I dont know what nostalgia-induced drugs they swallow but the old Codex is not that rosy. I still remember a few spit-flying posts from Rosh or something. I did lurk here for a year before register, and lurk without post for a year before my 1st post~

The old day we had AAA devs hanging around. The new days we have indie devs hanging around.

Nowaday our poll of top 50 and some such has real substance and widely known.

Overall I think we ascend from there.

I've been a member since 2006, and a lurker since 2004 or thereabouts. I think the Codex has never been better than it is now. There are many more diverse opinions - I guess the only thing we can all agree on is how bad Oblivion is.

The Codex has always churned out high quality content, so that hasn't changed much, but I think the relationship with developers has only improved. Brian Fargo and Chris Avellone seem to like the Codex and take it seriously. We have amazing developers like Kevin Saunders and Colin McComb actually post here. I think the Codex is currently going through a renaissance.

Yes, there is still the awful shit in GD but there's a lot of quality discussions to be found in the gaming forums. I quite like how Codexers pay attention to a wider range of games than just the hardcore CRPGs and there's no real 'hivemind' take on popular titles any more.

As for me, I lurked here for a bit in late 2008/early 2009 before joining up. Why? Because this was one of the few forums that told things as it is, there was no pussyfooting, there were very few taboo subjects and being a user with experience in gaming seemed to count for something instead of gaming history suddenly starting in 2002 by Microsoft stating "Let there be X-Box!" and then all was Good. (Yeech!)

Sure, the Codex had (and still has) its share of users that help keep up the Codex's seedy reputation, but compared to past times that shit is quickly fading away. We're all getting older and weary, and some of us are even getting wiser as well.

The current influx of users has two sources: The new life that has been breathed into RPGs by crowdfunding and indie titles, and Gamergate detritus washing upon the shores of Codex and wondering why they can speak their mind freely. New users are always a mixed bunch, some are good and some are bad. Deal with it.

Newfags (including everyone who came here since the start of GamerGate) don't have any fisting privileges, though. In the fisting market, oldfags control the supply. If "witty" oneliners, memes, and "unpopular" opinions are massively fisted/rewarded, then oldfags should reconsider doing so.

The only redeeming quality of the site is GD/politics and prosperland, which are about to get flooded with the first wave gamergaters who registered here when the whole thing started (August 2014).

I actually think all in all this is kind of a healthy if not necessary thing.
It means that there is an influx of people who try to become part of the Codexes very own identity.
Of course some of them try too hard etc. pp., but at least it means that there is something they can try to achieve.
If the influx of a fascinated youth stops it's the death of every subculture. Which the Codex kind of is.

You get to see IP + location of posters. You can ignore while never being ignored (which is fairly irresponsible considering illegal content but well). You can delete and modify post because because it is the only amount of power and control you will ever have in your pathetic life. You can merge threads, move them from one forum to another section if you have an agenda. You can post in the good administration private forum and feel important.
