Take no counsel of your fear, chaps. The risk, at this time, in this place, is small. If it turns out to be bad and Anthony lie bleeding on the ground, watching the rosy finger of dawn starts touching his cheek... Well, Lady Luck truly analfuck us with a ivory big dong this time.

Or perhaps he could simply grow up and realize that pointless bravado out of some desire to prove masculinity is a personality trait befitting an immature child and not the Baron of Whitehall. If there's one thing Sommers ought to have realized in his 70-odd years of undeath, it's the fact that Camarilla politics are far more lethal than combat. Why in the world do you believe bashing some shovelheads will boost Sommers' self-esteem when he just finished incinerating Sculptor Angelos? He actually made such a ridiculous display of balls the rest of the London Camarilla were genuinely scared, and now rather hate him for it. If he's so blind to his own situation that he doesn't understand that a coward and a failure couldn't have done that, then a few shovelheads won't save him.

To be fair, this is not the same thing. Anthony pushing a button and making the Sculptor go boom isn't the same thing as being involved in a tooth-and-nail battle to the death against a powerful opponent. There is no immediate danger in what Anthony did, no sense of visceral thrill and adrenaline that you can only get when you're involved in a physical struggle/confrontation. Doing what Anthony did carried no risk, and thus required no courage. Oh sure, the plan to kill Angelos itself was risky, but the act of killing him merely amounted to Anthony giving the signal to incinerate the dude. Other than getting shot at by Donnie (which I don't think counts, because it was planned and controlled, thus, not risky), Anthony was never in any real personal danger during the entire course of the assassination. There's something pure, honest and primal about violence that even the most lethal Camarilla court intrigues simply can't match.

What makes Anthony insecure is the fact that he is not courageous. Whether or not he should understand that he isn't a coward or failure is irrelevant - he feels this way, it's a problem for him and it upsets him greatly. He doesn't expect or even desire to be a badass like his pal Eddie, but he does at the very least want to be able to keep his composure in the face of danger.

As far as our combat skills, well, remember back in Wild Nights when Anthony trained with Eddie? When Tony fought the Brujah antitribu, his gun was waterlogged. If Anthony has a good piece with lots of stopping power, I could see him being somewhat effective in taking out these shovelheads. We can soften them up with bullets, while Cripps and Vogler can tear them up if they get too close.

I'm not misrepresenting anything - had he failed and Angelos had escaped with the eldritch horror not only would the Camarilla be shipping him a complementary bottle of sunblock, he'd have a very angry and very powerful Tzimisce with a vested interest in ensuring he got plenty of use out of it - if he didn't turn him into a new footstool. This would be enough to reduce most people to a nervous wreck if they could even push the plan to that point to begin with. Sommers didn't even blink.

This is not a difficult concept to grasp, so I can only hope it doesn't elude Sommers - of all the innumerable ways to die, combat's only noteworthy quality is the ease with which one sees it coming.

Was Vogler part of the SS and still human back in the day or was he there just "to watch"?
Its kinda ambiguously written, all Dicksmoker-like...

"I was there to watch, however, not to take part. Unfortunately, fires were lit, and...well, things got a little out of hand. A considerable number of Kine died. I ran, into the mountains."

I figure he was already a vampire and not part of the SS, just there to watch from a distance. Cant be a vamipre and part of the SS, wont work.
Cant frenzy from fire either (well, not if its not on your face), only rötschreck and then run if you fail your courage rolls, all of them...
Must have pretty low humanity or willpower to get some animal features too...
Am I powergaming too much here? Yes, I am.

Still, was Vogler SS and high gen as we are or is that for us to find out?

Myeah. A soldier who only fights at night is a bit of a stretch. Plus, I think the event itself took place during the day. I don't know what exactly he watched.

Ehh, well, he's meant to be implying that he was monitoring the Bulge as a Camarilla observer, and even if he's lying about exactly how it all went down, we can pretty much assume he was not some sort of bizarre Nazi vampire, but then I read that chapter back and realised I gave him a line about being on opposite sides to Sommers, which does make it sound like he was a soldier. Shittily ambiguous indeed.

Good to know, I was definitely assuming Nazi vampire - Sommers was one of several Allied vampires, after all, so it didn't seem out of keeping with the world as established.

I'm actually slightly disappointed. The way I read it, Vogler was some badass SS recon-type when he was Embraced, then shortly after he frenzied during the Malmedy massacre. However, it makes more sense that he is significantly older if he is making a run for Prince - having a Prince who has been Embraced only ~70 years ago is highly unusual, to say the least.

Anyways, grotsnik: Does Tony have a gun on him at the moment? Or is he unarmed? If he has a decent piece on him, I could be tempted to move to A if we have something decent to back our bros up with. If we have a good weapon, taking these idiots down could be a source of bro bonding with Vogler and he might be more willing to reveal what really happened at Malmedy, as I am pretty sure that he was lying about something.

However, if we don't have any kind of decent weapon, then it's simply not worth it to go after them and I will stick with C.

Now that you mention it, there has been a distinct lack of any tolling of bells in this LP.

Man got money and contact to buy something great, elegant, lots of stopping power, concealable, piece. Plus he still favour his swordstick, so I am imagining some oneshot silver-and-wood-bullet custom design piece like fucking this
    [IMG]
    http://www.theblaze.com/stories/heres-the-worlds-smallest-45-concealed-carry-pistol/
Silver and wood bullet, great sphranel, good against both Kindred and Kine. Sufficient for one target only because what would you think fighting outnumber? I amthinking silvercoat, but it is too flashy and therefore defeat the purpose of concealed fatal surprise.

