Well, I now own all 5 of those games, and have been trying to get through them, one at a time. I started with El Shaddai. Thanks again Black Cat.

So, my girlfriend brought a PS3 with her into the household and while I prefer my single player games on the PC, it's quite fun to play games together on the couch. So, looking for recommendations for good games that can be played in split screen mode. Preferably co-op games, since my girlfriend is somewhat of a sore loser and I'm certainly not a gracious winner. Portal 2 is a favorite of hers and I too thought the co-op mode was entertaining, some of the maps were somewhat challenging to figure out and get the timing right on without being punishing enough to lead to domestic abuse.

Valkyria Chronicles and Dark Souls looks like games I might get for myself though.

VC, Demon's Souls and Dark souls are obvious. Bayonetta, I've never tried since I don't enjoy those type of games, but I heard its damn good. Batman Arkham Asylum and City are also great games. Also, don't forget Armored Core (4) : For Answer. Challenging (though not as much as the predecessors, or so I heard) and fun with lots of customization options. :salute:

Those are the games I think everyone can agree on, in general. Now for some games solely based on my popamole taste.

Uncharted series is pretty nice as far as popamole goes. Do play it on hard though. Assassins' Creed Brotherhood is probably the best AC game you'll get - 1 and 2 lack content and the recent AC : Revelations is the same game as Brotherhood, but shittier. King of Fighters, I guess ? I don't really like these fighter games and probably never will, but KoF was great fun for the price (none) that I got it for.

Co-Op....well shit. You got me there. You find any good co-op games, tell me.

Playing Gran Turismo 5 , probably the best sim like game i played. There is tons to do , karts , nascar, rally, f1, and races with normal cars. Driving on the Driving force GT wheel feels very good.
Now only i need another copy because bluray disc cracked from inside :rpgcodex:

Valkyria Chronicles is OK, but not what i expected from all the codex hype, there is too much shooting and not enough strategy.

Battlefield 1943 is a fun arcade game, worth every penny ( and it costs like 8$ now)

Nba jam on fire is better than i expected, controls are fluid, dunks very nice and Tim Kitzrows comments are probably the best out of all games he was in (i even laughed at some). Playing online vs other people is pmuch fun.

I'm now waiting for NFL blitz to be released on psn store(today should be out) and getting Demons Souls next.

Retail games that weren't mentioned ITT, but are worth getting:

    1. Ninja Gaiden Sigma. It's the PS3 version of the best action game ever made.
    2. Vanquish. It's a popamole shooter minus the turtle pace that makes popamole bad. The game heavily emphasizes constant moving from one cover spot to another. Made by Platinum (former Clover), the guys behind Devil May Cry, God Hand, Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta.

    PSN games:

    1. Outland. It's a Metroidvania with an Ikaruga-esque polarity switching mechanic. So damn good.
    2. Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls. It's Wizardry.
    3. Mega Man 9 and 10. Faithful sequels to the classic 8-bit series, complete with 8-bit visuals. You can even turn sprite flickering on, for maximum authenticity.

    PSOne games:

    1. Vagrant Story. A very unusual dungeon crawler that gives great importance to changing your choice of equipment to best suit the enemy you're fighting. The writing is so good, you won't believe you're playing a Square game. I really should LP it one of these days.
    2. Final Fantasy V. The worst version of the best Final Fantasy game. Very much worth a purchase if you can't get the GBA port. The game's main strength is a flexible job system that allows you to change the classes of your characters between fights. The really fun bit is that most jobs get an empty skill slot that can be filled with skills learned from other jobs.
    3. The Crash Bandicoot games. A series of fun, old-school platformers. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Neo Geo Station. Turns your average PS3 into a Max 330 Mega Pro-Gear Spec gaming monster. The fighting game selection is kinda lacking at this time (no KoF 98, no Garou, no Last Blade), but it has:

    1. Metal Slug. It's Metal Slug.

I didn't like El Shaddai because of the fucking simplistic one button only mashing style of gameplay, which felt too dumbed especially how the dude made DMC all of which but 4 I have played.

Also if you want a decent FPS try battlefield 3 not a big FPS fan but it's fun enough for me.

Also regarding Coo-op that Earth Defense force game that came out has it if you want mindless shooting.

If you want a good FPS thats PS3 only. Get MAG. That's a fantastic FPS that requires good team tactics to win a match. Plus it has 64 Vs 64, levels, tactical strikes, vehicles, etc. It's worth it. It's probably better than BF3, but I cannot confirm this as I have not played BF3. BF3 has better graphics, MAG probably has better gameplay. Seriously, try it out it's probably dirt cheap now too.

While FF5 is indeed the best of the numbered series, avoid the PS1 version like the plauge. Emulate the GBA version if you can't get it, the game's light hearted nature and sense of humor (which the Ps1 versions "translation" utterly ruins) is a huge part of why it is so fun (It allows the party members to not only develop naturally, but the way it allows the group to show they are good trusting friends, which is awesome in a genre of "friends" at eachothers throughts) .

    Also load times.

FFT however, is a PS1 game I can recommend from PSN (unless they screwed up something in the transfer to PSN, played PS1 disc version on PS2)

One question on that: Is your girlfriend an MST3K kind of person?

If she is, there are a handful of jRPGs that have co-op battle systems. The problem is the stories are very, uh... jRPG, but that would be a huge strength if the two of you are able to rif on them.

Eternal Sonata isn't as grand snark bait as I hoped so far though, and there are no Tales games on the PS3 yet in English (Symphonia's battle system is really only fun in co-op as coperating on combos avoided the terribly restrictive system on chaining attacks, and the cut-scenes were fairly easy to make a mockery of, out of battle was fairly bland and it only wound up not being a deal breaker because it was a 2nd play) though.

    Ah yeah.

It also happens that MGS4 is pretty good gameplay, too.

Speaking of decline, have they fully ruined Disgaea 3 and turned it into a shit action game? Or is it still a turn based tactical jRPG?

I only played it a little but it's still the same basic Disgaea engine. Though from what I read (and played) most of the additions (tower attacks? wtf) were really lame and pointless. Maybe Disgaea 4 did better stuff. Thats out now isn't it?

Nope, 3 is still an sRPG. Also seems to have a lot less grinding than 2 for the main story (though at the same time, the first efficient grinding spot is in chapter 7 out of 8, so...).
