Have you played Cosmic Star Heroine? How is it? Asking for a friend.

I haven't tried it yet, but I read good reviews about it.

Do you have any recommendation as a first good jrpg for a newb? The only jrpg I've played are this one and the previous from the dev.

Chrono Trigger should be right for you then, seeing that it is short and easy while lacking anime faggotry. Avoid the "sequel" Chrono Chross, it's unrelated and has experimental mechanics.
After that Final Fantasy IV-VII should be good for more "proper" JRPGs.

Most of Shin Megami/MegaTen games are also awesome and usually lack anime stupidity (until the arrival of Persona 4 at least), but they're quite hard.

Thanks! I'll definitely check Chrono Trigger once I have time.

Part IX: Losing our Way

In which we'll walk into all the dead-ends we can find and explore a small dungeon.

7202D14DB149886F9003B62625773D79630AC3CD

1086F4367BB7DF7551CB73E48C8DFD4DFAE084C0

We're continuing our adventure on a new part of the world map, leaving behind Dunwitch

8DB1A3405CA55620D0DF132BCE729246EC46FE37

Color-swapped enemies. But we'll still meet new faces to beat into the ground in this update.

B208E3F03418C601813BB70FF7A728C0B9489882

See? I told you there would some variety.

07522F5E0ECC8BEC95AE44EBE9790C8C870155A9

Not this way...

67272950BC3271CA346DBE9A39FFFEB71EF5F9B5

The uglier they are...

Not that way...

0549BCBF9095877E08D23A4CFF3540B774D2DD33

Instead of going to the main quest, which is in a forest on the other side of those mountains, we'll explore a side-dungeon.

B4300EDE1CA046C000209985F68761AB3084A0A5

For the palette of this dungeon, we'll go with swamp green and grey. It's called the swamps of despair, so you know it's serious shit.

3F3F3209C0A0B14573A94B51A758CD340978EB0D

64C25F9DF239A8333B3909F012145151BF67FF88

New enemies. We'll see a great number of werewolves in this cave and we'll often use insanity on them to speed up their elimination.

F77B4BFD3A2EDC7692C0F602ADA7E7EBD7823E8F

Not that way...

7ECE7480F813832A051976385CA383CE889ECB54

Half-horse, half-man, but barely a speed bump for Cthulhu & Co.
B06A169C2E225DC461B21CB7D390A82A4B44B6F6

Not this way...

BEBC68FBADB1BDBF9AB07DBFE95E6F2215943061

October got a fireball spell which will hit all enemies of the same type, which burned those snails in one turn.

E85C7652AAC6BA6BE667AE4D57E873298C4634B3

We find a pretty good blade for our hovering sword.

1ABD8676AE53AC00569B9D8F217263E15A685C3B

We then reach the treasure of the dungeon when:

1Rm0BbX.png
As you pull your treasure out of the chest, the guardian of the swamp appears - the dreaded Fire Whale! Watch out!

FB2F36203B978DB947CC167BA43225627B110618

I tried to think of a joke either with Ishmael or a fire Landwhale, couldn't think of any.

7912F0C11F9DF408B6750926D1D8AFB9E9E2866C

We raise the combo meter so that Sharpe can deal a devastating blow against the whale. Victory followed soon after.

DF19E47DE65B863F38375B01C16FAA985FF65727

Now October can equip her new grimoire.

We've also had level-ups for everyone, with October getting a new poison spell, but I've forgotten to capture it. The rest is just stats.

F62CF5571DA7E2C9E9B83336CCDA0FA6207F4CCC

We then move to the main quest, through the Ghost Forest.

4094769ED78F6B677CD587F6D64B025EA576C58E

Spooky ambiance
A0DB990CAB6994813CEE7F25DEE985598383EC67

It's supposed to be a statue of Cthulhu.

XrByPkD.jpg
What is this place?
LLrYgcf.jpg
A cult worship site. We should be on our guard.
XrByPkD.jpg
But they worship Cthulhu, right? We should be safe, right?
LLrYgcf.jpg
Not necessarily. Cultists aren't known for being reasonable. They will probably attack everyone on sight, even their own god.
XrByPkD.jpg
You have some weird followers!
Z0wPC0B.jpg
You're telling me!

