Our faith is very inadequate right now, so a power won't do us much good. I think we should research better units.

I'd forgotten that you had to spend faith points to activate your powers !

That makes freeing the imam fairly interesting.

Inshallah, brother Roxor. Soon the infidels will know the power of Allah and His Prophet (PBUH). :outrage:

(I like how the first event basically has "1. Chimp out 2. Chimp out 3. Chimp out" as choices)

SURAH 3 - JUST SELJUK THINGS

201707241731221.jpg

The first vote was near unilateral. Free Jim Profit Asad ad-Din!

201707241731321.jpg

It was a gud choice because Asad is a gud hero. The "general" type, like Raynald of Tripoli.

I give him one point in leader of light inf (more are unnecessary, they only increase the range) and two in heavy inf.

201707241732301.jpg

Also, in case you wondered about the fat bearded dude that replaced the crusader priest - it's an imam :M he has the exact same function.

201707241732561.jpg

Research was split 50/50 between Turk bowmen and consolation prize. The die ultimately favoured the money.

201707241733121.jpg

However, after picking it, we still have 1 research point left. So I go ahead and use it on Confusion.

201707241734091.jpg

Al-Jazira was the only map during the crusader campaign to pit us against assassins. Guess it makes sense to give 'em to us after the mission.

201707241734511.jpg

Here we are, men.

201707241735161.jpg

Here are the other men.

Saracen horsemen, 2x seljuk horsemen, 2x mounted archers, 3x warriors

201707241735521.jpg

and 1x mameluk lancers, newcomers to this LP.

That is a lot of cavalry. Maybe I should get another regiment of spearmen...

201707241736131.jpg

And then there are these men.

All of them are trash tier - crusaders, bowmen, spearmen. Only the single crusader elite unit stands out.

201707241736381.jpg

We might want to leg it to these here bushes.

201707241737141.jpg

The Fremen cavalry of course decides to come after us.

201707241737581.jpg

The infidels, otoh, take their sweet time marching ahead at minimum speed.

201707241738161.jpg

We set up with cavalry and spearmen in front of archers, then unleash hidden fureh.

201707241738321.jpg

Those mounted archers are real motherfuckers, because they never stop. They just keep bouncing to and fro from our dudes. However, for some reason they aren't shooting.

201707241739041.jpg

These dudes are still just marching on cluelessly. Good.

201707241739481.jpg

The rest of the enemy cavalry also just keeps bouncing ahead and back all the time without any purpose :hmmm:

201707241740431.jpg

Until they finally get closer. Maybe they were waiting for the heavy cav.

201707241741051.jpg

I send our horsemen after one mounted archer unit while bombarding the other with archers. Also, seems the seljuk warriors are now coming to beat us up too.

when suddenly...

201707241741201.jpg

:what:

Our seljuk horsemen go from 30 dudes to 14 IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. WHILE

ATTACKING

ARCHERS

IN MELEE

YOU USELESS FUCKERS

201707241742491.jpg

I try to retreat them to safety, but to no avail. The freshly recruited horsemen regiment marks our first casualty in this campaign, and 2nd in this LP :M

I have absolutely no idea what happened back there btw. There might be more to the mounted archers than meets the eye.

201707241743241.jpg

Nevertheless, the cavalry is out, so we pull back a little and start poking the light infantry.

201707241744101.jpg

After which I let Asad and his own seljuk warriors show what they've got.

201707241745331.jpg

Soon it's only the battered horse archers left.

Like I said, real motherfuckers. They just keep running around shooting arrerz, being annoying and impossible to catch.

You can bet your ass they are hiding behind that ravine and yelling "TROLOLOLOLOLOLO"

201707241746151.jpg

Still, we have other concerns.

Plan A - Let them kill eachother - didn't quite work, so we'll have to get our hands elbow-deep in gore.

Also, all of a sudden, Saladin loses 2 bodyguards to the under-half-strength mounted archers that he was chasing...

I have this weird theory that engaging them in melee makes them fire some sort of, I dunno, point blank salvo that does x10 damage. Because nothing else makes sense.

201707241746461.jpg

Starting with these conveniently out of position crusader elite.

201707241747351.jpg

Doesn't take long.

