Everyone seems to be in a massive uproar over this game's abortive release. What planned features did DF abandon? The massive backlash points to a lot I'm guessing...

They changed their planned features page to this:
http://spacebasedf9.com/devplans

Previously it was this:
http://web.archive.org/web/20131018054131/http://spacebasedf9.com/devplans

It is doubly ironic when you consider Double Fine said this:
tJoynBa.png

After going silent for several months then pulling the plug, they deleted that post. It's still quoted in the thread like here:

Wow...that's a lot of botched features. Such a shame, this would have been incredible.
The most maddening part, is how they are treating the situation with so much apathy.

The penultimate Spacebase review from J_C, for the request of Ulminati :
I played the game for 2 hours today, and that time was enough for me to realise that the game is weak and shallow. Every game basicly boils down to this:
- send a few guys mining forever
- build a few oxygen recycler
- build a lot of beds, so you can accept the new citizens who wants to join you
- start building every kind of items and room the game offers (research, infirmary, airlocks, gardens etc). The order doesn't matter, just build them sooner or later.
- when you get bored, exit the game (since there are no missions, only some achievements)

There is no challange in this AT ALL. My citizens didn't die even though I forgot to build food dispensers for a long time. I assume they would die after a while, but it takes a looot of time. The mood, hobbies, friends and thoughts of the citizens don't make a huge effect on the game. The only challange is when a random attack happens, but just switch everybody to security job when this happens, and you can repell the attack. If you built laser defense, it is even easier.

The game needed a lot of work to be a full version. It is not the lack of content which is bad, because there are a lot of different types of equipement, rooms and jobs you can juggle. But the game mechanics itself is underdeveloped, so you can get bored pretty fast.

The next logical step in this process would be for Double Fine to be acquired by EA or Activision, produce a few more skippable shovelware titles, and then be taken out to the back forty and quietly euthanized.

"Old developers never die; they're just euthanized by EA."

This is just sad. A half-assed, overpromised and shit game gets produced and nobody points the fingers. Nobody goes "We always knew he won't deliver" or some shit.

Well... that's Molyneux for you... wait... oh... right.:troll:

Not gonna happen, not even Robert "Evil Incarnate" Kotick doesn't want to touch Tim Schafer with a 10-foot pole.

To be fair, what J_C described just sounds like a simplified Fortress Mode of Dwarf Fortress. That one also gets really boring at some point, and the biggest challenge is wrestling with the controls and the autistic insanity of Toady every update.

That's why the community at some point just started talking about larping bullshit or "megaprojects" for the sake of it.

Of course, what Double Fine did is still bullshit. I'm just saying, making a GAME out of a sandbox thingy like this is actually pretty hard, since not even the guy who did Dwarf Fortress managed it completely (instead simulating sweat or leaves falling from trees).

I really don't get why this wasn't finished. It is actually good material for game and there are lot of people who would buy it. Also it would have looong. legs. Add to it modding API in 1.0 version fix bugs and don't support game any more and still modders would "fly" this game for years in steam.

Because the entire project was a scam to get more funding for Broken Age.

It wasn't finished because they released updates at a snail's pace. Because they released updates at a snail's pace, sales dried up. Because sales dried up, they claimed they couldn't afford to release more updates.

Just Double Fine being Double Fine.

Double Fine shot themselves on the foot by opting to go for complex, niche strategy games. Both DF-9 and Massive Chalice were too ambitious on paper for a company with such insane costs and abysmal management. The funny thing is that they treated their backers the same way they treated their publishers in the past. They mismanaged their development schedule, didn't deliver what they promised on time, asked for more money, and when they didn't get it they simply dropped it. They should have continued making those hipster casual thingies.

Massive Chalice was successful, though, wasn't it? I remember I got called all kinds of things and banned from their Steam forums when I said the game was going to go the same way as DF-9.

Because it is not going to the same way. They were right to ban you. :smug:

Massive Chalice isn't released.

Can we call it successful?

Last I heard it was in beta and still very lacking in content. They claimed it was close to release.

I'm looking forward to J_C's 2017 review of Massive Chalice where he concludes it is lacking content and polish.

The word 'game' should be replaced with the word 'scam' in the thread title.
