Quick question about BG 2 EE. Did they put that wild mage Neera somewhere off the beaten path this time?. Or did they put her in a place that forces you to avoid the whole north of town like they did in BG:EE. Resulting in the party getting hammered my red wizards?

Pretty sure on either your first or second visit to the Bridge District in Athkatla she'll make herself known. Essentially unavoidable.

I can live with that. Just not having her in the in the middle of northern Beregost forcing you to go around the entire town to avoid her and her damn wizard fight. What about the other editions to the game? No cowled wizard assault teams drop podding from high orbit because you walked into the copper coronet or some such crap?

Dorn is completely avoidable. You may not even notice him since he is somewhat camouflaged in the stone background. Neera, Rasaad and Hexxat have a short conversation that triggers when you go near but you can just ignore them after that.

That said, the added content is BG2EE is better than in the first.

You don't want to avoid Neera in Bg2EE. Suffer her long enough until you get access to Thay Enclave in Merchant District. Then you can use that enclave to get cool stuff from their shops (high level spells) or fight them for one of the best mid game battles in Bg2.

Did they remove the config menu? I remember BG 2 had an quite extensive one. Or is it just maxed out now? Such as pathfinding and resolution.

Also one thing has been bothering me for a long time. I remember one finding a sword in the pirates house in Brynnlaw. It was an elven sword, that in the description, said it was was used to guide surface elves through the Underdark. Yet with the TOB expansion the sword was removed. I never played base BG2 after the expansion. Does anyone else remember that sword?

I believe those are maxed by default but I don't know about all the settings and options the original games had.

Are you sure it wasn't from some mod? I don't think I've ever seen such sword, even when going through game files with EEKeeper.

Insert clever insult here
I've never heard of SOA items being removed. I think some stuff was moved around to fit with TOB better but that's it.

The options for BG2 were never inside the game (or some were) but in the config utility that you had to run separately. I won't touch the EE's so dunno if it's still there.

It must have been a mod then. The only mods I ever recall trying came off a PC gamer or PC zone magazine. The mods are long since lost to time by now. But the first was a mod that added stuff to the copper coronet. Such as a shady merchant that would con you out of money for items that were clearly fake. Such as a magic carpet that was missing the activation phase to make it fly and stuff like that. It even had a knock off Sting. Its description claims that if glows then orcs are near. But it is always glowing. Meaning that either orcs are omnipresent, or that the sword is paranoid. Another mod I used was an expanded inventory for the adventurers mart. A wider selection of lore based weapon, armour and some second edition spells not in the base game. But I don't recall ever going past Athkatla using any mod. Since they were unstable. Such as one that added a new area and expanded the map. They all just gave me crash loops.

I'm guessing that I must at some point have failed to clean my files after trying a mod that didn't work then. Shame. I really did like that sword.

Path search nodes and visual settings are maxed but framerate is not (go to baldur.ini in My Documents to change it).

In my (limited) testing it hasn't caused any probs, other than voices not having time to finish in scripted cutscenes (which doesn't bother me and happened in the original, too).

60 AI updates per sec or go home, and IF Beamdog introduced bugs just by upping the framerate then that's just laughable.

It increases the general game speed. Everyone starts running like ants out of a burning anthill.

I take it Rasaad sucks and should be avoided until BG 2EE?

The areas for his quest are engaging enough, I think you get two new ones so the chance for loot is always appreciated. Might be worth doing them and then dropping him.

I remember he sucks as both an interesting character and as a monk also, plus he runs faster than the rest of the party so I definitely had to save him from charging to his death quite often.

Ok. I have run into a problem. I decided to pick up Neera to get her quest done before I kick her out the party to pick up Minsc. The problem is that I can thrash the Hobnob goblin and his pals in the cave without issue. But I just can't deal with the two wizards and the bodyguards that focus Neera after meeting the lard arse wild mage she wants me to find for her. My options are to either go farm some Ankhegs and get some level 3 spells and a wand of fireballs and spam it during the fight. Or pick up someone like Rasaad or Branwen and carry on with the main quest and come back at a later date. But I don't want to keep Minsc out of the party for to long. It just feels wrong doing the main story playing without the canon party.

I guess my other option is to just wait until Siege of dragonspear arrives while I just grab some golden pantaloons and transfer over to BG 2.

If you're not sure if you should keep a quest item, just store them all in some convenient place where they are easy to retrieve if needed.

Buff her before fight?
Use invisibility potion on her during it?

Not going to work since I can't cleave down the ogre to get to the wizards fast enough before they fear the entire party. If I had a few hold spells and either a fireball or stinking cloud I could manage it. But that is a level or so away.

Also. Where can I find a scimitar+ 1 or so? Jaheira is really lacking in a one handed weapon.

On map with spiders queen in Cloakwood, if you go south from starting location. There is a body there with it.
But in BG1EE you can get a +1 club for her. It can be easily missed because graphically it looks like normal club.
I don't remember where you get it, I think from one of the groups you kill by exploring maps.

I managed to complete the quest for Neera. One fireball and spamming fear and sleep was enough to barely get it done. Neera doesn't have any educational dialog after her quest is complete right? If not I'm kicking her from the party and taking her gem bag with me. Since as far as I can tell its the only one in the game.

When playing as a mage when is it best to multi class? I was thinking of finally trying a mage/thief after all these years. The first character I ever played was a thief all the way to throne of bhaal. And I really liked the control it offers. And also. How does being a Mage/thief effect BG 2? I remember the stronghold was picked depending on class. With Mages getting the sphere and thieves getting the guild HQ (and tons of income) do you get to pick or does the first class dictate the stronghold?

If you're not romancing her you can pretty safely boot her after her quest, yep.

I believe with multiclass you choose the stronghold you'd like and it locks you out of the other. So if you choose planar sphere, you can't get the thief guild.

I started playing BG2 EE, been a long time since I last spent a significant amount of time with an IE game, so my memory might be a bit fuzzy, but two things bother me.

1. What's up with backstabs? The new UI gives you an exact dmg range for your chars, but, apart from crits, I'm yet to see a backstab that actually dealt at least 4x (current multiplier for my assassin) minimum dmg or more. It's even funnier when you get a "backstab for quadruple damage" message, but the actual number isn't even divisible by four. You also seem to miss a lot when trying to backstab, which isn't something I remember.
2. Learning spells. Afair 18 int should mean 90% chance to learn a spell from a scroll? Well, in BG2 EE it obviously doesn't, I often need to Q-L like 5-6 times to learn something.

Was it always like that or did the prestigious incliners from Beamdog fucked with the game in a yet another way?

1. You have to attack from the back and be in stealth. Also I don't think all damage is 4x but I don't know the exact math.
2. Learning chances were always funny. I just reduce difficulty to normal when learning and then return to core. Also a specialist wizard has 15% penalty when learning spells not from his school but 15% bonus for his school spells