On one hand cultist going against their god might be original, but it still feel lazy. It would have been better to have the choice to fight or not, but that's not the type of game we're playing here.

I'll leave you with this riveting cliffhanger. Until nex time!

Edit: Yay for page 2!

Part X: The Spooky Forest
mystery.png

So last time we stopped, we've just entered a new dungeon, the Ghost Forest, frequented by cultist of good old Cthulhu.

FBF928E7B1211BA44306E77FEF960822F00120AE

For this dungeon, I mostly wandered around getting lost and killing a bunch of enemies.

E9AA53BF782F2FB6B56EBD1C3E98685555F85DAB

New enemy types.
3D75F9958CF0EF9BA4C615F3D8683F848F7EE8E5

This whip allows October's basic attack to hit multiple enemies. But since her attack is weak, especially compared to her spells, it's a bit lackluster.

85847869580E850E7D745AD2C446D6DD739076EE

New enemies, including the aforementionned cultists hanging around this forest.

26FC84F54D11BF195A0BCA07C8F14D2F1C3F5EFE

We get a level-up for Sharpe, giving him a new stronger attack.

We got a tunic for Cthulhu. It's not a direct upgrade, more like a side-grade with more magical protection and damage.

The dungeon is separated in a few different maps.

2ECB3468FBBF237B1C310941A7C10DAE736CE496

So how do we get to the chest? By losing our way on the map and walking circle until we find it, of course!

2B2F005E74C408A84BAF13BC91C72D793B351F7E

Umi and Cthulhu get level-up, but only stats for Cthulhu.

October got the last level-up of the dungeon, upgrading her fireball, making it more useful to clean-up trash mobs.

We swing by the armorer to buy some new weapons and armors. We got a new sword for Cthulhu and new armors for everyone else.

Then we visit the villages, meeting the inhabitants.

Been there, done that. Crystals are overrated. Pass.

106E5417279507216B02E75D21647CB761CF8F39

With that done we leave Providence and head to the other side of the lake.

which is reached quickly enough.

What adventures does await us in the ranch? We'll see next time!
And since it was rather short, I'll try to finish the next part this week-end or the may, 1st, since it's a national holiday here.

I've been waiting for you, Cthulhu.
bJZiaLl.jpg
Paws! Long time no see! How's life on your home planet of Ulthar?
kTbSbvC.jpg
Violent as ever.
bJZiaLl.jpg
Good to hear it. So what are you doing in this neck of the galaxy?
kTbSbvC.jpg
My people have sent this ship on a mission to take over this world. By abducting cows and injecting them with DNA mutagens, we have been creating an army of immense proportions. Before long, we'll have enought firepower to take this entire planet with ease.
9dKG6gN.png
We can't let you do that! Tell him, Cthulhu! You're a good guy now!
VZdUVjS.jpg
I'm afraid it's true.
kTbSbvC.jpg
I know. I've been monitoring you. That's why I've brought you here. I've grown tired of the Ultharian's constant warmongering. Please, lend me your aid in foiling their plans.

I thought you'd never ask! Why, it'll be just like our old college days! Fighting against the establishment, not taking guff from no one!

How the game work with more than four characters in our team.

XrByPkD.jpg
I wonder why no one has noticed this space ship other than the rancher.
kTbSbvC.jpg
That's easy to explain. The ship has a cloaking device that is only disabled when we activate the tractor beam.
XrByPkD.jpg
Cloaking device? Tractor beam? Huh?:retarded:

We have to deactivate a barrier to start progressing in the dungeon.

And then we're off to explore this UFO!

FA535179E3038D62882B4821E73038DA276D205F

We meet and killed bunch of uglies. The cow are those abducted from the ranch below, at least this enemies have an explanation for their presence there.

F225BC2E69380C66FA601C56C51177B8DA2311D7

Umi and our new pal Paws get a new level. Paws has been a little underwhelming, his biggest use so far is his very high agility and a spell inflicting insanity on all enemies, which we use during all the dungeon. Making sure that our first move in a combat is applying insanity on enemies make sure that all subsequent attacks lands on insane enemies, increasing the damage taken.