201707241747431.jpg

But it triggers the rest of the fuckers.

201707241748401.jpg

Alhamdulillah, the way they marched across the entire desert throughout the mission has left all of them at 0 stamina.

201707241749291.jpg

So we wait for them to get close and open fire.

201707241750111.jpg

Then try to charge the bowmen with our remaining cavalry once the spearmen are out of the equation.

201707241750301.jpg

Their friends are quick to follow from the other flank.

201707241750581.jpg

MEANWHILE THE SELJUKS BARELY GET CLOSE WHEN THEY GO DOWN TO 4 MEN.

GRANTED, THEY WERE ALREADY WOUNDED BUT FOR FUCK'S SAKE

THOSE WERE LEVEL 0 BOWMEN!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
:rage:

Fortunately, they manage to get away by the skin of their teeth.

201707241751411.jpg

These guys here are a bit confused and refuse to attack our position, which only profits us.

201707241753211.jpg

And once they do get closer - SURPRISE!

201707241753341.jpg

While Asad and the infantry engage the crusaders, Saladin lives his fantasy dream and rides around on horseback, killing things.

201707241754071.jpg

Suddenly some crusaders I haven't noticed run dangerously closer to our archers, lolwut.

201707241754311.jpg

The situation is soon contained, however

(i dont at all like these losses)

201707241756111.jpg

And what's left is mopping up stragglers.

201707241757041.jpg

The map is clear... but no victory!

What could be this great mystery?
mystery.png

201707241757371.jpg

PEEKABOO.

A bunch of panicked spearmen tried to hide in the forest

201707241759091.jpg

ugh

lotsa loot at least

201707241759521.jpg

Zing.

201707241800071.jpg

These reinforcement costs :negative:

Also, meet the assassins. They are basically super-heavy light infantry.

Note the "attack 8, defence 5". The actual numbers hiding under these pointless tags are 1600 HP/piece (hero bodyguards have 2000) 55 resistance (whatever it is, but usually even heavy infantry doesn't go above 40), 140 damage at level 0 (seljuk swordsmen at level 5 currently do 138). Their only problem is their superlow armour (5), but you know what they say. No cover, all man.

They also have an ability that makes them permanently invisible. That's right. No matter the land, no matter if moving, always invisible, unless someone gets close enough to spot them. Which also happens to, if I recall correctly from my first playthrough years back, completely break the enemy AI. Not to mention the near-constant double damage from ambushes.

We shall make great use of these men.

Some level-ups.

201707241801151.jpg

Scatter, obviously.

I also get another light horsemen regiment to replace the fallen.

201707241801461.jpg

I give Asad the new healer as well, for good measure, and raise leader of heavy inf.

And speaking of Asad - imagine him and a bunch of assassins running into the enemy with leader of light infantry triggered (20% damage boost, among other things). Awwww yeah baby.

201707241802061.jpg

Seljuk archer first skill tier is as useless as you'd think. Picked surprise shots.

201707241803221.jpg

New event, with pretty straightforward options.

Do we take +1 faith, or do we add 5 healers for hire? Decisions decisions.

Finally, new maps.

201707241803401.jpg

Damascus.

Suddenly not called "Caliphate of" anymore :rpgcodex:

201707241803511.jpg

Ah, then obviously this should just be a formality.

With the help of the arisen moderate rebels, we shall...

201707241804561.jpg

:abyssgazer:

Three phases.

Phase 1 - kill the crusaders in Damascus.
Phase 2 - build fortifications.
Phase 3 - destroy the massive crusader army that even on the map here outnumbers us almost 3:1...

And all that with just 6 regiments because the rest of the army is blocked from participating!

:what:

And though you might expect the map to give us local reinforcements, there's nothing on the mission maps that would suggest that actually happening :^)

MOVING ON

201707241805061.jpg

Medium looks more reasonable.

201707241805281.jpg

Damned Frenchies.

201707241806021.jpg

Oh, pretty generic then. "Go out there, kill the infidels". Got it.

Asia Minor (aka french plan uphill straight through 9387693847 trebuchets) and Arabia (aka cowardly nobles fleeing through the oasis) are still available too.

