How important are the Swordsmanship & Generalship stats? And does the former only affect the duels or also the top down combat somehow?

I don't think swordsmanship influences duels. A low score might slow you down maybe, but I honestly never noticed any difference. It might make people more afraid of you when you insult them though, and I know it influences your final score if you actually manage to beat the game. Generalship is far more important because your troops fight better with each rank. I've had games where I've outnumbered the enemy but lost anyway just because I had a gimp generalship score.
Oh yeah, and this is not about the stats but I throw it in anyway. For the top-down battles flanking is super important, you deal way more damage if you attack from the side/in back than if you clash with a unit face to face. Also, missile troops are very useful for baiting stationary, defending enemies into ambushes. Riflemen can dominate hardcore, so try to keep them close to the action so they can cull the enemy ranks. They even have their own little boom boom sound and everything, gute scheiße and all that.
Oh yeah, and this is not about the stats but I throw it in anyway. Shaggy, malicious, and with an unhealthy interest in the poor female servants, Turizasu has always been an embarrassment to the family. Yet troubled times might just need an equally troubled hero. Turizasu is only third in line, so we better check out the competition:
Doko is is the chump whose father Sutibu cut down in cold blood. He is now top dog, but obviously not for long. He sucks at pretty much everything but he still has his family name and thus enjoys great honour in the clan. He also has a big family, including a hawt young daughter. Hmmmm....
"Hm what lah? You want to sio kan!? This kha-chhng voted against me, you kill them all, leh!"
The new kid on the block. Osoroshi filled the spot left behind by Eijun when he became daimyo. Fairly unimpressive. He is clearly not a threat as of yet, so we might as well leave this loser alone for now.
Our new hero. Turizasu is a solid fighter and an above average general, but he lacks both land and honour. He also needs a waifu to impregnate in order to secure his bloodline. Looks like he has his work cut out for him.
Last and definitely least is that slimy cibai Rihei. He most definitely caused the uprising that cost Sutibu the position of daimyo. Do note how he's never actually at his own fief, he is always skulking about like some thievan in the night. No question about it, this sneaky piece of shit needs a sword or two up his gut!
First, however, Turizasu decides to head out and confront Doko who is currently staying at Lord Mogami's castle.

Marching confidently into the castle, Turizasu tracks down Doko and gets straight to the point, telling him...
He wants to marry his daughter!
Having obviously expected a fight, Doko is stunned by the forward request. On the one hand, he obviously doesn't want to give his precious daughter to some shaggy man-beast like Turizasu. On the other, it would mean an alliance between the two families, and Turi would probably put off trying to kill him - something he might decide to pursue all the more aggressively were Doko to reject the request...
Doko may be a chump, but he can still see a good deal when it schlongs him in the face. Deciding that his little daughter is a fair price to pay for continued peace, he officially pledges to become Turizasu's father-in-law. His other father, of course, is somewhat less enthusiastic...

"Shut up old man, I need sons! Besides, bitch costs no dowry and will double my rep! And didn't you retire already!?"

Paying no heed to Sutibu's feeble protests, Turizasu proceeds to plow the field of his waifu with commendable zeal and vigour.
Marrying poor Kishi has significantly boosted Turizasu's reputation, allowing him to field a much bigger army. He immediately starts recruiting anyone who can hold a sword and agrees to hack'n'slash for his cause.
All in all, Kishi was a truly excellent acquisition.

While Turizasu gathers scum from all across the region, his father-in-law employs some classic judaya tactics to boost income. Those lazy peasants need to know their place, so it's a pretty bro move, considering.

The massive reputation boost from marrying into Doko's prestigious bloodline, the good fortune of spawning Johannesu and the heavy recruiting of meatshields have all contributed to Turizasu's rise in station. With the estate in order and the Daimyo's trust secured, the time has finally come to cut down the scum who turned on old man Sutibu.
Hah! Looks like someone beat us to it! Doko is no more and Sutibu's honour is avenged. Anteki is a buff dude with a horned helmet, so you know he's hardcore. Since his sister Kishi is Turizasu's plow toy, he will probably remain friendly. That leaves the slimy coward Rihei to deal with. Time to pay, cuck boy!

Since cucked Rihei is skulking about and cannot be tracked down, there is currently no opportunity to duel him. Turizasu figures that he might as well squeeze those slothful farmers for some extra wealth.

From the sword in the top-left corner, we know that this piece of shit wanted to sabo the family honour. Well, too bad your ninjas sucked! When you face another hatamoto in cases like these, you can shoot him with arrows or face him in close combat. The former makes you capture the enemy, forcing him to give up some land as compensation. The latter triggers a duel to the death.
Rihei's family can keep their shitty little land - Turizasu wants his fat little head on a pike!
As expected, this waste of air was a complete push-over. Turizasu rushed him and cut him in half, without even sustaining a single hit. Flawless victory!
Turi knows full well that the little cunt Iesada will eventually want to avenge his usless father. Best defence is offense, so he decides to pay him a little visit during the funeral service.
Pathetic wealking as he is, he doesn't dare to face our manly man in combat.