D6684B4241F250851F2003EB4C0A3B766CE836D2

This chest was locked behind a force field, but the switch was just above, so it was a bit lame. The new weapon is good though, even if we didn't use Umi a lot in the dungeon, since Paws also has healing spells if needed.

The new multi-character combo are buffs for the combinations with Cthulhu, Umi and October...
244593FD3AA9CF1CF59FAE2B61B62F67F548DBA3

... and a random attack with Sharpe. The buffs seems useless and the random attacks are not worth using the turn of two characters.

7D899854A3486C9F0B407EC4CCF450A37B363AA7

We meet a few more aliens, which are cats like Paws. I would have prefered Sectoid-like enemies, keeping a little bit of the retro feel.

The enemies in the middle give defense buff to the rest of the enemies, making them a priority target.

We have to deactivate a few more barriers to progress.

EF4FF1B8CA34A11B9FBEC24BD6DB717ED3458823

Even the members not on the team are getting XP, the lazy bastards. On the other hand, it meens we won't have to grind to level-up the other characters.

F2B0E52E6D7DD380962AF74BE7A5EE3AC7756003

A pretty good sword for Cthulhu.

631B4330EDE4353C27A17912C338F04D825DA22C

A kind of mini-boss, but in a random encounter.

98DFF547162082007790C181569B5386245C68C4

More level-up, plus Sharpe and Paws (stats only). Having a spell targeting all the enemies is useful to remove a bunch of weak enemies at once and October's spell is more powerful than the other which were already available.

9325A1178933009F0246825407E7B76EBE9C66D8

70ED1D91F462C9BAEBD2E9DE7C7B182BA1D0FAA0

We reach another floor.

FF9DB9F2826BF0B79847E8BD1A9AAF992C5683A2

Cthulhu admires the view.

0776CA74DCC1E940E37A760FC6CE8CE18C60EB35

This book is for October and increase the damage her lighting spell. The one she had previously was increasing fire damage, but her fireball spell is useful to kill multiple weak enemies, whereas her lighting spell is better against a single target. So we'll be using this one, since the boss is not far.

CB05F229416E9E03DAF4072630C0BAAB0D3CE95C

We're visiting some kind of cat lounge? At this point, the 25 random encounters for this dungeon have been exhausted, so I can explore without interrupts.

91D4B6F4DF7714BB13BA9F3A15057AF9313374B6

A pretty good armor for Cthulhu.

363FBB566EAB545A3484C78BA5D4B34634CE88CF

And we reach the final boss, appropriately at the top of the ship.

I'll stop there, since I think we'll have again a bunch of dialogue and the update should be long enough.

'Paws'? 'Surely 'Whiskers' would've been a better name.

Should have gone with the traditional Nigger-man, but I seriously doubt the devs could manage to write it without collapsing.

That said, this got me to re-read Lovecraft's cat essay. The guy had a gift in trolling creatively.

Lovecraft said:
We have but to glance analytically at the two animals to see the points pile up in favour of the cat. Beauty, which is probably the only thing of any basic significance in all the cosmos, ought to be our chief criterion; and here the cat excels so brilliantly that all comparisons collapse. Some dogs, it is true, have beauty in a very ample degree; but even the highest level of canine beauty falls far below the feline average. The cat is classic whilst the dog is Gothic—nowhere in the animal world can we discover such really Hellenic perfection of form, with anatomy adapted to function, as in the felidae. Puss is a Doric temple—an Ionic colonnade—in the utter classicism of its structural and decorative harmonies. And this is just as true kinetically as statically, for art has no parallel for the bewitching grace of the cat’s slightest motion. The sheer, perfect aestheticism of kitty’s lazy stretchings, industrious face-washings, playful rollings, and little involuntary shiftings in sleep is something as keen and vital as the best pastoral poetry or genre painting; whilst the unerring accuracy of his leaping and springing, running and hunting, has an art-value just as high in a more spirited way.

Well, I knew that someone was still following this thread and I wanted to acknowledge that.

Half of the update has the images borked, though. Is that normal? It's my browser?

It's a curse?

I don't know, I haven't see any problem on my side. I'm using the steam screenshots, they should have been uploaded with public visibility.

