Tacticular Cancer: We'll have your balls

  1. Having trouble staying logged in? Note: We are rpgcodex.NET not .COM. Trying to login via .com will cause issues. Make sure you are on rpgcodex.net to login and all will be fine.

And if the Password Recovery doesn't work (there was an error transitioning accounts during the upgrade), use the "contact us" link right down the bottom right of the forums and harass us about it. Include your account name and its e-mail address (or whatever parts of it you remember).

"This message is awaiting moderator approval": All new users must pass through our moderation queue before they will be able to post normally. Until your account has "passed" your posts will only be visible to yourself (and moderators) until they are approved. Give us a week to get around to approving / deleting / ignoring your mundane opinion on crap before hassling us about it. Once you have passed the moderation period (think of it as a test), you will be able to post normally, just like all the other retards.

This is a work in progress.

    Why this thread
Considering how many projects, and threads on the Codex, are popping out left and right I thought that an index could come in handy.
The emphasis will be on Kickstarter but projects on Indiegogo and other crowd funding platforms are welcomed as well.

    Featured Crowdfunding Platforms

    Kickstarter

    [IMG]Indiegogo

    [IMG] GAMESPLANET LAB

For tracking the progress of the various projects here a site aptly named:
    Kicktraq

    A Bit of Advice

Here a thread about Making pledges on Kickstarter.com, how does it work.
Obviously, cautiously reading the terms of service is recommended, here some tips:
    • On Kickstarter you are charged only when the project is closed and met its goal.
    • Be warned however that when a goal is met you can't retire your pledge if it means lowering the total amount under the set goal.
    • Currencies different from the USD are automatically converted with a small fee.
    • Indiegogo use a similar system but, prudence, pay attention, some project will charge you even if the goal is not met.
A personal advice, seems that both Kickstarter and Indiegogo have very low standards in filtering the projects, be careful with your money.

    Criteria
The projects will be listed if meet at least one of the following requirements, listed in a hierarchic order:
    • Post in the News Section of the Codex.
    • An active thread in one of the fora.
    • A recommendation from one of the staff members.
    • The developer has a previous history of old school gaming.
    • Meets Codex Standards in a way or another, turn based, isometric, C&C, etc.
Of course everyone can signal a project explaining why should be included.

    Organization
The different sections in which the projects will be organized will depend on Codex interest and number of projects, probably other sections will be added in the future.

The layout of the various sections:
    • Quick Links/Released Games
    • Codex Pet Projects
    • RPGs
    • Strategy Gaming
    • Space Simulators
    • Graphic Adventures
    • FPS/Shooters
    • Action Adventures/Platformers
    • Racing Games
    • JRPGs
    • MMOs
    • Puzzle Games
    • Retro Gaming
    • PnP, Card Games, War Games, Board Games, Tabletop etc.
    • Hardware
    • LULZ & Boycott/Most Funded Projects/Publisher Drama/The Cash Grabs
Traffic lights color code is implemented for its wide recognizability:
Cyan, indicates that the game has been released.
    Green, project funded and closed.
Yellow, project on going, the yellow color will be maintained even if the project is already funded for favoring readability and because there are other goals that the project could meet, point in case Wasteland 2 with the 2.100.000 threshold to hire Avellone.
Orange, the project raised perplexities for various reasons while not being outright a sham.
Red, project failed, however still worth checking, is always possible that it attracted enough attention to produce something.

Note: Many projects can continue to raise funds through Paypal or launch another project after the main campaign has ended so be sure to check the links of projects that interest you even if they were unsuccessful.

    Quick Links:
For rapidly check all the currently running project listed in the various sections.

    Codex Pet Projects
The projects that got Codex attention the most.

Torment: Tides of Numenera A story-driven CRPG crafted in the tradition of Planescape™: Torment & set in the world of Monte Cook's Numenera.
    Project Eternity The Obsidian Kickstarter
Wasteland 2 The new hope for old school.
Divinity: Original Sin Next RPG in the Divinity series featuring classic turn-based combat, non-linear SP campaign with optional coop and a unique RPG editor.

