Changed my mind on which Sci-Fi flick is my FOAT.

    Well written.

And it's all right...no worries bro. Sometimes we take things a bit too seriously around here and get carried away. Regardless, I'm glad to see that you've learned the error of your ways and have grown into someone capable of appreciating good film. :salute:

A The Thing fansite (Outpost 31) was the very first online forum I ever attended. Still a cool community, too. It is my favorite horror/sci-fi film by far. Stupid-awesome special effects, has one of the greatest move-scares ever, and the setting is so damn claustrophobic and the paranoia of the characters just bleeds through the damn screen. The movie got buried by E.T., though. That adorable little alien was really a Hollywood assassin and it kinda fucked The Thing pretty hard during their releases. The special effects, cast, and setting got undeservedly overshadows. Always nice to see new converts praising the masterpiece for what it is.

(And I do agree with others that Blade Runner is the best sci-fi film ever and it's not really a close competition in my opinion.)

I, like many of you, found the thing to be an excellent film. Are Carpenter's other films good? I think I've only seen From Dusk Till Dawn, I don't recall it being much good but it was a long time a go.

That's not a Carpenter movie, unless you mean "Vampires". I was very disappointed by it. Fuck, "John Carpenter + James Woods" sounded so full of win. :(
As for his other good films, as I earlier posted, I think these : "Big trouble in little China", "Assault on precinct 13", "Escape from New York", "They live", "Prince of darkness" are quite safe ("Prince of darkness" is a bit borderline though, mainly because of low budget, but if you like Alice Cooper, give it a go).
The rest is more a matter of taste, I personally love "Ghosts of Mars", which is usually considered as complete crap, while not giving a shit about either "Fog" or "Christine" which are usually praised.

DarkStar, great movie. Effects rival Star Wars and it was made for like 1% of its budget.
Halloween is called a classic, but it seemed like just another 70-80's horror movie to me, like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on bla etc.
Attack on Precinct 13? I forget. Think that's a Carpenter movie. Nothing special.
    Fog, crap.
    Escape from NY, great movie.
Christine, decent, for a Steve King novel. Actually probably the best adaptation, short of Carrie.
Starman, been too long since I saw it. Don't think I thought it was anything special.
Big Trouble in Little China, extremely underrated, excellent film.
Prince of Darkness, kinda crap? Forget.
They Live I dunno, some people call it a cult classic but honestly, it has a lot of pointless boring sequences until anything happens. Probably intentional but the point is lost because of how it's presented.
In The Mouth of Madness, excellent movie. Atleast I seem to remember it was. Best Lovecraft inspired adaptation I've seen, which isn't really that hard to do with some of the shit they've made.
Escape from LA, dunno, might have gotten better over the years, but it's no NY.
Vampires, watch for James Woods pretty much. Much worse than I remembered.
Ghosts of Mars, just crap. None of the cast is strong, not even Statham in an early role. Plot is crap, effects and costuming strangely, look like some left-overs from an 80's tv show.

I see what you did there.

EDIT : I had completely forgotten about "Starman", it's shit. I forget... I forget again.

Ok, um, model effects and some of the interiors. Well I thought it was impressive.

Really ? I thought you were joking. The movie is excellent, no doubt about it, but it's more like a great "fan made movie" by cool guys (namely John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon) than anything serious. It's super cheap but a must see.

There are only three Lovecraft movies I really like and The Mouth of Madness is one of them.

If you are a Carpenter fan, Starman won't feel like a John Carpenter movie, however it did exactly what it set out to do. It just shows that in his prime, Carpenter could direct any kind of movie well, not just the horror/comedy he is known for.
