole. He had to do it, he just had to be a fucking artist. I hate them.