The not quite so monastic warrior monks are back in town. A very large force is nothing to frown at, but neither is the reward for winning. Turizasu has a bigger army than Eijun had back when he beat them, so victory should be possible.
But of course, first things first...

Alright, hopefully Yukinaga is worse than these schmucks were. If not, head chopping will continue until clan rank improves.

Turizasu is surely the finest samurai the clan has ever seen, and with a strapping young heir to boot! At some point Kishi also produced a daughter. Well, might trade her for an alliance or something.
Turizasu's Brother-in-law Anteki still has that great reputation, but he is land-capped and won't be able to expand. Need to make sure he doesn't get any land from raids or missions for Lord Mogami.
New chap is even more honourable than Anteki, but thankfully he is way poorer.
Obviously, the same deal applies here as well, just gotta make sure that fief remains small.
Last and least, the rather pathetic Osoroshi. Seems like he successfully romanced Anteki's daughter Murasame and produced an heir, so at least there's that. That's the second alliance Anteki has going for him.
In fact, everyone seems to get along just fine now that Turizasu has purged the ranks. There probably won't bee too much intrigue to worry about in the near future, so naturally...
It is finally time to put that brand new army to the test!
Anteki has the same idea, but Turi is faster and gets to Mogami's castle double chop chop.
He secures the honour to fight the sohei invaders and prepares himself for the upcoming battle.
The crazy murder monks have one more infantry formation but no cavalry. All in all, a pretty even fight. In order to beat them, Turisazu plans to lure the fanatics into a trap, expose their weak point and flank them for massive damage.
While the archers trade arrows, a simple double teaming bro-smash reams the first infantry blob.
So far so good!
Turizasu plans to use his surviving archers to bait the remaining monks to attack south. Once they move out, they will be smashed between his cavalry and infantry. It is a sound plan, but unfortunately...
The damn archers fire too soon! The double-smash bro-dock maneuver is a no-go, but at least the monks have their backs exposed to the cavalry. No time to waste! Turizasu orders his cavalry to charge while also ordering the archers to stand their ground.
The ploy worked! The archers got cut down, of course, but the delay allowed the cavalry to catch up with the monks.
As soon as they started savaging their rear, the enemy broke formation and fled. Victory!
A moderate piece! Not bad, not bad at all.
Hah! Merely large, this is a sure win. Doing a rinse and repeat, Turizasu hurries to the castle and again snatches the mission before Anteki and his troops can arrive. Sucks to be him!
That's a lot of ashigaru, but they won't stand up to sneaky Finn tactics!
With the enemy surrounded, Turizasu sends in the chump archers, ordering them to draw out the right formation. As they get showered in arrows, they naturally attack and give chase to the retreating missile troops.
As they do, however, Turizasu orders his troops to double-team the remaining infantry.
The archers are toast, but to secure victory you have to sacrifice a few plebs.
Unfortunately the cavalry engaged to soon and had to fight without support. They got cut down to a man, but not before they managed to take out half the enemy unit. The remaining spearmen fall quickly as Turizasu's own ashigaru launch their vicious back-attack.
Meanwhile, the archers took out quite a bit of chumps before perishing, and what remains of their pursuers cannot hope to stand against the superior spear-blob. After a brief clash they retreat and Turizasu secures another victory!
It came at a heavy cost, but lives don't matter when you can recruit endless peasants to fill the gaps.
Small amount of land, well, better than nothing!
Turizasu gets to work, and after a few seasons, the army is once again in great shape.
Osoroshi is getting bullied, but who cares! Turizasu has plenty of honour, land and troops, so there is no need to work for scraps. Better let him struggle.
Anteki helps him instead, and together they smash the Bradylamas. Well, enjoy your reward chump!
Aaaaand it's gone!
A medium force of enemies belonging to the Date clan! This is a good time to avenge the great insult against Sutibu in his youth, when the fief was brutally burnt and pillaged by those wretches.
Once again this cibai rushes for glory, but again Turizasu manages to get there first.
Payback time! Look at those pathetic forces, two measly infantry formations! A far cry from our magnificent army.
Turizasu orders a full frontal attack. This will be over quick.
They never had a chance.
After crushing his enemies, driving them before him and enjoying the lamentations of their women, Turizasu puts his artistic talents to use. With all the eloquence of a true samurai warrior, he immortalises the glorious day by composing a powerful haiku:

not so tough,
since being molested.