SO

- What do with the dervishes?
- Where next to take our trucks of peace?

Use the dervishes to increase faith.

Arabia sounds good, especially since it'll make heavy infantry available.

Assuming Ayyubid Infantry is heavy. I have no idea what that unit is tbh :M

You need to have faith !

(I tried looking it up on the 'net, but the only description I could find said that they were "well-equipped and swift". The first adjective suggests heavy infantry, but the second one suggests light infantry, so I really have no clue.)

Better bowman would've helped with that mission :argh:

Faith so you can use spooky magic.
Edessa to get more cavalry options and restock the coffers.

How useful are the healers?

They bring back 1/3 of losses suffered by a regiment post-battle. There's also an upgrade that doubles that effect. So pretty useful.

SURAH 4 - GIMME DEM DUCAT BILLS

201707261722461.jpg

We tell the dervishes to go forth and destroy preach in the name of Allah.

201707261724091.jpg

Then off to Edessa we go.

201707261724491.jpg

The deja vus are strong.

201707261724581.jpg

Just like in the mission's mirror version, there's a guard post here in the middle of the hill.

201707261725181.jpg

And here's the crusader army. Surprisingly trashy, all of them are generic units - bowmen, light cav, crusaders - except for the light infantry, which are all 100% white company. Guess these talks of a supposed "fierce french noble" were just empty words.

We'll probably want to take the hill with Saladin and our horsemen to crush the light cav, then turn to the rest.

201707261726181.jpg

The race to the hills begins.

But what is this? The crusaders have a third cavalry unit.

201707261726301.jpg

Yep. Chevaliers who were hiding among the trees :abyssgazer:

This suddenly got a bit more serious.

201707261727191.jpg

Fucking fat-ass Saladin is a huge slowpoke, and so he lags a bit behind compared to the enemy knights.

201707261728191.jpg

It's imperative to at least park ourselves on the hill and prevent the crusaders from capping the point.

Also, it seems the chevaliers have a burning intent to go up against Sal. Let's see if we can lure them to our spearmen :smug:

201707261729221.jpg

I split the two enemy cavalry regiments, engaging one 2v1 while the other just stands around trying to cap.

unfortunately, the fucking chevaliers see through our plan and decide to get back here too :negative:

201707261729561.jpg

And the fucking retarded Seljuk horsemen are not fast enough to disengage and get back to the vicinity of the point to stop its capping. P. bad.

I hate how nebulous are the capping ranges for units here. There's nothing that would show them.

201707261730141.jpg

While the cavalry is engaging in shenanigans, the bulk of our troops prepare for the bulk of their troops.

201707261731001.jpg

Meanwhile the chevaliers ARE actually dumb enough to run into the spearmen :smug:

I quickly cast Confusion on them, then follow up from the flank with Saladin.

201707261731521.jpg

Meanwhile manoeuvres go awry, and our fucking Seljuk incompetents start running from the enemy cavalry.

201707261732591.jpg

Fortunately though, the infidels are too retarded themselves to chase after our retreating horsemen, and so they prefer to run straight into our heavy infantry :hero:

201707261733291.jpg

After a brief exchange of archer fire, the cathols get a bit too close for comfort.

201707261734001.jpg

Let's try out these assassins, shall we.

201707261735021.jpg

Sal and the rest of our battered horsemen are finally (almost) done with their shit, but the AI cleverly leaves some heavy infantry behind their archers, so it's not a good time to strike them yet.

201707261735351.jpg

... meanwhile Asad is getting his shit knocked out by fucking crusaders...

are you fucking kidding me you goddamn fucking seljuk cretins I BET YOU ARE A SELJUK TOO ASAD

OR EVEN WORSE, A KURD!

borealesad.jpg

201707261735541.jpg

I retreat Asad and hide him among the assassinos, who in the meantime have wiped out a white company regiment single-handedly and without any losses

201707261736351.jpg

A peculiar disco erupts afterwards, as three different units start breaking:

- Crusaders attacked by assassins
- Dying white company
- Our seljuk warriors attacked by crusaders

201707261736451.jpg

Yeah, fuck it. Our archers put one bowmen regiment to flight, so we trample them down.

