I played the demo for a while... the game's really surprisingly good in terms of visuals, along with the audio it all comprises a solid atmosphere. I was surprised at how smoothly the game ran, too.

Combat's lackluster, at best. The problem here is: if you're going for RT, you have to make sure your animations work in order to make it at least a little bit interesting, for starters. Here, the character feels very floaty. It's still doable, I mean turn-based combat (god, it would feel so awesome in this setting) is probably not possible anymore at this moment, since the levels are laid out etc., but there's hope for this model, too.

Then there's writing; too uninspired, too saturated with exposition. All characters seem to have the same voice. It's a pity, since the audio-visual side provided me with very good ambiance... and then I read the first dialogue. It might be the translation, but I think the devs would do themselves a huge favor if they hired writing help.

All in all, InSomnia's off to a very solid start, I'm seriously considering backing them up, as long as they lay out a more convincing plan.

UK£ 12 500 = 1 182 955.8 Russian rubles. If we're to believe their studio page, they are based in Samara. It's a big city, but definitely not Moscow or St. Petersburg. Going by hh.ru (a popular job listing site), in Samara average experienced programmer's salary is ~100 000 RUB (1 536.3$). It can be less, it can be more, depending on a company, of course. OK, so they seem to have three programmers listed on their kickstarter page, and four 3d-artists. Also one sound designer. Studio Mono is independent, or so they claim, but they seem to have a sponsor. I wonder if they hired all listed on kickstarter page as full-time employees, as opposed to contracted specialists. Kinda weird for an unknown indie company. Also going by provincial levels' salaries, they either pay their employees/contractors kinda too generously, and/or they don't have an accountant. Or maybe there is some money laundering involved.

I don't know about their programmers, but they better indeed pay their artists generously because their artists are apparently the only talented ones in russian game industry.

okay, i tried the demo.

here is some impression:
the gameplay is action RPG, you control one character with WASD like usual. mouse button to attack, typical RPG inventory, looting and crafting system. it surprisingly works pretty well.

if you equip melee item, click LMB will attack, and ctrl to block. so far you can spam block with no timing effectiveness, but its really responsive

if you equip a gun, RMB will make a reticle and crosshair appear and RMB will shot. this works kinda like TPS, but with isometric view.

dialogue is pretty much your standard RPG dialogue with the dialogue box and responses. typically, there are 3-6 (can be more) responses you can choose. so far it is just question, but like fallout the character can have personality trough the dialogues.

stats: like fallout, there are several governing attributes:
STR
PER
END
CHA
DEX
INT

it seems these are levelled by skill points

there are also some skills:
-light weapons = small guns, pistol, etc
-one handed = small melee weapons
-two handed = two handed melee weapons
-rifle = rifles
-big guns = probably grenade launchers, minigungs, etc
-explosives
-survival
-armor
-medicines
-electronics
-rhetorics (kinda like speech or persuation)

i think these are leveled up by bethesda system where you use, you get exp in that part.

each skills is also a skill tree on its own, it's unlcear how you get the points to fill the skill tree, but it looks like this:

one handed consist of several branch:
-more damage
-heavy hits
-more critical change
-more effective blocking

and so on.

there is also traits, that exactly works like perks from fallout game.

Pros:
-great art direction and graphics in general. it felt like bioshock meets fallout. Unreal engine 4 is really good
-decent mechanics so far. it seems they kinda use elder scrolls levelling system where you use stuff and it will level up. shooting is really skill based i think, my aim early on is really a mess and the reticle is wide. guess its gonna improve when you have level up
-decent writing. nothing stands out too much, but it's tolerable at least. great interaction too. early, there's this annoying robot that constantly mocks you. you can hack him and turn him less offensive and obedient. it isn't gated by anything though. i hope they change for skill requirement.

cons:

-crashes after i leave the first map
-few bugs there and there

so far i think this has great potential, and great core mechanics. they just have to expand more, and give it interesting content and lore.

right now i feel nothing to write off (since there is just spar with your buddy with a sword, and a shooting range shooting at target)

the melee is pretty standard stuff. you click and you attack, and ALT for block.

enemies blocks your attack quite alot, you have to circle left, right to find an opening while occasionally blocking and countering. there seems to be a parry and counter system, but maybe i am mistaken. i wil ltry again later and find what melee combat really composed of.

ranged combat is really stat based i think. early, your aim can be really off (it's reticle based, the nearer the target is, the smaller the crosshair become, and more accurate. it is safely assume skills in the weapon will make it more accurate (think fallout 3 shooting) oh yea, like i explained, you just aim the crosshair around and it will move your character too (think hotline miami, but isometric view and 3D instead of top down view and 2D)

might be interesting when you mix and match the playstile along with multiple types of enemies

the combat has a great potential if they continue to improve and polish it. alot of you guys probably want turn based out of something like this (me too to some extend)but i feel it's really great.

downside is movement animation is still quite floaty, but a little polish it will be perfect i guess.

Fighting Arena update, the Fallen of Object 6, official wiki, and other news

Hello everyone! It's been a while since our last update and we have so much to share with you now. Today we will cover a really vast number of topics, so without further adieu... let's roll!

Fighting Arena
5533865f117b10d4ff26d0c51e21ba6f_original.png

Choose you destiny
We've made quite a progress with Fighting Arena which we have mentioned in our previous update. Currently we are finishing the special interfaces, shots/impact sounds, particles effects of explosions (grenades/gas canisters), covers, tuning the standard arms balance and adjusting the animations. This process will take 1-2 weeks and we will be ready to release it after a few internal tests.

The Fallen of Object 6 initiative
We have already dispatched our first batch of emails to everyone who expressed their interest in becoming a corpse on the board of our massive space ark (click here for more details). So if you took part in this initiative when our Kickstarter was still in progress and didn't receive any message from us asking how exactly you would like to name your virtual remains, please do it know via comments or personal messages.

Do you see the light at the end if the tunnel?

If this is the first time you hear about this thing or you somehow missed it back in the day, we are happy to announce that we have added a new option to our PayPal store that allows you to join the jolly pile of corpses on Object 6.

Official InSomnia wiki
Recently we've been contacted by Curse! which provides its services as an official wiki resource for biggest Kickstarter titles such as Pillars of Eternity, Numenera, and many more. They've offered us to join their ever growing family and we gladly accepted. Other than having a great online platform for collecting all info regarding the game this partnership means even more publicity for InSomnia via Gamepedia, their social media channels etc. Which is always good!

Click this image to visit official InSomnia wiki

Currently it's quite empty but we believe that with time we will be able to create an awesome resource with the most passionate members of our community being involved!

New screenshots
We know you waited for quite long to get some new info about what is going on with the game, so we can't leave you without a bunch of fresh WIP shots of our screens:

One last thing for today
And as yet another bonus we would like to show you a little video presentation of our studio that we have made some time ago but never came around to actually publish it:

RTwP? I thought it was going to be real-time action combat without any pausing. When did that change?

Anyway, official site is down... vapourware?

It's actually vice-versa: the game was supposed to be RTwP at first and then slowly turned into a roll-playing real-time action game.
More like roll-time action game like all those crappy dark souls genre games.
