Do you still play Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament 1999?

Just checking in to see if it is the case.

People on RPG Codex may speak of the occasional stagnation in the current scene for singleplayer FPSes, strategy games, and RPGs. But not many would say they dislike standard deathmatch multiplayer FPSes released more recently.

Indeed, many of you are more likely to discuss recent MP FPSes, such as Left4Dead 2, than slightly older ones like even UT2003.

So perchance, does this mean Q3 or UT are out of sight and out of mind? Or do you also still play these games as well?

Oh, and just for a little refresher:

I've played a lot of Quake Live for about a year or so when it came out. I was starting to get p. good at it. Always came up in the top 3-4 fraggers of the match. Though to be honest the first couple of guys always had like 20 or so extra frags more than I did, so maybe I overestimate myself a bit. ;)

A few buddies and me occasionally gather for a LAN party every now and then and our two main games are UT99 and Quake 3. Sadly, my friends completely suck, and offer very little challenge for me. We mostly play just deathmatch, though.

I bought UT 2004 recently but have found that most of the servers are either empty or it's the demo deathmatch map being hosted by bots. Does anyone know if the UT99 scene is more lively? Because if it is then GOG might just get $6 from me.

Does Quake live count as playing Q3? If so then yes occasionally I do. Gotta love trolling people by scoring gauntlet kills. Haven't played UT in a long time though. Morpheus and phobos were the good shit. Too bad epic is too focused on making popamole now.

I play Quake 3 on LAN/Hamachi from time to time with some friends. We used to play UT too, but not anymore. Quake is more fun.

UT99 for sure. Unfortunately I never found a solution to terrible lagging problems in most servers so I don't play Multiplayer much but instead single-player mappacks from unrealsp.org through the Oldskool mod.

Also Unreal > Half-Life

Fuck interactive cutscenes and forced "escort x" gameplay, "translator messages" were a better idea to add plot fluff to a FPS without interrupting the flow of action and without forcing the player to get through them. Of course one may argue it's taste but I replayed Unreal many more times than HL. Only thing Half-Life beats Unreal at for sure is the extent of its modding community. The game itself doesn't.

Surely, the weapons in Unreal had balance issues and lacked real power, but at least compared to most HL stuff except for the alien weapons it was more original and because most of them weren't hitscan I also enjoyed them for what they were.

In before angry Half-Life fanboy(s).

Quake Live is basically Quake 3, and it's, imo, the best competitive FPS on the market right now. For relatively simple game types, like FFA, TDM or 1v1, there's nothing better out there. Plus, it's still really fun for casual play, while retaining huge competitive depth (which is something Starcraft 2 utterly fails at, for instance).

And yeah, I do play it fairly regularly, although I'm shit and can't win a 1v1 if my life depended on it nowadays. Old man reflexes cannot into railgun anymore.

I do not have Unreal Tournament 1999, and in fact I do not even know this game exists. On the other hand, Unreal Tournament will always have room reserved for it on my hard disk. Even if I prefer Unreal Tournament 3, the first one will always be there.

I still love Quake 3, but since I prefer having fun over being competitive, I kinda dropped it a long time ago. If it had had more content, I'd probably still play it now, but I'm sure I could pick it up again anytime the occasion presents itself — though it likely won't.

What do you know, I fully agree.

I don't think there are many times, at least in HL1 where scripting actually hampers the flow. Well, there is intro and getting knocked out, sometimes you have to wait for someone to come up to a door. Other than that?

Also, both HL and Unreal use environment to tell stories, and both feature "escort x" - in Unreal escorting Nali might not be mandatory, but is highly rewarding in terms of lewt.

Only thing Half-Life beats Unreal at for sure is the extent of its modding community.
Really? I'd say say Unreal/UT modding community is pretty fucking impressive (ONP, NC, DejaVu, RTNP:UE, U1 patches, Shrakitha, Xidia series, multitude of smaller, less notable campaigns - and that's just SP content) and still quite active.

There are other areas where HL beats U1, though - for example collision/hit detection mechanics.

Surely, the weapons in Unreal had balance issues and lacked real power
Mostly the latter, though I would change few things. HL weapons were certainly more specialized which made for more diverse gameplay when it came to weapon use.

I still play Unreal Tournament 2004 every now and then. It's better than UT99 in every way.

Oh, I forgot that ut2k4 is newer than ut99 meaning it's inferior by default. Sorry, my mistake.

Half Life was a superior game to Unreal. Better designed in every possible way, except for the music, which was utter shit, and of course the visuals, which were no where near as spectacular. Unreal was actually quite hackneyed. The action was poor, level design was mostly crap (from a gameplay perspective), and most of the challenges offered besides combat were pretty boring.

That said, UT99 and Quake Live are the only online shooters that i still play on occasion. Everything just feels so popamole after trying those two.
