I've tried running this from Steam through Wine (a huge PITA, mind you, as I don't have the proper fonts and for some reason, they won't properly install), but it hangs at the window that pops up to do the first-time setup. I really wanted to play this game in my downtime during the week, so any help is appreciated. Crispy

I think I figured it out. Will do some more testing tomorrow night to see if I can get it to perform good with my current "fix"

I use the gog version and didn't need to install any fonts in the prefix. I also use vcmi on occasion.

I installed Steam using PlayOnLinux and was able to play multiple games with that setup. I guess their install script takes care of the usual font pitfalls.
Of course, I don't know if Heroes III would be one of the winners, but I'd say it's likely.

What linux distro did you use, then?
I usually recommend to stick to Ubuntu, because shit just tends to work there in contrast to every other fancy distro I ever tried...

If you did use Ubuntu and still have weird font problems, then I suspect some other problem maybe not even related to WINE.

Anyway, according to this it should work fine:

PlayonLinux worked on Linux Mint(based on Ubuntu and Debian). Just installing on Wine was what was not working. My bad for poor wording.

The HD edition on Steam is garbage and should be avoided at all costs. It's missing the expansions and the "remastered" graphics involves them painting over what was originally 3D renders in photoshop. Just use the HD patch for the GOG version.
