The current Atari (which is thinly related to the original Atari, Inc) revealed some details about their new console Ataribox.

Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.

Inspired by classic Atari design elements (such as the iconic use of wood, ribbed lines, and raised back); we are creating a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD). We intend to release two editions: a wood edition, and a black/red edition.

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so. There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead. We’ll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!

Hope you like where we are taking this, we’ll be in touch soon.

The Ataribox Project team.

Hey Atari!

See that giant slot in the middle there? The one from one of your earlier models?

Put that on your new Atari box. Fully working, fully compatible with your entire cartridge catalog from the old Atari line. Then you have a seller on your hands.

Otherwise your little box is nothing but a hipster toy that'll end up on eBay with a 300% mark-up.

Because they want to market it to hipsters, there will not be one of those ports so old plebs can play cartridges. I'm sure they think a slot would ruin the console's "aesthetic". Perhaps they will release a cartridge reader that plugs into the USB port, though.

From the announcement:

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

By "current gaming content" I am guessing they mean offering shovelware prestigious android tablet ports like they did on the OUYA.

The wooden one is at least one of the best looking consoles to ever get released.
As for the rest; yeah I'm sure some Ouya kind of thing.

I'm sure the goal is to sell old games for five bucks a pop, similar to Nintendo's Virtual Console. A cartridge slot would probably run counter to that.

"or fucking anything, really. But we CAN tell you this: it will look sweet"

Oh right, it reminds me of this classic.

PES: What is your favorite story from working at Bethesda over the years?
Todd: Pete Hines won’t let me tell it. But it’s awesome. So awesome.

"Current Gaming Content" - surely not PS4/XBone content.

I expect something akin to SHIELD / Switch hardware in there - the question remains if it will be an Ouya 2 for mobile games or tries to imitate Nintendo with own Atari titles. It already has been proven that there's no need for an Ouya (and almost all streaming boxes (Apple TV, Fire Stick) have mobile titles on them already, so they'd need to produce something unique and focus on the core crowd who buys such a niche product.

Some notes regarding specs:

Storage 32GB eMMC, external HD, SD card
RAM 4GB DDR4 RAM
Memory 32GB eMMC
CPU Bristol Ridge A10
GPU Radeon R7

AMD Bristol Bridge is redesing of Carrizo. It's... 2 years old I think and IIRC doesn't have any improvements of later AMD Ryzen CPU's (carried to APU's). It's integrated graphics should be quite powerful though.

For the price I can understand it can't have anything too fancy but still, just 4 GB of RAM. I suppose it's alright for browsing but what if you have 20 tabs open in your Firefox or whatever browser and try to listening to your music at the same time.

Tempting, but no preorder from me. I just can't trust this thing has necessarily much longevity in miscellany multimedia machine and just for playing old games that can be emulated even in old mobile phones, it's just too expensive.

In other hand that re-imagined Atari joystick looks really interesting.

Something I missed in my previous post.

This device isn't shipping but on next year which makes their outdated choice for CPU even worse. It would be very different if it had Raven Ridge inside, but now this has mostly nostalgia / dollar value, with very little performance / dollar ratio.

What a disappointment.

Atari VCS architect quits, citing six months of missed payments
Rob Wyatt: "As a small company, we have been lucky to survive this long."

Atari VCS architect Rob Wyatt has resigned from the company, alleging that Atari owes him and his company Tin Giant "over six months" worth of owed invoices.

The Register reports the resignation, with Wyatt saying in a statement that "As a small company, we have been lucky to survive this long."

Wyatt and Tin Giant signed onto the project in 2018 to help design the retro hardware. In a separate piece last week also from The Register, concerns were expressed about Wyatt's role on the project given that he had recently co-founded a startup called The Last Gameboard.

At the time, project lead Michael Arzt told GamesIndustry.biz that Tin Giant's work was "largely concluded" but that Wyatt remained on the project.

Wyatt told The Register that his departure had nothing to do with his startup, which "has been around since prior to my engagement with Atari, silently doing R&D."

In response to Wyatt's departure, Atari has shared a statement with USGamer:

"It is Atari's policy not to comment on an isolated matter under dispute, only to say that the Atari VCS project has always been a team effort and its success has never been and will never be dependent on any single individual or partner.

"We remain confident in the Atari VCS as the entire team works diligently to bring forth its vision according to plan, and we will continue to communicate accordingly over the coming weeks and months, including hands-on presentations to key media and partners planned for later this fall."

Additionally, Atari published a blog post today unrelated to Wyatt's departure, announcing that the system has entered pre-production ahead of its planned spring 2020 launch. The project, which was announced in July 2017, has been delayed multiple times and has seen numerous missteps from a promised showing of prototypes turning out to be non-functional boxes to concerns about a lack of native apps and original games.

To the latter concern, Atari said the following to USGamer:

"Atari wishes to inform you that some of your questions indicate that you possess information that is incorrect and/or outdated. In addition, some aspects of the Atari VCS project clearly have been leaked to you in violation of existing confidentiality agreements, and Atari therefore hereby reserves its rights in that respect."
