Inspirations for weaponry?

I was having a look at the AOD website, I found the following screenshot:

http://www.irontowerstudio.com/images/newGui1.jpg

I was wondering about the inspiration for the weapon on the top right. In India it is called a zirah bouk, a very typical north Indian armor piercing dagger. So was this weapon inspired by Indian designs?

If so, will we see other Indian inspired weaponry?

Yes, it was. We used roman, persian, egyptian, and indian weapons for inspiration. Take a look at this one:

Awesome. I dont think any Indo-Persian weapons have ever appeared in a CRPG before, except for Kukris in NWN.

Since you have some interest, do you have any good pictures? Here is a very interesting Persian battle axe. The design beats the crap out of any fantasy stuff. For some reasons it gives me the Planescape vibe.

That antelope axe isnt Persian - its a typical Indian design. Normally, when you see animals, you know the weapon is Indian, as Islamic cultures generally dont like carvings of animals - the evils of idolatry and all that. Youre right though, it does have that Planescape vibe to it.

Ive got lots of pictures of similar Indian axes:

Heres are some Zaghnals, Indian warhammers:

Certainly better than retarded looking high fantasy warhammers!

Similar war hammers are also found in Persia. In fact, Id wager the word Zaghnal if of Persian origin. Ive saved lots of pics over the years - let me know what youre interested in (daggers, maces, sabers, swords, axes etc), ill upload some.

Persian culture kinda predates Islam, but nevermind.

True, but that doesnt mean that Islam hasnt reshaped much of their culture and values over the past 1300 years. Bringing the topic back to weaponry: interestingly enough there are ceremonial Persian maces with bull/demon heads, revivals of a pre-Islamic past.

A site that was selling it claimed it was Persian, but considering your interest, you probably know better. More pictures please.

Actually, I've got a link to the site:
http://www.gnwtc.com/swordsother.htm

It claims it is Indo-Persian, which is innacurate.

There are some nice maces there, if you havent seen them already.

These flanged maces are called shashpar:

Will you have katars, too? I don't know why, but I really like their concept. It just seems more, how do you say it, direct?

I'd really like to see weaponry like this appear in AOD. That Persian/Indian Battle-Axe with the ram head is simply beautiful. Having more foreign styled gear never/rarely seen in other games as such would most definitely add to AOD's quality, In my opinion.

Some more Indian antelope axes:

These unscrewable daggers are very common inside Indian axes and maces.

A couple of funky designs, inspired from more primitive tribal weapons:

Do you have any of those demon/animal shaped Persian mace heads? Egyptian stuff like this one?

For katars, well start of with some gauntlet katars:

I love the blade on this one:

thickkatarib3.jpg

A diamond blade like this would easily crush its way through armor - specially the chain stuff they use in Indo-Persia.

Oh, 'scissors' katars! The ultimate evil. :D Though, I do wonder how they could be implemented...

Looks interesting, but Ive never seen anything like it before.

For an ancient RPG, you might want to have weapons like the greek kopis or the persian akinakes:
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~ancientp ... apons.html

Heres some of those Persian bull/demon maces:

48560px5.jpg

I had a whole bunch of these pics just this morning, I cant remember where I moved them. It should be noted though that these maces were only for ceremonial use. Most were hollow and therefore useless in battle.

Nothing to stop you from making them proper weapons in AOD though.

Well from what Ive read, scissors katars would have been completely useless in combat, particularly against any armored opponent. Such a weapon would neither be able to pierce through armor, nor effectively chop of a limb. In fact, Ive read that even if the katar was pierced through someones body, it would be impossible to open up the scissors while inside. So the myth of scissor katars is just that. :)

Katars used in actual combat were much more utilitarian, and much more brutal in design, like the diamond bladed katar I posted.

Since people liked the antelope axes, here are some elephant handaxes, native/unique to the Sindh region, where Im from:

bhuj32jc6.jpg

This one has a tiger instead of an elephant.

bhuj2lv2.jpg

No animals on this one, but a nice tip that could pierce through mail.

With a serrated edge!

These are Ottoman sabers, I assume they would have been used in Egypt as well, as it was under Ottoman rule for some time, AFAIK.
