Well, been playing Iwd 2 for the first time. Interesting game, not as good as the original in terms of atmosphere but it is relatively better designed. The drop rate for magical items is more sensible, money is a bit more of an issue (at least respect to the original) and for some reason stats, class and race affect dialog options (even though this is meant to be an action game).

Things that are retarded so far include the fact the best tank is a monk/rogue/wizard deep gnome wearing neither armor nor shield, and that anything short of that will make your life miserable, at least in HoF mode, but even on normal if you are playing at insane. Its just weird. There's just no other way to bump your AC to comfortable levels and any character below 60 AC might as well have no AC whatsoever, that's how easily they'll be getting hit (and in HoF mode they'll be getting hit HARD). Also, due to damage resistance, don't bother dual wielding any of your characters. This game seems to be more about min and maxing then the original, at least at first impression. You need to powergame the hell out of it or else get ready to constant reloading. Larping is not even an option here.

Don't play HoF, it's not like in the first game.

Perhaps you should try to play the game without idiotic "guides" that show you how to play unnatural builds like "monk/rogue/wizard deep gnome" to achieve the "ultimate AC".
Insane or not, if you're not playing HoF you don't need this crap. If you want to play HoF you could install IWD tactics. It makes key encounters more challenging (and more exciting) but it also adds a chunk of generic AC to all your characters in HoF so that you can play in a normal manner instead of relying on such crappy builds.

I've never played IWD II much, but in IWD 1 HoF level 1 start you could always negate they "they always hit me" thing by spamming Entangle, Hold Person and Web.
In fact in IWD 1 you won most fights that way; you'd only hit enemies on natural 20's otherwise.

Can't you just out-of-screen AoE-kill everything like in BG? That was my solution to any annoying fight.

I used summons while party uses bow most of the time in IWD. That said, I could finish IWD 1 but couldn't get into IWD II before my system got too modern and the game got very very glitchy graphics.

Doesn't work as well in IWDII. Monsters have crazy saves. Best way to survive in HoF mode is to have a decoy with super high AC and defenses distract the enemies while your spell casters try to soften them up with some crowd control and whatever damaging spell still works in HoF (a lot of them suck), then you send your melee killers, melee damage being the one thing that scales really well.

Right now my decoy is a deep gnome with one monk level (for the WIS bonus to AC), one rogue level (for Crow's Nest, +3 generic AC, rogue only), one Dreadmaster of Bane level (for Every God Ring and +2 to WIS through quest) and the rest as an illusionist. Its just weird that this little guy, wearing no armor and no shield can just waltz around a bunch of enemies where my full plate wearing warriors die in two or three hits as soon as i send them in.

I snobbed this game when it came out but compared to the shit that's out today its actually not that bad. Like all infinity engine games, its best played with little resting as possible.

Bow damage scales badly in HoF mode due to damage resistance (same reason why dual wielding sucks). You have to use the best arrows all the time for ranged weapons to be effective and those run out pretty fast.

On the plus side, enemy AC doesn't scale up in HoF mode which means you can abuse feats like Expertise, Power Attack and Rapid Shot with impunity. You'll rarely ever miss with high BAB characters.

Race and class affected dialogue options in Icewind Dale 1 as well. It was really funny to explain to that drunk in Easthaven how alcohol circulates in his bloodstream if you were a mage.

Heart of Fury mode isn't intended for 1st level characters. It is meant to be played with a party that has beaten the game once, much like Nightmare and Hell difficulty levels in Diablo 2. Personally, I think that playing D&D games on any other difficulty level than "core rules" is kind of weird and out-of-place anyway.

Those games are too easy at core rules. If there was an iron man option i could see it as viable, but as it is i enjoy the added difficulty.

What glitchy graphics? IWD2 actually has less graphical problems than IWD1 and BG2 since they gave up on the worthless gimmicky hardware-accelerated "2D 3D" effects.

I'm not a fan of Guild Wars, but I've just seen their concept art and they are gorgeous! They are a little more over the top that standard Icewind Dale ones, but still very fitting:

Some are a bit to much AWESHUM for my taste, like the "cliched badass eye-patch guy", and the evil things with thorns, blades and a fucking bazzoka, that looks like Warhammer's a kid definition of "evil"....but definetly they have their hearts in the right place. :)
