Thanks so much for this thread. Looks like I'll have to figure out how to on my Windows 8 laptop get Win98SE on VirtualPC2007 working on my Windows 8 laptop. Got it working on Comp mode already but couldn't install the patches.

i10mage002.jpg

i10mage003.jpg

i10mage004.jpg

i10mage005.jpg

i10mage006.jpg

First, the Wasteland planet. We may be able top interrupt their base construction before it is finished.

i10mage008.jpg

So we have lost two squads of Ultramarines so far. 2nd and 3rd Squads have consolidated into one experienced unit, and the rest of the Tactical Marines are but rookies. Fortunately, we have three squads of Tacticals left, and the rest of the Company filled besides the Librarian.

i10mage010.jpg

Brother Garfunkel was demoted after his friendly fire incident last mission. Former Tactical Marine Oscar replaces him.

i10mage011.jpg

Along with Brother Yeesh, who steps into the vacancy left by the heroic Storyfag.

Two Ultramarines from the less-experienced Tactical squads are given a Chainsword and Bolt Pistol, bringing Hellraiser's squad back to full strength:
i10mage012.jpg

i10mage013.jpg

And we deploy.
i10mage014.jpg

We start with good position along the ridge of a hill.

i10mage015.jpg

In the distance, a squad of Terminators plods towards us.

i10mage016.jpg

i10mage017.jpg

And at least two Daemons stare at us without moving.

i10mage018.jpg

The Assault unit flanks to the right

i10mage019.jpg

And pops smoke.

i10mage020.jpg

The first few shots from our long range units miss their marks.

i10mage021.jpg

Cue Terminator Jack, Assault Cannon in fist.

i10mage022.jpg

Assault Cannon vs Chaos Terminators...

i10mage023.jpg

2 - 0.

i10mage025.jpg

The rest of the enemy Terminator squad is easy to break. But then a squad of regular Traitor Marines appears. No doubt at least one lugs is lugging a machine gun.

i10mage026.jpg

Oscar fires his heavy flamer through the gaps of the building in front of him.

i10mage027.jpg

And many a heretic burned this day.

i10mage028.jpg

Another Terminator Chain Fist, which is good, because we could use one or two more.

i10mage029.jpg

i10mage030.jpg

i10mage031.jpg

i10mage032.jpg

i10mage038.jpg

Before the next mission, the Commissar learns a new spell...

i10mage039.jpg

Fire from the depths of Hell...

i10mage040.jpg

The Arctic planet, where Chaos already has a defensive point set up.

i10mage041.jpg

One heavy weapon. Priority target.

i10mage042.jpg

Sorcerer. Priority target if it comes within small arms range.

i10mage043.jpg

The Tacticals and Terminators can't get any shot through the mess of trees, yet they are still in the open, so the Marines pop smoke.

i10mage048.jpg

On our right flank, a squad of Khorne Berzerkers smell untainted blood, and swim forward like sharks in the sea.

i10mage049.jpg

And a squad of Terminators is behind them, also itching to charge.

i10mage051.jpg

Very well. We set up in cover and wait to whittle down their charge via overwatch, and then counterattack.

i10mage044.jpg

Still, it is best to neutralize the heavy weapon as soon as possible. Assault Squad makes a daring... assault.

i10mage045.jpg

Darius manages to incinerate one foe with a krak grenade.

i10mage046.jpg

Just in case, they throw out a few smoke bombs, limiting the enemies' use of their superior firearms.

i10mage047.jpg

Then the rest of the squad drops in from above like hammers. One Traitor falls not long after to flame and axe.

i10mage050.jpg

Brother Slaughter maims one Traitor with his Reaper power axe.

i10mage052.jpg

Then he splits this one from crown to jewels.

i10mage053.jpg

After the last Word Bearer drowns in his own blood, the Assault Squad takes the opportunity to enact the latter section of the "hit-and-run" maneuver.

i10mage054.jpg

Taking cover behind this wall. For the enemy Terminators are close, only on the other side of the buildings to the east.

i10mage055.jpg

Predictably, the Berzerkers charge at the Ultramarine Terminators.

i10mage056.jpg

But sprinting in a straight line directly at a Terminator... is not a good idea.

i10mage057.jpg

Case in point.

i10mage058.jpg

The Commissar purges a Chaos Sorcerer from existence.

i10mage060.jpg

And now only three enemy Terminators stand between us and victory.

i10mage061.jpg

At this point, I order Hellraiser's squad to stick a melta bomb on one of the enemy Terminators.

i10mage062.jpg

The smoke clears, revealing a barely damaged suit of Tactical Dreadnought armor.

