Paradox have published the second episode in their three-part series of introductory videos for Harebrained Schemes' BattleTech. This episode in particular is very much worth watching, as it provides the closest look at the game's strategic campaign layer that we've had so far. It's more complex than I expected, with detailed team management and mech upgrade options as well as RPG-style CYOA text events. Check it out:

Looks pretty slick, doesn't it? I'm surprised that Harebrained haven't talked up this aspect of the game more.

Standin' pretty. In this dust that was a city.
I wonder how well will they handle actual MW lore, because even for a patchwork setting that it is, its significantly more nuanced and established than Shadowrun and will seriously suck when just smeared over with moeblob characters delivering grade B fanfic walls of text.

Apart from the quality issue, their approach to the canon/lore issue seems to be to stick things out in the Periphery in an area where events have been less documented in BT lore so far, and obviously making it focus on a fledgling merc outfit rather than running the Dragoons or something. Already seen some fan sperging on the forum about how, no matter how the story mission pans out, future events mean it doesn't leave a lasting mark on the timeline anyway.

If the game is successful and the vague plans to eventually move on to Fourth Succession War/Clans etc come to pass, I guess that'll be more challenging in terms of balancing new and established events without inserting too many incongruous interludes. Then again, previous games were happy to delve into major events like the Refusal War.

Any developer that lets lore stand in the way of a good and quality gameplay is a retard. Any fans that expect devs to put Lore on #1 spot are even bigger retards and should be completely ignored.
