Not surprised that KIS/KAG are loved more than KKoW on here, but the latter is the one I "grew up with," so to speak, and so it's the one I'm most fond of. KIS/KAG are, in many respects, much less forgiving than KKoW. There was also a switch from pretty well done 2d graphics (KIS/KAG) to 3d on par with Warcraft 3 (KKoW).

Bit surprised to see Warzone 2100 be considered "forgotten." Last I knew, there was still a pretty active community around the game.

I always liked Beasts and Bumpkins, a nice mix of Settlers and classic RTS with good production values from 1997. Lots of stuff that makes it quite original in this genre.

Also remember an rts where you where one of two factions that got send back into prehistoric times. Lots of rpg aspects in that you had to manage each of your units. Lots of people here liked it back in the day but I never played it.

This sounds very familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. What I can remember is a pretty amusing Red Alert 2 campaign mission where the Allies get transported too far back in time, ending up in the age of dinosaurs.

The game is Original War and it's awesome.

Yup, it sounds like OW. The game is very clunky and flawed in general, but I enjoyed it for the story and for the b-movie feel.

Not sure if I'd call it forgotten, though:

Tribal Rage (1998, TalonSoft)

Oh, I played this one SO MANY TIMES. Many different tribes, unit customization, limited ammo, map editor... Lots of bugs, too. It was full of late 90s gloriousness.
Check out this baddass intro:

Starbound II, an old Mac space strategy game, was fun from what I recall. You can get it here and it should run with SheepShaver.

A few screenshots:

If I remember right, conquering a planet took three steps. First there was an MoO2 type space battle, then (I think) your ships facing off against any planetary guns during a bombardment phase, and finally an RTS invasion phase where your troops face off against theirs.

Fields of Fire - RPG/strategy during the colonial era, I remember it was really nice, but the engine was abysmal. Very nice graphics as well

Not only best looking.
Yea, whenever I hear about forgotten, neglected titles, the game that pop up in my mind first is Battle Realms. Well, hype always wins over actual value.

Yeah, Beasts and Bumpkins. I have to add to that a little, for those who don't know it. Beasts and Bumpkins is unique in so many ways.
In Beasts and Bumpkins there is a builder a la Settlers, but in BnB there are actual seasons (the whole graphics set changes for each season). Between the seasons, there is night. Now, in BnB people are born, become children, grow, get old and die. In order to get new people, a man and a woman meet out on the street, the man is like "you know what I'd like right now" (there is actual speech output) they go into a hut for a night, and hey presto, the next morning there is a little baby in a crib, which then becomes a child, and then a grown man (only then can it become either one of the specialists running the economy or a soldier). If there are not enough women around the men begin complaining ("I need a woman's company") and the morale sinks. If people grow old the become grandpas (especially annoying if it happens in the middle of combat), who fight the enemies with their walking stick. It is recommended to use the grandpas as cannon fodder, because if they die in your village, a disease might start - or you need a priest who can bury the dead.
Then the people are not always law abiding, they swear, steal and murder. You can build a prison and actually determine what the punishment for the offenses will be.
This game is so much fun.:D

Also, it has a great soundtrack that I still put into my CD-Player from time to time.

This reminds me of the thing I always done in BnB - Walk of the Old(tm). Everytime somebody got old, I made them walk out of the village so he dies sooner (makes room), doesn't use resources (no food for you) and explore map. I think I'm really a cruel man inside.

Trade Empires, a real time game similar to Railroad Tycoon and Transport Tycoon where the goal is to trade profitably. Watch supply and demand fluctuate in real time as goods come in and out and try to make as much money as possible. The twist is that the game takes place across the ages and so there's much more focus put on growth. Cities rise and fall as trade patterns change, new technologies evolve and as you try to squeeze as much money as possible from trade routes. A really special game if you like economics or history. The one weakness is a weak AI but it doesn't change the core gameplay.

Centurion: Defender of Rome and Conquest of the New World. Both are TBS, and in both one turn was one year. Centurion also had these sea battle, chariot racing and gladiator fighting mini-games. I loved the grid-based combat in Conquest of the New World and the fact that there were many resource types.
