Shroud of the Avatar and (by association) Underworld Ascendant have turned me completely off any backing any future kick starters for some time.

I didn't back either one, but both left enough fowl taste on about what KS really is to put a pause on KS for quite a while.

I don;t think we've seen a true classic through the KS to this point, but we have seen some solid RPGs which is more than we can say for the preceeding 7 years.

I don;t think we've seen a true classic through the KS to this point, but we have seen some solid RPGs which is more than we can say for the preceeding 7 years.

A true classic takes 3.5 years of development and pack of dice rolling nerds.

  • Troika like team is 12 (core), focus is on cRPG elements and not bling (**** unreal 4).
  • 70K a year per member = $840K per year or $2.9 million for 3.5 years of development.
  • Patience from the backers to let them spend 3.5 years to craft.
  • Team requires desire and burning passion to create a classic.
  • Special medication for the team to avoid becoming graphic whores and wasting 70%+ of the budget on eye candy.

= 0.059 % chance to happen.

Only InXile can pull in the cash to make a charge for a classic and could regress back to that style pretending the 2001-12 dark ages did not happen (the age of bling 3D graphic cards /Xbox).

The classic games happened at Interplay and Trokia because we had no "blueprint" to print money like we do now.
Free to play(grind) games = World of tanks.
Grinding /DLC gun porn = Destiny.
Pixel crack = World of warcraft.
Mobile phone games "screen tapping for the gifted" = cash cow.

These companies believed in developing value by seeking to create a classic ( **** yer PST). Publishers would plough money back then into what would be considered developmental suicide today and take a risk because they did not know what prints money.

Now that the Publishers know what prints money welcome in the masses.
They have spoken and the answer is ... In decline they trust.

Incline is fighting back but for how long.

PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Grab the Codex by the pussy Codex USB, 2014 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 BattleTech Bubbles In Memoria
Shadowrun Returns and Hong Kong

D:OS

All the inXile stuff: Wasteland, Torment and Bards Tale

I usually back for relatively sane amounts ($50 or so at most) but made an exception for D:OS and Torment, which got way more.

Why aren't the votes publicly visible? I want to see who the 2 LIARS are that supposedly pledged 5/10k.

I purposely wait for retail sometimes to help with release momentum, others I just don't care about.

D:OS - release
Wasteland2 - free from T:ToN tier
T:ToN - $145 tier + $25 for WL2 (upgraded tiers to physical later on)
Lords of Xulima - $16
Ultima Ascendant - $215
Serpents in the Staglands - $20

Failed: Deathfire - $60

Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Shadorwun: Hong Kong BattleTech
Pillars of Eternity at $250 for the signed box. WL2 and Torment for at least $100, also for the boxes. Shadowrun Returns, D:OS, and Banner Saga at $50-60 for boxes and other physical goodies. Eisenwald, Grim Dawn, Shadowrun HK, and Bard's Tale IV at the minimum digital tier. Some of these I backed through both the Codex campaign and Kickstarter separately. I admit I don't usually go for higher level pledges unless there's a physical reward. I like to get an actual thing. I'm old fashioned like that.

Usually I go for the lowest tier to get a digital copy.
So far SR:HK, BT4, Underworld and Deathfire (failed)

Only exception was D:OS, where I paid enough to get a 2nd copy to play with a friend and a digital copy of Dragon Commander (don't remember how much).

Pillars of Eternity $1000

Really ? What was your line of thoughts then ? Cant imagine sane person doing this , even if you donate millions to charity , why this ?
I put that much money in to support Obsidian and to get a type of game that I hadn't played in many years. I knew without a doubt in my mind that I wouldn't like PoE as much as the old IE games, but it felt right to pledge that much. The game has flaws, but I don't dislike it as much as some others do. If I had only pledged for the game and there was no "support Obsidian" agenda from my side, I would probably have pledged around $250. I had the spare money at the time, the people working on it were some of my favorite rpg people. The only thing I regret about my pledge is choosing a NPC over an item.

How did your investment turned out to be codextrol.jpg , no seriously at least you had a chance to make an NPC instead of some pathetic item like other backers ( backer items worst items :( seems like from other games lol , dont think people knew how the game will turn out at the time they made items cuz all of them are close to worthless except Sabre you get at the very endgame lol ), i guess big rpg names turned out to create one of most flawed rpg's in history :D , it seems Obsidian and Inxile are good at promoting air with big names ( look at MCA involvement in BT4 only for 1.9 Million dollerz )

Edit : also if you reveal which NPC was that i promise that after Expansion gets released ill reserve some special carnage for your guy instead of just auto attacking it to death like all other backers :D

My NPC's name is Nadam and his backstory has nothing to do with what I actually wrote. I killed him after reading what the "dream" had to say. I think that pissed me off so much that I stopped my session. Not only was the NPC useless, nothing I had written down in his backstory was in the game.

Really? They didn't contact you asking for clarification or changes, they just kept the name and changed everything else?! That's pretty crappy for such a large pledge.
