After creating the thread and asking questions about this game, I thought I should play this game and complete it. Since I'm doing that might as well do an LP. Now, one world of caution, this is my first LP, so it will be clunky, it will have some lame attempts of humour so you've been warned :)

So this time I'm playing the patched version. When I first tried playing the game I didn't have access to the patch

Thanks for the encouragement! And without further ado, here's the intro:

By a beautiful evening...

Character Creation

So the first highlighted option is to quit to dos... not very 'welcoming' is it?

LXSLX.jpg

Yep that sounds right

arrpv.jpg

First obstacle

WiFGf.jpg

And so we go to the next step which has unfortunately become a bit of a lost art these days... The character creation!!

vyrv5.jpg

So every time you reroll, it means that the candidate was not suitable. It's a lot of fun to be the casting director :)

TA8L5.jpg

So here's our first hero

f4LHY.jpg

Oowem.jpg
Hello my name is Kenshiro and I'm here to beat down evil with my fist! Thanks for choosing me

And for the next recruit:

I'll be providing the gold I suppose...

The party limit is 8 characters but I had to create the last class

We will not be using him much I think, but let's see...

xYYI7.jpg

jL0pW.jpg
Where's my forge?

(There was no portrait that looked specifically like an ogre...)

If I wanted to min-max completely I would have taken mainly half elves as they have the highest attributes. The trolls still make the best warriors though. Too bad the ogre can't be a knight, it would have been fun!

Females have 2 points less in strength but 1 point more in both intuition and charm

Character creation sure took me a long time! But now we're finally set to start our adventure!

Setting Out

Ok now that our prty is ready let's begin the adventure!

Let's choose the party

8wM2r.jpg

And let's go!! Or not...

Wq1BZ.jpg

So we start next to a big city

sCrP0.jpg

But first let's take a look at the skills available

u6oHB.jpg

WNn0m.jpg

We start with 1000 experience points to assign, let's raise the basics

0UfNn.jpg

What about raising a statitic?

LXQfT.jpg

Too expensive and in the beginning it's raising skills that makes a huge difference in power. My aim will be to first raise the offensive capabilities of the disciples. Especially the monk as he is going to be stun-locking all the tough monsters in the early game

Let's not forget to equip our stuff

Ud22J.jpg

As you can see the armor is divided by locations. The max armor is defined by your armor skill. So you need to raise your armor skill to better take advantage of your equipment

Item info

b1JOu.jpg

WK stands for weapon quality, it makes a massive difference to it's performance. you technically would prefer to have an axe of good quality instead of a shoddy axe +50

Our knight has the highest armor skill

Does't seem to be a bad game. I need more data though, so I'll wait for future updates.

A Glorious Beginning

So What do we do first? Go look for weapon shops :)

3Mawx.jpg

This is a nice shop

yqss4.jpg

Let's go see something less fancy

AlsoC.jpg

Is being adequate at the steal skill enough?

IRpUA.jpg

Apparently not...

tHEzJ.jpg

To be fair the guards didn't appear immediately, I had to walk around town for a bit. So it is actually possible to run away before the guards see you I guess... a long shot from other games whes you're arrested on the spot!

We beg for mercy...

24YxQ.jpg

Seems like we don't speak the same language...

Well after that I reload, raise my skills and proceed to steal from this shabby shop

U2Cbr.jpg

yFtEi.jpg

dJWKl.jpg

08ycZ.jpg

So the idea is now to steal enough items and resell them to be able to afford the best weapons. Only it takes a bit too much time so let's go buy a boat instead!

Sponsoring the guild...

While we're at it why not steal from the temple

Hey! What do they mean by that! We are a respectable guild trying to save the world here!

I guess I'll try to hunt for that Ogre early on the game. When my monk reaches about 250 - 300 in open hand I should be able to take him on I think.

Thanks! I looked at your Tower of Myraglen LP for inspiration :)

I'm hoping to keep the game fairly updated, but I will realistically be able to update on the weekends mainly.

Though the guards here are quite bloodthirsty... your punishment for stealing is summary execution on the street? Sounds like Saudi Arabia...

I seem to remember there was a way to get in prison. I need to check on that.

Baby Steps

So let's get started on our mission! After all we're here to make a living save the world!

