Actually, this is sort of what happens in the first game, minus the "redeem" part. :smug:

You're fucking delusional if you think for a moment that Bethesda will allow agame to be released with its name on the cover that will possibly even remotely frustrate a casual (read: 40-something year old wife mother of three playing games while cooking dinner) player.

Pretty much. Plus the second game's greatest ally is someone who helped trick Garret in the first game. Having strange bedfellows is a recurring theme throughout the series. I wouldn't be surprized to see Garret in cahoots with the hag in Thi4f :M

So far the guys at Arkane have been saying all the right stuff. They better fucking deliver.

I dunno. Arkane usually delivers, but their stuff has its flaws.

I liked both Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah; however, none of these "quotes" sound uber-revolutionary. Just solid, solid gameplay.

I am worried about the combo system. While it sounds great in theory, someone is almost invariably going to find a way to break the system which players will be repeating for years.

In worst case scenario, this could end up being a second-rate Deus Ex, though I doubt Arkane will fail to deliver compelling gameplay on some level. My worst fears are, as usual, bug-ridden software full of exploits and logical holes, that or a hackneyed plot, since they are not particularly renown for ingenious narrative.

Oh yeah, I am still excited for Thief, though it is an easier game to screw up than Deus Ex. The third person shots have me worried, in the same way Boss battles in DX:HR had me worried.

I am still waiting to see the Assassin's Creed-esque arial maneuvers, complete with stunning acrobatics from the new, improved Garrett! I hope he jumps into hay, also.

Yeah the first GR was a good game. Funny though that reviewers back in 2001 were critical of the fact that even a tiny obstruction was isurmountable as you couldn't climb or jump. How they roared at this 'retardation'! Now reviewers would praise it!

They learned from their mistake with Cthulhu and now release this type of thing:

What the fuck IS that thing on the cover of DCotE, anyway? Is that supposed to be an Innsmouth Hybrid? It looks sort of hairy.

Have you noticed the modern trend that all games MUST feature a "badass-looking dude" on their box cover?
Heck, even Planescape Torment is (infamously) guilty of this. Skyrim, on the other hand, is not. o_O

For a given value of "modern". Games from the late 80's-early 90's Golden Age did not do that.

    [IMG][IMG]

And if they did show a person, it was less "BADASS" and more old-fashioned fantasy kitsch.

That was back then though. But maybe they are coming back to supporting hardcore games, who knows.

The reason I don't fear it will be dumbed down is because it seems to be a game Bethesda likes and wants to be able to make. I mean, say what you will about TES games, but the intention there has always been to give players freedom, multiple options in any situation, emergent gameplay etc. They might fail at it time and time again, but maybe they'll support a developer that has shown that it's capable of pulling it off.

Understood, but I'd rather have a game that pushed the genre than a reiteration or reimagining of Deus Ex.

Agree in theory. Unfortunately in reality we are faced with constant regression of the genre. Non of the modern games can even come close, let alone surpass, Deus Ex. If this game will be even in the vicinity of "solid gamepley" it will be a fucking miracle and I will have to travel to Częstochowa on my knees.
