I'd just recommend playing by release date. First game's aged terrifically, and it can be hard to get in to the other games in the series if you get too used to MGS3's style of gameplay.

I went back and played every game in the series starting with MGS4 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MG1 -> MG2: Solid Snake -> MGS1. MGS1 was the last game in the series that I played.

So I'm certain that I can say that MGS1 has by far, out of the whole bunch, aged most aggressively. The gameplay is the most arcane. It doesn't have crouch running or first person aiming. The camera is strictly isometric, so you are heavily reliant on the "vision cone" radar to detect guard patterns. Enemies by and large have to be either dispatched by carefully sneaking up and putting them in a chokehold, which can be unnerving because the difference between triggering an alarm and successfully putting the guard in a choke hold is much more narrow than in MGS3.

MG2: SS > all. Best story and level design. MGS2 comes close due to increased gameplay options without the awful corridor level design of MGS 3 and 4, but fuck that dialogue. MGS1 is just a dumbed down MG2.

You don't have to be that careful. Enemies are not very sound aware, just run past them.

I think you probably had a harder time of it because you played the later more advanced ones beforehand and expected enemies to react to things they are not aware of in MGS1.

MG2 was a lot more playable than MGS1 and aged a lot more gracefully.

There was an interesting part where you have to gain access to a guard camp that is always locked during the day. At one point in the game you find an egg. When it hatches, it becomes an owl. If you take the owl to the guard camp, it's cooing makes them believe it's night time and they change shifts. During their shift change they deactivate the fence tripwire and you can sneak past.

I can't play MGS1 and MGS2 anymore after playing MGS4.

MGS3 (HD Edition, not the original version) is still playable.

MGS3 HD edition is the same as the Subsistence version. The original had a fixed isometric camera similar to MGS1 and 2.

Subsistence has a full 3D camera and is the one I would recommend, or MGS HD Collection if you can get that. Both are hard to find at this point.

Areas are just stacked next to each other like a corridor. I prefer the feeling as if I'm in a single cohesive location; Thief level design.

Meh, I still find MGS1 and 2 perfectly playable, and I was introduced to the series through MGS3. Think the only major problem gameplay-wise with MGS2 was its over-reliance on gimmicks (i.e. having to 'unlock' the radar map by finding nodes in each level, Emma escort sections, etc) and the blandness of the plant.

Snake Tales is where it's at for me. Ground Zeroes' side ops were good, but not great. MGS5 needs to have side ops of higher quality for it to be the best.

They're all good. If you took Metal Gear so seriously that you thought MGS2 got too pretentious you're a loser. It's everything I wanted from a Japanese Westaboo who wanted to go post-modern on a whim; it's so loveable.

But in all seriousness, MGS3 is a fucking excellent game. Just make sure you get the Subsistence or one of the re-releases with a full 3D camera.

Maybe he'll join the fuck responsible for heavy rain and beyond something and they'll make the ultimate no gameplay experience "game".

All the retcon shit really turns MGS series from a bizarre melodramatic espionage soap opera into an animu cum gargling competition.

I never got why in the end of MGS2 when they get a list of the Patriots (it's like a dozen or more names), they're all dead for over 60-100(?) years and then in the shit-ass PSP game the Patriots are founded in the fucking 60's/70's.

Hideo aged a lot in just one year. Poor guy. All his relationships just seem to fall through the floor. Guy can't keep his family and then he can't keep his job. Punished Hideo indeed. Looking forward to seeing what he does without Konami forcing him to make more Metal Gear Solid games.

Similarly, Konami has also never said anything explicit that would indicate they are keeping Kojima’s family hostage. When a spokesperson was asked about Metal Gear Solid 5, they responded, “It will be more than likely that MGS5 is the last Kojima-produced Metal Gear title. I think we’ve kept him away from his family long enough.

Nice use of Kojima's quotes there.

The Patriots were the continuation of the American branch of the Philosophers but uniquely shaped by the Cold War. Even in Metal Gear Solid 3 there is a scene where Zero says "who are the patriots and la-le-lu-le-lo." It wasn't really a retcon and out of all the bad changes in the series its actually one of the better and more historically interesting.

I think MGS needs to be taken once at the time and treated as such.

On their own both MGS1 and MGS3 are fucking great games but when you try to get into lore and connect dots is where MGS starts to take its toll and you more and more dissatisfied with retcons and other shit.

You can play both MGS1 and MGS3 as stand alone games and have pretty awesome time where MGS2,4, 5 and 5-2 requires you to sink into that lore.

MGS2,4, 5 and 5-2 requires you to sink them into the toilet. *Mah mandatory response to anything MGS

Anyway, Let's hope he'll make that survival horror game after all. That Demo had nothing really to do with Silent Hill, so it's better if both Kojima and SH don't drag down each other. I just hope Del Toro has nothing to do with it.
