You could literally pick any random 12 months in the 90s and get a good series of masterpieces. God damn decline.

I think 1998 has it - no one has mentioned the original StarCraft which also came out then. Add that to Thief: the Dark Project, Baldur's Gate, Half-Life etc and you've got a bunch of stone cold classics right there.

2004 was also a year I remember fondly - the original Far Cry, Half Life 2, Rome: Total War, Chronicles of Riddick, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Vampire: Bloodlines, KOTOR II etc

Basically it's the last gasp before the full 3d appocalypse. After that 2d games were basically done. Until then things just got better and better.