Barkley 2 - an RPG Sequel to Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden Chef Boyardee(Codexer) Kickstarter.
The Banner Saga Ex Bioware present a 2D turn-based tactical strategy/RPG hybrid that gets some love from the Codex, at the end consoles port is announced, drama ensues, explanations are given, all ends with hugs and kissies.
Shadowrun Returns "A graphically rich 2D turn-based single player game with deep story interaction, meaningful character development, and highly-contextual tactical combat", almost too good to be true.

Thorvalla Guido Henkel new project, maker of Realms of Arkania, and model for The Nameless One, together with Neal Hallford, Betrayal at Krondor.

    Special Mention

Grimoire Forever New Cleve's campaign on Indiegogo, with a DEMO, in the official thread you can find some workaround an tips. Most of the issues are from players with Windows 7 64-bit, but seems to have improved with the 1.31 version.

    Ungame Prosper's project on RocketHub

    RPGs
For convenience it will list ARPG, roguelikes and hybrids of various genres, depending on the number of projects a dedicated section could be created.

From shooters to RTS plus various hybrids, all space related.

    Graphic Adventures

    FPS/SHOOTERS

    Action Adventures/Platformers

    Racing Games

    MMOs/MMORPGs

    Puzzle Games

    Retro Gaming

PnP, Card Games, War Games, Board Games, Tabletop etc.

    Hardware

In pure Codexian spirit here the LULZ & Boycott section

Sites dedicated to the Lulziest projects:
Here is possible to revise many failed projects, aptly named Shitstarter.
This other instead is named kickstopper.
There is even a porn version of Kickstarter, GoGoFantasy.

    Most Funded Projects
For whomever is interested here the list of all the closed projects that earned more than 1M$:
Here the list of all funded projects above 100K .

With the release of Kicksatarter games another phenomenon emerged, publisher deals, this sometimes can create dramaso here a dedicated section called PUBLISHER DRAMA.

A special section dedicated to all those projects that are suspected of being just CASH GRABS.

I was using the usual color code of traffic lights, I think it woks better, red can be misleading.

I don't want to encourage such projects in the least, however, now I have created an apposite section for it and its likes.

I was also going to suggest a thread like this.

But please put projects in separate groups, ordered by relevance.

While for example Wasteland and Banner Saga are almost certain to become finished games, others like Dead Linger and Tortured Hearts are very vague and therefore not that interesting right now.

Or do you just want to make a list of all kickstarter projects?

Looks like Banner Saga will end up in the range of 500.000 and Wasteland 2-3 million.
    (April 4)
Banner saga: 359,314 of 100,000 goal, 16 days to go
Wasteland 2: 1,928,593 of 900,000 goal, 13 days to go

Ordering by relevance would be quite arbitrary, I will separate them based on if they have reached the funding goal or not.

Well, Tortured Hearts is the only one that is practically dead, all the others are well on their way of being funded.

Not wanting to start an argument here. But on the one hand you say my suggestion of grouping by relevance would be "too arbitrary", on the other hand you defend the exclusion of certain projects as "absolutely objective".

I am not even disagreeing on the exclusion of the games in question, but your subjective opinion is no more objective than the subjective opinion of anyone else.

If you really want to make a thread about your taste, under the delusion that it is "absolutely objective", then get on with it .. Alternatively, if you want to make a list of all kickstarter projects (minus tactical shhootan'), thanks but I prefer to use kickstarter.com for that.

EDIT: I like the LULZ & Boycott section though.

EDIT2: Why don't you just order the projects by funding level reached, that would practically be the same as I suggested initially (WL2 ~2 million, Banner Saga ~400,000, .. Tortured Hearts 2.000 ), as before separated in groups for funding level reached / not reached, and a third for LULZ etc.

The criteria are quite obvious, projects that get the Codex' attention, principally projects with a dedicated news post in the apposite section, or threads started by Codexers in other sections of the forum that got enough attention.
Also, if all the links point to Codex' threads how you ever thought that this was just a list of all kickstarter projects?

Seeing it's in the GG and not GRPG forum, it seems more appropriate the thread watches all kickstarter games.

I thought what you were doing was a kickstarter watch, where we could quickly find the newest and most interesting projects.

If you only want to make an index of the popular threads on the Codex, I'm fine with that. But I might as well use the forum to see which threads are popular.

(buying stuff via the above links helps us pay the hosting bills)
