On the internet, writing shit posts.
I don't mind random loot per se, but I do mind it when there are like 100 variations of the same item. Then it just becomes accounting.
I never really got into Borderlands because of that.

Cartoony graphics for no good reason.
WoW style quests, towns and npcs.
Pay to win and or heavy grinding mechanics.
Dumbed down and streamlined games, especially when its aimed for consoles.

I find the zombie genre to be so incredibly boring that I don't bother with these games. Still haven't found the motivation to try out Dead State, because meh zombies.

Generic settings.

There is a lot of other stuff I just abhor, but I can't think of any that would single-handedly break the game for me.
Not QTEs (I beat TW2 while cursing the fuck who came up with this shit to high heavans but I still beat it), not sticky cover (I beat DX:HR, although mostly abstaining from using the sticky cover key), not HP bloat, not loot inflation, not level scaling, not fake difficulty/learn by dying. The thing that comes closest is probably completely arbitrary and nonsensical mechanics, but I managed to even play games containing this, so still not 100% deal breaker.

OTOH a game being utterly generic means I have no fucking reason to play it - if it's just another X, well, I've played X already, get fucking lost.

Ok, I also don't play games that require working network connection or repeated investment of any sort, but that's usually not something that's part of the game proper, but stuff bolted onto it for whatever asinine reason.

1) Military milieus. CoD, MoH, Battlefield.... these always boil down to some binary HURRAY propaganda festivals. Have yet to see a game that depicts war and army life more seriously and maturely. Not that anyone would want it anyway.

2) Zombies are a close second. It's basically racism packaged into thoughtless violence. It's underlying message reeks of "Killing is alright. You can be a psychopath and it's all legal".

3) Bioware. FUCK THAT SHIT.

QTEs. Fuck you, Witcher 2, I know it's ACTION RPG, but you went too far.

Lack of challenge. Basically when no matter how much you fuck up you still faceroll 90% of content, when you have to heavily handicap yourself and/or use mods to have any challenge at all (hi, New Vegas). Same goes for quest markers for everything (find the missing plot device! Well, here it is, my map has already found it), or really whenever the game assumes the player is a retard.

Level-scaling. Combines the best of "our audience is retards" and "we can't create challenging content for shit".

WoW-like cartoonish graphics and that kind of aesthetics in general (giant, retarded looking pauldrons and helmets, everything with 10 different fire/ice/magic particle effects that obscure the view). It's just a way to hide that your graphics suck, nobody goes with this shit because they think it will look good.

Pseudo-retro graphics (it's just like 8-bit platformers!). Ok, maybe I don't automatically hate those, but if that's how you advertise your game you'll have a hard time convincing me to buy it. 2D platformers can be made with modern technology, you lazy fucks.

"We want to reach a broader audience, so we changed/simplified that thing the audience we already have liked". Strawman, I know, but can anyone name a game when they said something like that and the game didn't suck?

Zombies? Nothing against zombies (as in, this game contains zombies), but if your game is a "zombie game", I'll pass.

QTE
Level-scaling
Escort Missions (these I particularly hate)
Romances
Time limited segments
Randomly generated levels and loot (I never seem to get tired of hand crafted levels even after multiple play throughs, but one RNG level and I'm sick of them)
Always online for single player games (I flat out will not buy games that are like this)
Buggy games (it's why I've slowly grown less fond of anything Bethesda)

I don't have anything special against carry weight but it's oddly implemented sometimes. Like in BG, 49 lbs. is ok but 50 lbs.? You can't move AT ALL

Also, vehicles, when it's obvious that it was introduced as a gimmick. Think about HL2 or the Mako in ME. in both cases, the thing is a fucking pain in the butt to control, adds nothing of value to your experience, and feels like it was introduced in a desperate attempt to make something "creative".

- Generic or poorly designed gameplay mechanics. Especially lack of enemy diversity.

- Abusive pay-2-win (this does include cheap arcade games)

I'm tolerant to everything else.

(lol to some answers in this thread. X art style, zombies, etc )

I'm reading this thread and imagining :rpgcodex: going :x and flipping tables at apparently every game ever.

The thread is about deal-breakers, not enragingly retarded features that nevertheless can be endured if the rest of the game is good enough.

While they haven't ruined any games for me yet, elaborate 19th century sewer systems in pseudo 14th century European fantasy settings do make me want to punch the screen. Those vast, underground sewer networks that are not only boring as fuck to explore, but also far larger than the actual settlements they serve, and almost as anachronistic as replacing knight's horses with armored personnel carriers. Why does a town with a population of thirty people need a sewer system designed for a industrial revolution era metropolis? And is there any fantasy CRPG out there that would be poorer for having it's mandatory sewer level removed?

Actually, back in the day I was so fed up with Diablo II's catacombs and sewers that when Divine Divinity asked me to descend into an underground level within 10 minutes of starting the game I simply uninstalled it.

I actually liked the sewers in RoA 3, mostly because it was an actual sewer system. Virtually no enemies to fight (except for an optional encounter with the city guard that can only be triggered at a very specific point during the game, and one mandatory fight with pirates if I remember correctly), no real puzzles, but all kinds of atmospheric nooks and crannies like that secret passage that leads straight to the sarcophagus at the graveyard, explaining how you-know-who escaped from there. And the sewers also provided a convenient method of fast-travel within the city walls.

Edit: They're also fairly small and easy to navigate, unlike most sewer levels.

Admittedly some games do make some effort justifying these sort of sewer systems - typically "blah blah more developed/elven city was here before".
