It's ridiculously over the top and fun but extremely easy and the gameplay is some of the most shallow gameplay that the genre has to offer.

but extremely easy

I'm getting mixed messages here.

Dark Souls warmed me up to consoltarded shit (well, the decline of PC gaming did that, but whatever). The visuals in this game are giving me eye cancer, but i was thinking it was all about the gameplay. Should i remove from inventory or not?

Depends, do you like this music?

This game is all about the music, if you don't like it, don't bother.

Depends, do you like this music?

Fuck no. :hmmm:

The guy's haircut also doesn't help. Guess i'm back to being a PC master race prick.

The music isn't half bad in game. It has more context and goes well with the fast, furious and flashy combat. Outside of the game it's just generic pre-teen tryhard angst rock. What I mean by saying that it is a easy game is that it is easy by the genre standards. It's still fun and a rewarding game, but there are no deep mechanics and hard combos. It's all flash with enough substance to be entertaining as hell. My biggest advice is to not fully upgrade your weapons. Raiden snowballs into an extremely powerful killing machine to the point where the fun is lost because interesting fights (and boss fights, too) end within minutes if not seconds due to how much damage he does. Higher difficulties doesn't scale enemy health so your solution to this problem doesn't lie there. You just gotta handicap yourself.

I'm getting mixed messages here.

Dark Souls warmed me up to consoltarded shit (well, the decline of PC gaming did that, but whatever). The visuals in this game are giving me eye cancer, but i was thinking it was all about the gameplay. Should i remove from inventory or not?

if you want to delve into the genre, and stay on PC, imho it would be best to start with Devil May Cry 3 SE (still the best imho, but i'm not as experienced in this genre like some other codexers... paging Edward_R_Murrow )

edit: btw, i also hated with a passion the music in MGR:R so i turned it off and fired up foobar in the background

It's ridiculously over the top and fun but extremely easy and the gameplay is some of the most shallow gameplay that the genre has to offer.

Eh, I wouldn't say "extremely easy". MGR on Very Hard (with a fresh start) seemed more difficult than Ninja Gaiden Sigma on Hard to me. It is true though that a lot of MGR's challenge can simply be reduced to timing parries correctly.

Well, pc port of 3 is pretty bad (at least thats what I heard about it). Maybe it would be better to emulate ps2 version or just start with 4, since it have great pc version. As for which game is better, I guess it depends what you want. I would say DMC3 is overall better game although gameplay is bit limited. It offers a lot of weapons and styles but you can use only 2 melee and 2 ranged weapons with one style (its possible to change it between missions or at shops). 4 on the other hand have bit smaller arsenal but after unlocking all of it is available at once. Sadly the game was rushed, second half is just backtracking through beaten levels as different character.

Well, a quick google search shows that DMC3 on PC is a shitty, dumped down (as in they actually changed the gameplay to make the game easier?) port. Maybe i should play it using a PS2 emulator.

I'm not really sure i'm looking for a "genre" either. To me console gaming is completely uncharted territory. I was impressed with the gameplay in Dark Souls so i thought that was a thing with Japanese devs, or something. The art style of a lot of those games is just very hard to digest for me but i figured if the game is good i can close an eye to it (maybe).

Don't know why people are comparing Dark Souls' gameplay to DMC's, they're both difficult for sure, but they handle combat in almost completely opposite ways.

I hear the PC port of DMC4 is actually pretty good, and there are plenty out there who'll tell you that it's got the best combat out of the whole series. Only problems are the fact that you spend the first half playing as a generic shounen anti-hero protagonist, and the fact that the game's basically unfinished level-wise (the second half of the game is literally you going through all the level's you've just beaten in reverse, with all the bosses intact to boot.