So first let's meet the local lord

mf2Y5.jpg

OK, our first mission is to find a survivor of the previous war who supposedly should be in Teal the capital of a pirate nation. Well the only city of this glorious nation...

We need to go there by boat...

3WopG.jpg
I should have become a businessman... I already have a private boat!

NLvqG.jpg

Sightseeing in Teal

FQFDW.jpg

Ah! ah! Our war hero was living in one of these nondescript houses

C3N3A.jpg

Success!

FHKMz.jpg

So our next mission is to go to Teal again and pay tribute to the pirate king

N8C3d.jpg

He looks exactly as we imagined he would!

QgKYe.jpg

Killing 2 birds with one stone

IDYdh.jpg

Our next mission: clear up a tower infested with vermin

dp34u.jpg

But first let's check the next mission with Krassius

ctlHs.jpg

So the mission is to go kill the leader of a band of raiding orcs who's in an outpost near Lone mountain. Sounds fun!

But first let's go clear the tower in Teal

bgja4.jpg

It should get us ready for the outpost mission, right?

sMt4R.jpg

The pointman is the one who's supposed to find secret doors and traps. Needs the perception skill

I50dT.jpg

Bats...

wbrCk.jpg

Our first fighting mission... ominous

vQ1HG.jpg

r8BIG.jpg

i4xKJ.jpg

Text appears before the image

d16dq.jpg

These are the scary ones

Fkz5c.jpg

They look very different from their smaller cousins...

e8gwR.jpg

Well couldn't win the fight without getting one of my mages killed... so let's abort this mission and try the outpost instead... Exciting isn't it?

Raiding the Raiders

You thought I would leave you only with this last update? I'm not that cruel ;)

So this is where Lone Mountain is, the outpost should be near

peBka.jpg

This place looks like it

uVRTU.jpg

Yep sounds about right let's get in

USaq2.jpg

First fight, with our mage in action!

C3eE7.jpg

Our priest got injured

IA44y.jpg

This game has a detailed damage system. The first thing to do after fighting it to make sure to treat the bleeding. The priest's injury on the other hand is requires a higher priest spell to heal which I don't have at the moment. We'll have to drop at the temple next time we're in the city.

This is what the auto-map looks like, it can't be zoomed

ymkPa.jpg

Interesting

CQH5Z.jpg

oh?

VjmRq.jpg

Our monk in action

C7uBW.jpg

Oowem.jpg
Wooo!

uqTI4.jpg
Why does he makes these weird noises... I can't hear my lovely axe at work!

Tojpa.jpg
Hey keep it low... He must have had a weird upbringing at that temple!

Sorry to disturb you guys!

dVAnA.jpg

Oh oh, they have a strong leader... wait is that our leader?

RjZ11.jpg

That is a tough battle, let's blast them with magic!

c3i1Z.jpg

Didn't kill them but it hurts, it's a linear damage spell

zherv.jpg

Our warrior in action... merciless

OUuCu.jpg

This is for the wolfwarrior

o2OgZ.jpg

It killed him...

Qmwqh.jpg
Behold my magic!

m2OtD.jpg
yeah yeah...

Qmwqh.jpg
jealous? :smug:

m2OtD.jpg
shut up!

Our priest in action

h62dr.jpg

G29CJ.jpg
when preaching doesn't work... Smiting bloody does!

Orv8v.jpg

m2OtD.jpg
The priest's got a point...

One important option in combat

h2yAk.jpg

The interesting part of this system is that hitting someone doesn't take move points. You have a set number of attacks depending on your weapon skill. The move points are used for all other actions like opening a door, trying to stop your bleeding. Interestingly enough. equipping items doesn't cost any points...
Aim takes al of your remaining points, the more move points you have the better your aim. It is a critical skill as it boosts your chance to hit and allows you to target enemies that would otherwise be too strong for your team. It is especially critical for the monk as it gives him a better chance to stun the enemy and then finishing him off.

The inevitable consequence

ogjla.jpg

EZkyX.jpg

Let's raise our skills

EGmY0.jpg

The monk has has the cheapest requirements to increase his open hand skills, so he will always be the character to dictate which enemies we can tackle. Some monster are really strong against melee but weak against magic like the wolfwarrio. But a lot of other monsters are resistant to both hence the monk being my only chance to win (at least at low to mid level gaming)

Hmm...

rm31w.jpg

We'll avenge you!

zHxTh.jpg

Other enemies

6E3WY.jpg

So they have to hide the food from the troops...