While a Waffen SS vampire sounds cool, it's a reasonable assumption that the soldiers left behind at Malmedy to guard prisoners were not exactly the best of the 1st SS. And I doubt they were members of the recon units.

Heh, strange as it may seem, the update I was planning to write after Kirkbeck's death was going to have the Nosferatu of the city paying tribute to the city's Prince by scrambling up the towers of London's churches and sounding the bells.

He has his sword-stick and a revolver. Nothing heavy-duty.

    He returns!

It appears we've got a tie.

Well, here's my last attempt to induce a flip-flop. Right now, the stakes are too high to go around drawing attention to ourselves by attacking some idiot shovelheads. Mandrake is watching us, and the last thing I want here is for him to get footage of Anthony and two other men murdering a bunch of kids in hoodies on a video camera. There is a Hunter threat within London, and the last thing we need to be doing is getting involved in a battle in the middle of the street. We've already killed two shovelheads on our property, but if a fight spills onto the streets it might result in a Masquerade violation - precisely the sort of thing we don't need right now.

Worse yet, it's somewhat close to dawn. This is why it's a problem, other than the obvious "we'll burst into flames" bit:

Why is this a problem other than the obvious? Because Highgate Cemetary is the location of our bolt-hole:

If these "shovelheads"* turn our to be more game than we've expected, this battle might drag out for a long time. If we have have few precious minutes to spare to get back to the safety of our haven, we'll have to come back in through the secret tunnel. Which means that Vogler, and more importantly, Mr Cripps will also have to go through the tunnel as well. Which means that Cripps will know all about our secret entrance during a time of intense political conflict where we have a lot of rivals who want to rub us out. You think that he's going to keep his fucking mouth shut? Fuck no, in all likelihood, he'll sell that info to the highest bidder and then our escape route will become a death trap in the event of an attack.

Courage and character development are great, but they'll do us no good if we are attacked in our home, then as we head out of our bolt-hole thinking we're home free, we are ambushed by a swarm of Hunters/Sabbat/Turcov/Scotland Yard/The Vase/Jews who knew where to wait for us because somebody sold us out. Courage and balls are great assets and they can go a long way to making Anthony self-reliant and versatile in his skill set**; but we're in politics - this is a smart man's game, not a tough man's game. We get swarmed by a bunch of angry individuals outside our escape route, and we're still just as dead, brave or not.

It doesn't matter how brave Anthony is if his bolthole is compromised. Donnie is the bravest individual we've met - look how it worked out for him.

    * By the way, we don't even know whether these Sabbat are all typical Sabbat idiot shovelheads. Just because Vogler referred to them as shovelheads doesn't mean that they are - it's pure conjecture. Sure, the two vampires Vogler and Cripps killed were easy prey, but that doesn't mean that the vampires calling us out are too. They could simply be bait to draw us out. While I think that this is probably not a dangerous ambush, I believe that there is too much at stake here to go around scrapping with some shovelheads. We've got bigger fish to fry. Besides, why should we trust Vogler? He's clearly an antitribu anyways.

** For the record, while Anthony's strong suit will always be politics, I think it's very much possible for him to become a competent fighter. He's never going to be like Eddie or Mr Cripps, but I certainly think he could become a more well-rounded individual who can kick some ass in the future. I mean, look at Vogler; the guy started off as your typical Gangrel hunter type, but we've seen that he's also seen that he's very clever based on the meeting with the Archon.

That being said, while it would be nice for Anthony to have a broader skill set, now is the time to keep our nose clean. I am not as against A as ironyuri because I think it is in-character (Anthony wants to be brave, and he wants a chance to prove himself) but I don't want to take chances at a time like this. And the risk of revealing our escape route is too much.

Those are all good points, but if not now, then when? Do we wait for an opportunity to be courageous? That seems kind of counter-intuitive, all such opportunities will be as risky, if not more, as this one. It's possible that by doing this, we'll have a better insight into this Vogler character, should he deem us best buds and righteous dudes.

It's not like scheming all the time worked out well for us back in act 1 (I do believe Eames fucked us over?) and we're already in deep shit with Turcov regardless.

Which reminds me, why exactly why are we in deep shit with him? I don't remember what's his grudge.

His grudge is that this city isn't big enough for two savvy kine-knowledgeable Ventrue. Also, I assume he wishes to wash the dirt of having allied himself with Earnes off, but getting rid of the only other Ventrue who knew his position. Also, he told us his plans to reintegrate the Anarchs with some kind of kindred parliament or some shit, and he probably hopes we don't remember that he's a dangerous liberal who is in the pocket of the Zionist methuselahs.

Sometimes in life you just need to throw caution and concern and risk analysis to the wind and kick some ass. That is what bravery is. Being a Ventrue doesn't have to mean being a pussy, they once were knights and barons and warriors who lead from the front, sharing in the glory and respect of their loyal men.

You make many good points Esquilax but I simply feel this is a vital moment that will turn Anthony around into a more well-rounded and dignified man. I don't think we can wait forever to do this. Too long and Anthony will become too set in his ways and perhaps even begin to rationalise his cowardice. It's a hidden gift that Anthony recognises and wishes to confront his fear. People obey the Ventrue in the Modern Nights, but fuck all respect them any more and justly so. Anthony could become a man who actually deserves respect.

This is frankly as safe and controlled an attempt to improve your Anthony as you can get: You outnumber them: 3 to 2; you got backup: your personal security personel Cribbs and your highly-dependant-political-ally Vogler; you got the location: in the neighbourhood of your main base.

This chance is even better than the burning house in several weeks ago.

If you bow out of this chance, you have absolutely no chance, no ability, no drive to improve your own character. Dont speak again of improving it because you yourself are too scared to do so.
