Has there ever been a more criminally underrated director than John Carpenter?

The majority of posts and votes in this thread have only served to reinforce my argument that John Carpenter is the most underrated of mother fuckers. He's responsible for not only one of the greatest films ever made (The Thing), he also invented the entire Slasher sub-genre with Halloween, which it's self is one of the all time great horror films.

He's directed numerous *fantastic* cult classics, and yet he's still referred to as a B-grade director by countless dip shits, some even claiming to be fans. John Carpenter ain't no B-grade director bitch. He's one of the best, period.

There are a lot of underrated directors actually.

The problem with Carpenter - if there is one - is that most of his works is in a genre that is considered the domain of B-movies. He undoubtedly has made many magnificient movies like Christine or The Thing but that was the domain of video rental stores, where you went with some friends to borrow yet another sick movie. Over the years as we became experts and conoisseurs of films we understand that some of them were truly good, and are surprised that so many people don't know.

While it was certainly influential, there were slasher movies before Halloween.

Sure, if you define it very broadly, like Ten Little Nigger Boys and Psycho or a bunch of exploitation movies, but I wouldn't. Halloween defined the genre like nothing else. It became the gold standard of slashers.

    This has potential.
After David Lynch, John Carpenter finding a creative outlet in TV? It could end up very well.

I would reserve "criminally underrated" director for Roman Polanski, since Streep and fellow pedophile Woody Allen say he's done his penance. We can't all escape from New York, after raping children, and with his proximity to the Vatican and Dutroux, he probably doesn't miss the US at all.

John Carpenter is a legend. As the director and composer behind dozens of classic movies, Carpenter has established a reputation as one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of modern cinema, as well as one of its most influential musicians. The minimal, synthesizer-driven themes to films like Halloween, Escape From New York, and Assault on Precinct 13 are as indelible as their images, and their timelessness was evident as Carpenter performed them live in a string of internationally sold-out concert dates in 2016. Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 collects 13 classic themes from Carpenter’s illustrious career together on one volume for the first time. Each theme has been newly recorded with the same collaborators that Carpenter worked with on his hit Lost Themes studio albums: his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies.

    TRACK LISTING:

    1. In the Mouth of Madness
    2. Assault on Precinct 13
    3. The Fog
    4. Prince of Darkness
    5. Santiago (Vampires)
    6. Escape from New York
    7. Halloween
    8. Porkchop Express (Big Trouble in Little China)
    9. They Live
    10. The Thing
    11. Starman
    12. Dark Star
    13. Christine

The vinyl versions will be having a good price in upcoming years.

Bonus: nicely done cover of Halloween main theme.

Unless you are a completionist, I wouldn't bother. It's well done, but a formulaic ghost story, with a screenplay that should have been reworked to bring something new to the table. I just remember some glimpses, and frankly I liked more Ghosts of Mars, because it was more unintentionally funny.

I consider The Thing to be one of the best movies ever made. I've watched that film, I don't know how many times, but if i said over 50 i don't feel like it would be an exaggeration. It is that good.

They Live is criminally underrated, and Big trouble in little China is of course excellent.

But the rest of his career? Criminally underrated?

Carpenter turned hack about the time he made escape from LA. Which was a seriously bad fan service flick. Everything after that stinks. Trust me, no one is criminally underrating Ghosts of Mars

People do ignore how much crap he eventually made. Although even his mediocre films have a certain charm to them. Still, if you make you make lots of b-movies, you're gonna end up being remembered as a b-movie director. And there's nothing wrong with that.

As for Halloween, I would argue Fulci&Argento were more influential.
