I'm convinced the Co8 guys only had the best intentions, like making sure that any ToEE modding adheres to a certain standard of quality and not every drooling idiot comes and releases a "mod" that's shit. We owe them a lot for their vigilance.

Yeah. Without their strict gatekeeping standards, someone might release something utterly retarded. Like Cloud's Sword from FF7 in ToEE.

Also, we struck a nerve: http://www.co8.org/forum/showpost.php?p=137931&postcount=11
Sigh, and of course the Codex is being a-grade a-holes about the Co8 not sharing this earlier. I would have leaked this way sooner if I hadn't assumed it was present in every version of the game ever, only useless.

Suddenly EVERYONE knew about this all along. and we've gone from it being an arcane series of steps where you experiment with the polish patch to the editor having been visible enough to assume it was present everywhere.

Making a pinky swear to keep this a secret forever would have been the only reasonable way to handle this situation and avoid all the unnecessary drama. Why didn't they pinky swear?

For what it's worth:

Q: What's this I heard about Cloud's Sword from FF7 / Sword of Life Stealing?

A: There is a hidden item called 'Sword of Life Stealing'. It's a +2 sword that drains a level on a critical hit and gives you 1d6 temporary HP. It's only available via console (type give 4154), and it was there in the vanilla game files.

The life-stealing property is bugged - it will insta-kill any monster without actual character levels (most non-human monsters are such) on a critical hit. Monsters with regeneration ability (such as Trolls) will cause further problems, too.

The Sword's model indeed looks like Cloud's sword from Final Fantasy.

Co8 has created the Guillotine Blade, which used the same model but was otherwise a regular greatsword (without the bugged Lifestealing property). It used to be available for purchase on the beginning shopmap, and was wielded by some critters in Verbobonc. It has since been removed from the game and can only be obtained via console.

I only ever played through TOEE once with a fairly late version of Co8 mod, and bugfix only variant, so admittedly I don't know how many Cloud's Sword wielding critters they had running around there. Yet it's interesting that it's basically (unused) vanilla content.

Can't sue people for breaking an NDA they never signed.

Well, Agetian writes that

a possible oversight affecting only a particular limited game release that was, in essence, an internal NDA violation within the game release team

If you knowingly spread information that resulted from breaking an NDA, that makes you liable for millions of dollars in damages. Especially with Co8 being an extremely marketable brand thanks to Keep on the Borderlands.

Bubbles' and Ventilator's posts have led me to the realization that I understand German humor better than most others do.

Perhaps it is all the German porn I watch, or all the German beer I drink.

Guys look - you have to understand that "taking the liberty of publicly distributing proprietary development software would just be reckless beyond the pale."

Oh, it was already included in copies of the game and there was nothing that needed to be distributed? Well, look, we didn't bother telling anyone because the version we got it from wasn't even widely available, it was only available "from a limited collector's edition."

Fuck, someone on the Codex has that collectors edition and can confirm what I'm saying is BS? Eh...scratch that stuff about not telling people because it only was "affecting only a particular limited game release," I mean we actually didn't tell people because we "assumed it was present in every version of the game ever."

Look guys, "ToEE itself is not a game that ever had modding 'authorized' for it, so we've always actually been on thin ice legally just releasing modpacks" which is why we openly brag about and never worried about releasing our own modding tools, "better tools than anything that was on disk." Look, we didn't want anyone to know we had it because of the "possible legal implications" of the "internal NDA violation." Which is why as soon as the Codex found out about it, we told people we were using it all along and posted instructions on how to use it.

Is that supposed to be a justification? Why do you think it wasn't used in-game? That's right, because it looked stupid and out of place. Modders, they are terrible people. They never realize that a lot of times content isn't cut because of time but because of quality concerns.

Huh? I don't justify anything there, but merely point out some facts. You can make of them what you want. For the record, I prefer my games as free of anime stuff as possible.

If history repeats itself,
the first mods that will come out of this aside from Co8 is Temple of Elemental Ponies.
Nobody can beat the dedication of those people .
