Who did? That's some Trivia I've never heard.

It was Richard Garriot's idea, I am pretty certain. He wanted to have a diverse catalog of games. Every game at origin, he wanted to be coded totally from scratch as well so that even similar games would not become too samey. Originally it was called Squadron. Not sure when the name change came into play.

At the time it was a thing to give people credit for their work and build up designers as brands and that is the only reason Roberts is really that famous.