Pawz! My evil one-eyed twin!
How, that's original. But I don't think he'll see the error of his way and join our party as a anti-hero with a troubled past, since the furry character slot is already taken in our team.

That boss has all the same offensive spells than Paws, which makes sense since they are brothers. But, compared to the previous boss, at the end of the ghost forest, this one was a total pushover, winning easily on our first try. I think we might be a little over-leveled, since few fights in this dungeon gave us any problems. Either way, between the best attacks of Cthulhu and Sharpe, the poison + debuff from October, we made short work of him. Paws just applied the initial insanity on Pawz and healed the rest of the party, he hasn't has any other usefull spells.

So instead of a flying ship to move around like in a classic jRPG, the designer/writer decided to crash it. Well, since I did not expect to have another mean of transportation, I'm not dissapointed. At least it opened the map in an interesting way.

Instead of going forward, we go back to the ranch:
45A9F4EF7A5E0172CE0080E47FD65DBD0946BDBD

85A1A758D8BDFC3BFB89ADB14D339DC715ABC7F6

Wow! Consequences! The world reacts to our actions! That's like the second time since the begining of the game!:incline:

Indeed. It's like something out of a video game.

84617ACA5012546BF6349183B9D0954E6FC2138F

And so we can follow the stream bed, conviently dried following our actions.

It's a bit short, but that way I can wrap that chapter of the game. I'll try to have the next part at the end this week. I liked the appearance of this dungeon, it's way better than the others, with more different elements and distinct rooms, like the cat lounge we saw last update. Also being in a space ship was cool.

In which we'll explore a calm resting place.

06BFFD7A3C1E441562B202CA2C7ECF07C27E510B

We were going south. To the west we can go back to the area we crossed in update 9. Not that there is anything to do there now.

B89D0012852916165577EACC846AE1A59CF5B498

We fight some scrubs along the way.
407C7E281AD949906B17772541CE235FC55D3659

0FA3CFFC6B0C64E01E0FB3E26ED16C5D594D5EC4

As stupid as they are, the scream cone got a chuckle out of me. It sure beat killing darkspawn for the whole game.

2DC34A082A9705F4630B6851A0A01CFA94A1901C

We quickly reach the next dungeon...
926D5A4B2948749D582D12C084CA90389D9F0650

... and enter the Graveyard of memories, which is optional, but I only realized this after finishing it.

27F000F2492E1AF6FAAC40DC536F2932E8F146A3

At this point, we're finishing most fights in two turns, with Paws applying insanity to all the enemies, October burning a whole group each time with her fireball and Sharpe & Cthulhu finishing the stronger enemies with special attacks. Then there's usually one enemy left, which is pwned by the whole team.

744142E80C1FD63C852B549D0B6D5508E2892154

A2AEB3497EE0811EA9901A48F516B556603CF19A

Paws and Sharpe level-up. Paws get a tentacle attack, like Cthulhu, but it does less damage, so it does not improve his capabilities for dealing damage. Sharpe improve one of his attack, but increase his MP cost, which is a problem, since Sharpe is rather limited on that front, especially compared to the spellcasters.

There's a lot of graves in this dungeon, with a different epitaph on each one. A part of them has interesting enough text that I'll bother to copy it here (parts not in italics are remarks from me).

Patricia Wise
Got into the dark arts.
Then the dark arts got into her.

Milan Doyle
<Inset funny joke here>

Stephan Briggs
Money isn't everything, but let him buy this swell burial plot.

Magnus Gill
Failed to break his own record for holding his breath under water.

Rayvan Floyd
He didn't realize he was dead until the next day.

Levin Hammond
Literally and figuratively died laughing.

Virginia Conner
No one is searching for her now.

Terminator, I guess.

Helen Guthrie
Studied the harp all through her life just to be prepared.

Reference to Orpheus, much more :obviously:.

This is the quintessential tombstone. Can't get more tombstoney than this.

Shannon Boyd.
Lover of sushi and cake, but not sushi cake.
Robert Boyd
Worked better under dead-lines

It might be relatives of the dev. Shannon is cited in the credits, in the special thanks part.

You see a completely ordinary tombstone. Yes, absolutely nothing unusual here. Keep walking.