201707261737381.jpg

Then engage in some herding with Asad and Sal. I also call in the seljuk horsemen for possible trampling assistance.

201707261738431.jpg

The crusaders are kind of confused which archer regiment to protect, which allows Saladin to murder one of them.

201707261739061.jpg

After which they come to a full stop and refuse to budge :D

201707261739471.jpg

A domino charge is enough

201707261740011.jpg

to break them for good.

201707261740361.jpg

These fucking losses I swear. Mostly seljuk warriors fortunately, but still... :negative:

Also terrible loot.

201707261741471.jpg

Yeah, these reinforcement costs remind me of something. Ugh. Also, I call bullshit on these fucking healers. Asad lost 3 dudes - the healer should have brought one back. BUT HE DIDNT, SO HE DIDN'T!

Reinforcing everyone and leaving Sal and Asad for last obviously leaves us with 0 geld :M Which is at least one change from the crusader campaign, cuz this time the game doesn't even leave us a single consolation ducat :M

However, on the flipside we get this regiment of Circassian Horsemen. Briefly checking their stats, I think they area a 1:1 copy of Knights Templar. Das ist gut, Saladin could use some able bodyguards.

201707261743021.jpg

We also get this relic. At first I was thinking of selling it, because it's pretty bad, but then I remembered horse archer shenanigans and reconsidered... for now.

Some level-ups

201707261743261.jpg

Ambush is incredibly tempting, but they need the armour boost from persistence. With persistence and Asad's leadership ability, their armour will spring from 5 to 45.

201707261743491.jpg

The spearmen, otoh, have all defensive stats SO ridiculously pathetic that this ability even looks like a good idea. 0 reduced by 50% is still 0.

201707261744281.jpg

And resilience for the swordsmen is a no-brainer.

201707261745151.jpg

Let's see what has unlocked.

But what is this? A politicool event in the middle of an enemy province?

201707261745211.jpg

Ah, pathetic infidel dogs! Their gold-grubbing ways have sent them straight into our grasp!

Obviously we'll have them all beheaded, but for the moment we can put up some taqiyya and promise them independence in return for goods.

- The lord of Badspelling will bribe us with an armour and a weapon.
- Sidon will grant us lebensraum for +1 faith.
- Galilee will give us some elder scrolls with 5 upgrade points.

New map unlocks:

201707261746091.jpg

Antioch. Lotsa ducats from this one.

Also - note how p. much every mission gives us a new unit. I sure feel stupid now for wasting money on those fucking seljuk warriors.

201707261746121.jpg

Interesting.

201707261746401.jpg

Okay this map looks kind of retarded. Seems there are MUSLIM warriors with siege weapons out there in Antioch, and there are two crusader detachments heading to kill them. There's also nothing there that really suggests these Muslims are friendly towards us, especially since we can buy sabotage... :M And why the fuck does it say "Christian army is divided into three groups"? :M Could be a bug, could be an oversight... could be an early grave!

201707261747151.jpg

Lesser Armenia.

No ducats? Buncha misers :rpgcodex:

201707261747201.jpg

I'm fairly sure Raynald de Chatillon has already appeared in this LP, but I can't place him anywhere specific. Sounds like a p. despicable fellow indeed!

201707261747521.jpg

As straightforward as you can get. Move in, kill them all. Watch out for guard towers. Very similar to the crusader version then.

201707261748021.jpg

Seljuk Sultanate!

No ducats as well? FFS :x

201707261748161.jpg

These palace guards sure have been holding out for long.

201707261749041.jpg

Two phases, more or less.

1. Behead the infidels across the map to free the Turks (or at least I think so? The descriptions and previews are kind of unclear).
2. Survive an onslaught of Christian reinforcements coming from all sides.

Reminder: other available missions are Arabia (oasis), Asia Minor (Hamburger Hill), Damascus (yeah, no)

So, as always, al-Codexiyya:

- Whose bribe do we take?
- Whose butt shall we kick?

Changed my mind about the first choice. More faith is good, but getting more abilities comes first. So let's go with Galilee.

We really need more shekels, so I vote for Antioch.

Upgrade points from galilee seems a no brainer. Cash is also good, so lets go antioch, with luck we'll also pick up a holy hand grenade.
