Eh. Also something I would not even think of praising when telling people why Fallout is great. Not essential at all to what makes it "worthy".

It provided a far better RPG experience as a whole, flawed or not. That's enough endorsement for me. The mechanics matter; I never looked at Fallout as an interactive storybook that's fine with any design.

I agree that mechanics matter, and I get that you liked Fallout's mechanics better, but I still don't see why. My point is that the mechanics in both games left a lot to be desired. I guess "more tabletop-y" is a reason to like Fallout's better ... by which I guess you mean it looked more like moving miniatures around on a turn-based battle mat? ... but again, that's not why I thought Fallout was great.

If you mean character mechanics like lockpicking and stuff ... eh. I replayed Fallout last year and I don't remember being particularly dazzled by any of it. Skills let you do things in both games, that was pretty much it. Of course NV had the Bethesda minigames for some of that, but I didn't care about that either way really.

I just don't see how Fallout's mechanics are that substantial a factor in its prestigious status.

They are to me. It's closer to a PnP scenario and the use of the rules is much more substantial and honest.

I've never really thought too much about FO1+2's mechanics. They are detailed and everything, but I wonder how much of it suffered when they dropped GURPS.

It doesn't make it more prestigious, but it makes it a better RPG when you can actually build a character that sucks at using guns, as opposed to behaving like a retard and missing all your shots on purpose.

That's how I see it at least.

Fallout's mechanics are definitely superior to New Vegas', but in some ways New Vegas arguably makes much better use of what it has. For example, (almost) all of the non-combat skills are potentially very useful and see regular use throughout the game, whereas in FO some of them were outright useless or just saw use in a handful of occasions. My biggest gripes with NV's mechanics are the piss-diluted S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and the horrid combat system, which partly go hand in hand (Agility only affects your action points in VATS, Perception has no perceivable effect on accuracy etc.). Going for real-time action combat was not necessarily a terrible move in itself, but stats certainly should've played a much bigger role in it. In general it kind of sucks that you can't make a character that is absolutely terrible in something, whereas in FO you could be incredibly weak, half-blind and deaf or just too dumb to even be able to discuss everyday matters with someone.

At the end of the day, though, New Vegas captures the biggest strengths of Fallout (as Zombra said) and in many places improves upon them, and it also shares many of the same weaknesses, sometimes being a bit better and sometimes notably worse than the original Fallout.

I began playing it last week, haven't even reached the strip yet and must say this game is really good. I kept delaying trying this game out ever since it was released and just now I realize its quality.

It has the shitty Fallout 3 engine and gameplay holding it down, but everything else is pure fallout. A game made by people who can write something good and understand the setting. Cool story, cool setting, lots of C&C, interesting characters and factions, you name it. Highly enjoyable. With all the mods available it can also look quite good nowadays, and with the right setup you can make the gameplay more interesting.

I also restarted playing Fallout New Vegas again.
There were some problems with graphics improvement mods so I have shut those down for now as well as several 'expansion' mods that in the end more clashed that really added to the base game.
One mod I was running opened up Camp Searchlight, in general an okay mod, but it also filled it with loads of stuff to the point that it started to feel like cheating. Same goes for Searchlight Airport, the interior mod looked awesome but again a little bit like a loot house. It would have been awesome if some quests took place here.

(one of my biggest annoyances with Fallout 3 and 4 is the shitload of places that simply exist to be looted, nothing more. FNV of course also had that but to a lesser degree or probably because it was balanced with real settlements and inhabited locations)

In general I don't mind the older graphics and such but occasionally the game still suffers from Fallout 3 hiccups such as NPCs or critters merging with the surroundings, or suddenly being launched into the air like what happened to a bark scorpion I was close by, or pieces of the background simply not finished as I was able to look through a mountain.

The quality of the game still really holds up though and as my last 'Fallout' experience (using that in the loosest of words) was Fallout 4 I immediately felt playing a game with real adventure elements again that did not always require shooting things.

Does make me wonder, if a remake was made that would update the engine and graphics as well as fixing issues like collision detection in order to run more stable, but would keep the core of the game including the models and not do any expanding like say a section of East Arizona, would people like that?

I'm not a big fan of the faces but yeah there's a lot more effort into them. There's a lot of NPCs in New Vegas that look like the developer just picked the first random preset he got.

Is NV worth it? I just cant tell. For every cool thing in the game theres some stupid shit to bring it down. Like the quest design of which i heard good things about. So far ive done 17 of them and some were cool, most were okay but a couple were really dumb, like Fallout 3 dumb. For example the BoS "hunt the virus" bullshit.

You have to run around the room clicking on 10 or so terminals and basically find the virus three times and lock it down. So why dont the BoS just put 10 people on each terminal and do this? Why do i have to run around like a damn fool? Are the BoS just messing with me because i have low intelligence? That would be cool but i dont think so. It seems your int and science dont even matter, you can be a master hacker anyway as long you dont have two broken legs. Bullshit.

How does that even work? OTOH its cool that they can harass eachother sometimes cause theyre so close though im not sure if this is intentional design or just gamebryo being gamebryo.

One other thing i dont know if its intentional or not is that Primm, the first town youre supposed to go, has a rollercoaster. Nothing is made of it and its just there as a landmark. Maybe it was a jab at Bethesda and its theme park approach or something. But i doubt they gave it that much thought next to all the stupid stuff.

Actually the real Primm has a rollercoaster that is probably a recognizable feature of that location, so it makes sense to include that in the game just like other existing Nevada locations, or places that were there were used as a source of inspiration.

Runs on a shit engine and lacks some real polish (I would love more reactivity and better locations' layout design*), but hot damn, I love this game. Gets a little too pretentious (the Ceasar's introduction to his idea is too cringy), but the original and creative writing and real expanding the first Fallouts lore is too good to complain a lot.

*Inappropriate use of already existing assets and some bullshit object placement. The vanilla Freeside with car wrecks lying around for hundreds for years untouched, rubble and shit in the centre of the town, and hundred years old, wasted furniture still used even if should be burned down ages ago, etc. Kinda breaks my immershun. But I guess it's because of limited time and resources to make their own. They had to carve a piece of art from a piece of shit the investor gave them.

Well i didnt know Primm was real. Damn thats really stupid of me. Sure its just a backwater desert town with 436 residents but i agree it really should be common knowledge. Damn:cry:
Besides i wasnt saying its a theme park because of the rollercoster, i was saying it wasnt because they dont do anything with it, unlike in Megaton where theres a nuke and everything revolves around it. But i guess i was giving the devs too much credit. It wouldve been cool but whatever.

There are peeps you can shoot off the rollecoaster and see them gamebryo all the way down. Fun times.

What the game lacked was the quest to reactivate those railways and make the train you can find transporting goods and troops for the faction you choose... but on the other hand... gamebryo Man... Seeing space trains would be at least hilarious though. Make Railroads Great Again!