Alexei Riddle.
She found a mistake in the map obstruction code and walked out of the game.

It's a necromancer tradition. Having your own tombstone is supposed to bring good luck.

Weird.

Ian Fleming
I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.

It's an actual quote from Fleming from one of the James Bond books, who might have taken it from Jack London.

Garrison Keillor
They say such nice things about people at their funerals that it makes me sad to realize that I'm going to miss mine by just a few days.

It's a portable tombstone! For when you really aren't exactly sure where someone is buried.

You look at the tombstone.
The tombstone looks back.

:Nietzsche:

Abigail Salas
Living until the very end.

Arda Blevins

Zehra Branch
Crushed to death by her beloved cherry blossom tree.

Hugo Rivers
Famous science fiction writer. May you sail among the stars.

Reference to Hugo Gernsback I think, who gave his name to the Hugo awards.

Caden Cobb
Claimed he would never die.
My hatchet sure showed him!

We're still fighting undead, but they're not much of a threat.

Charles Burgess
Lived to a ripe old age.
Ripened even further when we failed to bury him for a month.

Aryen Valdez
Beloved father,
Friend to all,
Really awesome cultist.

Anna Cole
Prettier in death than she ever was in life.

This a lode bearing tombstone. Please do not remove.
I don't know if there's a mistake with lode instead of load, cause load-bearing means something and would explain the "do not remove".

42C03C889326BF07C949EB478693D743D21EC741

There's a chest hidden behind those trees.

Jayden Graham
A cookie a day keepss the doctor very busy.

Lucy Ford
Died while crossing a river in the middle of Winter.

Felix Morris
Died in a random encounter. How lame is that?

Ruby Green
Died of embarassment from the name that her parents gave her.

Loot for October. A good upgrade, compared to her current weapon.

Your Name
That's right, this tomb has your name on it! Yes, you! The person with the controller! Scared yet?

Oliver Hill's hand
All that we found of him was his hand so that what's buried here.

Woody Allen
I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying.

Actual quote. I would have thought it was the other way around, considering his job as a film director.

Mark Twain
The report of my death was an exageration.

As you pull your treasure out of the chest, the guardian of the cemetery appears - the dreaded Living Tombstone! Watch out!

06918CEE17D8E2264F6A7D7A0D734564C6735661

The Tombstone will raise the knights when they are dead. So Cthulhu and Sharpe will kill them at each turn, so that the Tombstone waste its turn, while the two remaining characters concentrate on killing the Tombstone.
The rest of the team gained a level after the boss fight.

E77D198FD93B88FF77D46DED75B616E3493AD1D0

And now we've finished this side-dungeon, we'll go back on the rails of the main quest.

A party? Why, yes, I like parties.
1Rm0BbX.png
Old man, Dacre, has joined your party!
LLrYgcf.jpg
We don't have much time. We must find that magic pool of water before more people die.

3WpqVv6.jpg
It's a good thing we showed up, Dacre. Your offensive capabilities are minimal - you wouldn't be able to defeat the monsters here in the Water Shrine by yourself.
VxoLJbl.jpg
This old man has a few secrets up his sleeve. Ho ho ho!
apnbK6G.jpg
Santa for sure.

So we're joined by a new party member, Dacre.
10530DA9ACC24DB2240DDDB8F30CB34C0694A7C5

He's a healer, with a wider range of healing spell than both Umi and Paws, two debuff (blind and seal) but no offensive spell. We'll take him in our party and see how it goes.

E59D7952AC1B1A110D41268D9EDC823330F42175

We can now start exploring the Water TempleShrine.

6F1A40D44EE8E6666D4C515146A44AFDCAA55186

We quickly meet the some of the local creep.

E4A938AB04A6FBEA3518D7034DBB9B4D34A2E6EC

We switch Dacre out of the team, replacing him with Paws and Sharpe is replaced by Umi. Having only healing spells, Dacre is not very usefull to kill the random encounters. In that regard, Paws is very usefull for them, since he can apply insanity right at the start of the first turn, ensuring that all our subsequent attacks lands on insane enemies and benefiting from the increase damage.
Finishing combats as quickly as possible is important, since it allows the team to recover more MP (shorter fights = more MP recovered). But on the other hand, his lack of good spells limits his utility for the boss fight, so I'll switch back Dacre in for the final fight.
Sharpe is very good at dealing damage but his limited MP pools makes him less useful for random fights. So I replaced him by Umi, which has decent spells to deal with the randos and a big MP pool. Again for the boss I'll switch back Sharpe in, since he has a better damage capability and we'll have Dacre as a healer.

