So I have Windows 10 and am having trouble with lag on Avernum 4. I found a thread that proposed a solution:

http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/...down-issues-suggested-fix-included-in-thread/

However, I am unable to run either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit on my version of Windows 10. Yes, the compatibility toolkit is not compatible...

Anyone have any other ideas on how I can get the lag issue with Avernum 4-6 fixed?

You could try either dgvoodoo2 or ddwrapper. Both offer replacements for ddraw.

I used dgvoodoo2 to fix issues I had with Geneforge a while back, though I had to fuck around with the settings quite a lot.

there are some ports of wine to windows(heh), have you ever given those a try?
e.g,

Yeah, I've always had mixed results with wined3d.

I did get good results running PST with it a few years back. Never been able to get it working with anything else.

So while looking up the ddwrapper and dgvodoo options Tacgnol mentioned, I came across another program called DXWnd and Avernum 4 is working fantastically well through the full screen mode. So thanks for getting me on the right path!

I'm finding this game is a real joy to play. It has an easy to understand local and world map system, an automated and detailed journal that tells me the quest giver, his/her location, and what I need to do, and skill-based levellng which allows for the tailoring of character builds. The game is huge, with me already being a few hours in, but not even 1/10th through the world map. Combat is turn-based and tactical on a square-based grid. There are already several side quests I cannot beat due to not having enough skill points to access certain areas, forcing me to consider spreading points in areas just to get into an area I can't reach or read a scroll I cannot yet understand. And it's all open-world with tons to explore. I'm running with a melee fighter with a few points in tool use, a priest with a few points in melee fighting, and two sorceresses.
