In the old days this would've been solved by defaulting all avatars to tubgirl until you manually changed it.

Didn't they remove the ability to actuallymake one ages ago? I briefly considered the notion, then noticed there wasn't actually an option to do so, only select from a list of premade ones, the list of which loads like molasses, and so I lost interest after half the images broke on load.

In the old days this would've been solved by defaulting all avatars to tubgirl until you manually changed it.

That's hardly a solution. Faced with the problem above, I'd just leave it, and you'd get to all suffer for it.