Or I could use any party, the game is on normal and I've rarely had any problem with the fights (last time was in the ghost forest 3? dungeons ago), especially since I'm doing all the side-content, so I must be a little overleveled. On the other hand, I've tried restarting the game on hard, I got killed on the third fight and abandonned the idea :negative:.

0C2F6209BD671A64FBF835CEC703F5577635966A

So we cross the first area to this lever. Swtiching lower the water level and opens up new paths.

We continue our progress. The switch will have to be done a few more times before the end of the dungeon.

Since the bridge are made of wood, they rest on the ground when there's no water, blocking our path.

Rising the water rise the bridges with it, allowing us to progress again.

9B028BB52C286890E3354EC51C7172D6DFFBE4A6

A new attack, quite strong considering that only a few monsters in this dungeon have more than a 1000 HP.
883B55C2FA66C7E22F7680D6D59FD4A6AD3EB61D

Dacre gets a defensive buff, but its usefullness would depends if it applies on base stats + equipement or just base stats. And since there's no way to check...

We continue to make our way through the dungeon.
5D070212ED5F4BC94F5191F2655494DD286767C2

A good sword for Cthulhu.
8F5ED09222B7E087D252350CE88A9C603B44B0F8

We find a new weapon for Umi. Except we found the same, like four or five dungeons ago and now it's useless.:decline:

After the last switch, we reach the MP refill station, indicating that the boss is next.

After changing our party to the one we intended to use, we get close to a big statue of a mermaid.

The boss is killed very easily. He wasted his first two turns by poisoning everyone, which is countered by Dacre's Regen All spell, which heal the whole party every turn. October applies a debuff and poisons him, Cthulhu and Sharpe unload their most powerful attacks and the shoggoth goes down quickly.
The rest of the party level-up, bringing everyone to level 25.

Now we can travel by boat, since the sailors are healed.

I bet the developer was too lazy to make another map so he just stuck a sailor in front to block the door.

Shoot! We've been found out!

The warlocks are very annoying, since they have resistance to fire and have a very powerfull fireball that will hit all of our group.

This group managed to defeat me, with the three warlock dropping fireballs on the whole group, doing too much damage for us to recover. At least I learned and the next times, the warlocks were priority targets.

9877C6B3686D114879CFF34DCDD767DB0E6B598A

With this, Sharpe is now even more of a glass canon.

The layout of the dungeon was very labyrinthic and since all the backgrounds were the same, it was annoying to explore.

EE8AAD8A825BE5A02CB52F772FD4D163CE561353

An upgrade for Umi
BC79694FF34B8F6A478F2684A5E9F36EF7B41139

A sword for Cthulhu. This sword applies insanity to all enemies as soon as the combat is started, so Paws become useless and I replace him with Umi, who has a nice selection of spells.

We leveled up like crazy in that cave, 4 levels for Dacre and 3 for the rest. I don't know why since, apart from the warlocks, it wasn't too hard. In any case, the rewards seemed too high for this dungeon.

We've reached the final chest and the associated boss fight.
56A6C24C3F9648379E5B7E6E6D2D97440E4CAA19

1Rm0BbX.png
As you pull your treasure out of the chest, the guardian of the ice cave appears - the dreaded Fallen Angel! Watch out!
66CDDA10B59122228BF770FA47045653B4DDCC32

3EVcVN5.jpg

We failed the first time, with the Fallen Angel using spells damaging the whole party and with only Umi having healing spells, I couldn't heal fast enough. So I restarted, having switched Umi with Dacre, who has healing spells which are more powerfull, allowing us to survive the spells from the Angel. With this taken care of, the boss dies easily.

With the dungeon being so annoying to go through, I quick travel back to Kingsport and cross the sea again to save time.

With this done, next time we'll continue exploring this new region.