5TmyX.jpg

We found stairs leading down...

Hacfm.jpg

... and others leading up

Gv6Nr.jpg

So logically the leader should be at the top level... but first let's finish exploring this level. I need to have everything perfectly mapped after all :)

Oh what's this another secret door? Ah! ah!

7BAA8.jpg

So the leader is a hill giant

WkX5L.jpg

Our ranger in action

UBT7Y.jpg

wiRBE.jpg
*holds his breath*

3WopG.jpg
So professional... I'm glad he's on my side!

But it's our monk that will single-handedly finish the giant

wQCiF.jpg

Turns out that the leader was on the first level after all...

I remember that part since at the time, it took me some time to find the secret door. This time I bumped into it by chance. I actually kept bumping into secret doors during this whole mission. I used to be precise in my movements back then because of my DM experience where hitting a wall hurts you. So my movements were very precise. I realise now that I've grown a bit sloppy since then and I do hit the walls regularly but in this game it's an advantage!

Anyway let's quickly explore the lower level

Hacfm.jpg

There's not much of interest here apart from our cheeky friend here

vfzGY.jpg

There is also a section of corridors and secret doors that reads 'DEATH' on the auto-map and evidently enough:

eIqkb.jpg

We find this creature

ALXR1.jpg

0KQ0m.jpg

I's highly resistant to magic and quite tough. The only character who can damage it and thus stun it is my monk. So I can kill now if I want. But it doesn't hold any interesting loot and I'm not sure if it's quest related...
I'll leave it for now and maybe come back kill it later. I suppose I could also kill it and keep it's remains. But I'll leave it for now. Any suggestions about this?

We can now explore the second floor

Gv6Nr.jpg

It's a small area and we find...

scclU.jpg

And that was the decoy... The first time I played the game I killed this guy and went back to Farnus to be told that that wasn't what they expected. So I came back bumped into every single wall until I found the real leader I just killed above

And indeed

3E58W.jpg

This is the next mission

ca8Hi.jpg

But we'll leave it for later

Some notes about the system. I noticed that characters slowly regenerate as you walk. And funnily enough HP regenerates faster than MP. So it makes it hard to level mage type characters(experience is not divided evenly among party members) unless you have MP potions and others. I could of course rest after every single encounter to replenish MPs. But for some reason it doesn't fit with the spirit of the game. Don't get me wrong I used to rest after every single encounter in the gold box series. But here it just doesn't fit. So to come back to mages, because the experience is not divided by team members but allocated depending on their actions, I have been slowly raising their combat skills (it costs a lot of experience points) so that they can manage a bit. Then I'll just send them on their own on a training mission. This lead to this conversation:

m2OtD.jpg
I don't get it why do we need to improve our fighting skills before focusing on magic?! I just want to have fun with my illusions!

Oowem.jpg
Well we are called the disciples of steel after all...

Tojpa.jpg
oh yeah? and where is your steel then?

Oowem.jpg
in my fist!

3WopG.jpg
We should be called the disciples of steal...

m2OtD.jpg
That's not fun!

3WopG.jpg
I can get you a whip if you prefer...

G29CJ.jpg
that would be fun!

Oowem.jpg
It handles similarly to your scimitar... (whip are part of the edged skill)

m2OtD.jpg
You would like that you dirty little gnome, wouldn't you?

wiRBE.jpg
I'm really with a bunch of sick people and they say that *I* look dodgy...

This game has one of the better turn-based combat systems out of all the old RPGs. I remember monks being pretty overpowered though. It's a good job you have one in your party.

There doesn't seem to be too much interest in this LP, though I'm sure a lot of it is down to you not having found your style yet. You need to pace the little character driven interludes better instead of just dumping one at the end. You also need to express their personalities more if you're going to persist with them. The whole LP is a little disjointed and quite hard to follow. The screenshots are okay (though there could be slightly more of them), it's just the captions that are lacking in consistency. You need to guide the LP more with the text. Anyway...

Just kill it. Afair, it's not quest related, just tough encounter.