Meanwhile, the fragile peace in the clan is shattered as the chump boys start pulling ninja tactics.
This is a bad sign. Probably won't be long until they set their sights on their betters.
Anteki cleansed some trash for Lord Mogami but he only got a tiny reward. No biggie, he's still way behind.
Now this, on the other hand, is another great opportunity.
The warrior monks are back in town, and the samurai who crushes their stupid skulls should get plenty of honour and booty.
As soon as those blossom-spoiling brigand dogs are dealt with, Turizasu vows to teach the sohei another lesson.
Speaking of the brigands...
Their forces were so pathetic that Turi didn't even bother sending in the yari ashigaru.
The riflemen and archers killed a lot of trash while the cavalry held the line, gave chase and cut down the survivors.
Despite the easy victory, the losses are pretty high.
Still, there are plenty of men left, so Turi should have enough to wipe out the monks.
As Turizasu faces the sohei, he employs a new tactic: the dreaded katana move!
While the cavalry charges the enemy archers and leftmost infantry, Turizasu's own archers attack the middle infantry, baiting them south.
Once there, his yari ashigaru overwhelm the fanatics from two directions. Trap sprung!
Towards the end of the battle, Turi's cavalry charges and manages to defeat the remaining sohei all by themselves.
Yet another prestigious victory for our man Turizasu!
Large piece of land baby! LARGE! This means hundreds of new soldiers at the very least.
Meanwhile, the scheming continues as Yukinaga rescues his heir with ninja tactics.
Those Date douchebags are at it again. Daimyo Eijun is not long for this world, and the other hatamoto know it as well.
Predictably, the urgency of Lord Mogami's situation immediately makes Turizasu's low-life rivals expose their ambitions. Osoroshi, the pathetic chump who married Anteki's daughter, honestly seems to think he should be the next daimyo of the clan. Talk about delusional!
Turi, of course, tells the messenger to kindly fuck off or die.
Not long after the exchange... Ninjas in the night!
Turizasu takes out two stealthed assassins, but he takes a hit in the process. Grabbing his wound, he notices a mighty ugly chump coming up the hallway. Being injured, he decides it is better to kill him before it comes to a duel, so he lets loose two arrows from his bow, expertly sending the intruder to his doom.
While Turizasu feeds the remains of Osoroshi to the dogs, weakling Genzaemon takes over the shit-tier fief from his father.
Turi contemplates killing the wretch in a duel, but Genzaemon immediately heads out in ronin rags to pull off nasty ninja knavery.
Might as well wait him out then.
The daimyo provides another campaign against the despicable Date clan, promising land and glory for the victor.
Unfortunately, Turi can't make it due to more pressing concerns at home...
"Must I be interrupted at every turn? Enough of this!"
As always, the son apes after the father.
This cibai even copied his old man's failure so expertly he fell to arrows in the very same spot.
Genzaemon's thievan in the night is not treated as seriously as an assassination attempt, so the weakling wretch is let go after having paid compensation.
Well, not bad, could always use the extra troops.
Meanwhile Anteki defeats the Date scum and claims their fortress, receiving more land and soldiers as a result.
He is still weaker than Turizasu, but he sure works hard at closing the gap.
And clearly, time is running out...

When the time comes, this little cunt will no doubt side with horned-helmet bro over Turi.
Turizasu still outranks Anteki and has almost twice the army. Still, with the support of the two other hatamoto Anteki might still challenge Turi's bid to power. And, would some nasty events transpire to reduce his forces... Why, it would be Sutibu all over again! Time to do it right.

Turizasu's nephew Junkei is fortunately less of a threat than his father was. Even if all three rival hatamoto banded together, Turizasu's great army would still outnumber their forces by a respectable margin. Anteki might have been able to challenge his authority, but these losers? Not a chance in hell.
The only real problem is their ninja tactics, and in order to avoid dishonour from sabo sabo akshun or some other atrocity, like having little Johannesu kidnapped, Turi decides to remain at his estate, train his troops and boost his katana skill.
As expected, it doesn't take long for one of them to stick his ugly mug where it doesn't belong.
Turi makes short work of this insolent wretch, finishing him off with a powerful slashing attack cutting the intruder in half! As the news spread, Yukinaga is succeeded by his dumb son Denko, who believe it or not is even more of a failure. Just where does the clan find these morons?
Junkei wants to marry Turi's daughter, apparently not minding whatsoever that she is in fact his own cousin. To be fair though, Turizasu doesn't care either. One less mouth to feed, and with Junkei marrying Turi's daughter, he won't be able to ally with any other hatamoto. Why the hell not!
Staying home grinding katana-handling, recruiting ashigaru and drilling the troops has paid off. Turizasu's stats are now fully maxed. There is nothing left to do except to donate land to Buddhists. Since Turizasu would never do something disgusting like that, he decides to take his troops out for a little trip.
Of course, butchering Date scum is a reward in itself.