Oh, in terms in content and mechanics its identical to ps2 version ( I think someone came up with mod allowing to use all weapons and styles at once). By dumbed down I guess you mean difficulty changes made in Special Edition. That was actually reasonable since english version normal mode was actually hard from japanese one. SE make its normal again which is still pretty challenging.

afaik, no dumbing down for PC, just that the SE edition of the game (on all platforms) got added a "normal"/easy difficulty cause it proved to be too challenging for most on release (or something along those lines). iirc, you can still choose to play on hard at the beginning? the rest is par for the course as far as console ports from 10 years ago go. it's serviceable (particularly if you own a gamepad... i remember struggling quite a bit on kb+m back then and a friend confirmed most advanced manoeuvres were much easier on a gamepad). the music is better, the story is meh but who gives a fuck, the characters are cheesy but kinda charming in that cheesy way, the art style is hit or miss (mostly the former)

Yes I got the PC port for DMC4 and I have zero complaints. It's really good.

As for DMC3, I heard the issue with the initial release was that the Western release's 'Normal' was actually the Japanese version's 'Hard', which was rebalanced in the special edition after complaints that the game was too difficult. The hard mode is still in the SE (though I cannot remember if it's available from the start or you have to unlock it), and normal is still pretty challenging, so it's less dumbing down and more rebalancing.

I torrented it out of pure curiosity to try it out. I couldn't stand the game, especially not the super cheesy jap anime manga crap. Combat looks nice, but it is really boring.

There is one thing with art style, most people are probably not aware of it. Dante and Vergil devil triggers (pretty much super duper mode) design is work of Atlus employee - Kazuma Kaneko.

Its still there, just need to be unlocked. From what I can remember there is also option to unlock all of them by using konami code or something like that.

The original difficulties in NA went:

Easy (unlockable when you die), Normal (default), hard (NG+), Dante Must Die (NG++)

in SE, the difficulties were translated.

Easy (new, unlockable when you die), Easy-> New Normal, Normal -> New Hard (NG+), Hard->Very Hard, DMD

Apparently this is actually the intended way to play the game. The Japanese version had the SE's difficulty and for the western release the devs got the idea that the game needed to be made harder (it really didn't), so they upped the starting difficulty. Also there is a new save system. Previously you could only restart levels when you die by default and with special expensive orbs you could start at the latest checkpoint. In SE you restart at the nearest checkpoint by default and the orbs let you regain your health in-place immediately. Though there is the option to use the old system, if you hate yourself or want to prove to your friends how hardcore you are.

The PC port is basically unchanged. Just badly optimized, with screwy generic button prompts, and with finicky controller support.

Use this mod to fix nearly every issue with the port: http://www.nexusmods.com/devilmaycry3/mods/1/? . Note that it also adds "features" like style switching and stuff which, while really cool, are obviously not intended and probably shouldn't be used on a first playthrough.

Yes, the PC port of DMC4 was insanely good and well optimized.

Aside from Nero being fairly lame the biggest problem with DMC4 was that the best boss in the game (Credo) was the only boss fight that wasn't repeated for Dante. Crime of the century I tell you.

I personally like DmC (reboot) more than 3 or 4. Mostly because enemies are less spongy and there are next to no mazes/puzzles.

What about something like blue Demon Knight, these which can be damaged only by angelic weapons (in theory made for attacking multiply enemies and crowd control). One strong enemy with such requirement sounds like definition of sponge.

You could check out the armored core series, made by the same company that does the Dark Souls/Kingsfield line of games. Though you'd need an emulator or console for that. Very different genre obviously, but widely regarded as having excellent gameplay, and shares some similarities with Dark Souls, like weapon/combat variety, branching/open paths (both within missions and in terms of selecting them) and a significant amount of 'character' customization in the form of equipment.

It's a long running series, the major changes during it being 4 (things went into anime super robot territory with energy fields and insane mobility) and 5 (where they went in the opposite direction and made things much more awkward and clunky.) I linked #2 because it's my favourite, partly due to the massive dueling arenas that disappeared in later titles, but also just due to the overall atmosphere and a lot of the little details like overheating mechanisms, as well as the general pace and variety of missions.

There aren't really any action games similar to Souls (other than Blade of Darkness I suppose), but Ninja Gaiden is closer than DMC/MGR/Bayo. Unfortunately you need a Shitbox or PS3 in order to play it. Could also try God Hand, which is a unique snowflake, and emulates very well.