i10mage063.jpg

Fine, let's stick another one on him.

i10mage064.jpg

He survives the second melta bomb as well...

i10mage065.jpg

Then Sergeant Gondolin loses patience and headshots the Terminator to finish the damn mission already.

i10mage066.jpg

Oo, Melta Missiles. Waiting to see some enemy armor before I use these.

i10mage067.jpg

i10mage068.jpg

i10mage069.jpg

i10mage070.jpg

i10mage071.jpg

i10mage072.jpg

i10mage073.jpg

And the final optional mission...

i10mage074.jpg

I somehow lost or did not screencap the fight.

i10mage075.jpg

It was pretty exciting, too. But only one death (of a non-Codexer).

i10mage076.jpg

It was a fun fight. Chaos Space Marines in the canyon with at least two heavy weapons. Berzerkers charging directly at my troops. And a squad of Terminators in the rear protecting their objective.

Oh well!

i10mage077.jpg

i10mage078.jpg

i10mage079.jpg

Now...

Wait a few hours for a surprise!

- BATTLE REPORT X: LOST HEROES OF THE IMPERIUM -

m10mage001.jpg

m10mage002.jpg

m10mage003.jpg

Command really needs to know better than to recommend I use flamers.

m10mage004.jpg

Only two squads (plus HQ) are to be deployed this mission. We'll go fire-heavy with Terminators and Devastators, the Terminators versatile enough to switch to close combat mode if necessary.

m10mage005.jpg

We approach the Chaos fortress from the east. A collection of hills obstructs our view ahead of us. But as we near the natural soft barricade, we see that tunnels line the outcropping, connecting a smattering of bunkers.

m10mage006.jpg

We again must neutralize the heavy weaponry first.

m10mage007.jpg

One down.

m10mage008.jpg

But this Traitor manages a fortuitous duck beneath the window, allowing the bunker wall to block Podex's heavy flamer.

m10mage009.jpg

BURN!!!!

m10mage010.jpg

The Devastators make ready to breach through the central door.

m10mage011.jpg

The Terminators wait for the flames to die out before storming through this bunker west of the Devastators.

m10mage012.jpg

A quick auspex scan shows little expected defense in these semi-natural fortifications.

m10mage013.jpg

A small fire team splits off to enter through the bunker to the right of the main Devastator squad.

m10mage014.jpg

BURN EVERYTHING

m10mage015.jpg

One bogie.

m10mage016.jpg

Brother Slips: I've got him.

m10mage017.jpg

Brother Slips: Heretic down.

m10mage018.jpg

Now, let's pop some smoke and wait for them to investigate.

m10mage019.jpg

Blam blam blam

m10mage020.jpg

Only a few more...

m10mage021.jpg

Clear.

m10mage022.jpg

As the regular armored Marines are about finishing up, the Terminators break through their flank to the other side of the hills.

m10mage023.jpg

Weak enemies... Bunched together... Sounds like a job for a flamer!

m10mage024.jpg

Meanwhile Oscar snipes a Sorcerer with his Storm Bolter.

m10mage025.jpg

The cultists lob frag grenades at Podex and Oscar, but they do not even tickle.

m10mage026.jpg

In return, they receive more holy fire.

m10mage027.jpg

Dakka dakka dakka

m10mage029.jpg

Now, let's try to crack this nut.

m10mage028.jpg

Advancing in the tunnels, Havoc Squad runs into minor resistance.

m10mage030.jpg

Resistance easily quelled. But look! Are those Ultramarine bodies?

m10mage031.jpg

By McGragge! The lost heroes... There is a passage about them in the Codex. It is said that they - Amilus and Guglious - never once deviated from the Codex Astartes.

True Ultramarines.

m10mage032.jpg

With LOOT

m10mage033.jpg

m10mage034.jpg

Brother's, let us consult the Codex for more data:

m10mage035.jpg

Extra range, like the Purifier Hand Flamer used by the Assault Marines.

m10mage036.jpg

This will be perfect for the Commissar.

m10mage037.jpg

Another Reaper Power Axe. These things are godly (adding to your AP).

m10mage038.jpg

The tunnels finally clear, the squad sets up at the bunker facing westwards, ready to bound into the din of gunfire outside.

m10mage039.jpg

A cultists begins walking down the stairs. What is the proper response? Flame the floor and steps beneath the enemy, of course.

m10mage040.jpg

Meanwhile, Jack snipes his own Sorcerer with his assault cannon.

m10mage041.jpg

The lighter armored Marines burst out of the bunker and into cover behind the building in front of them.

m10mage042.jpg

Oscar thinks he hears movement behind him...

m10mage043.jpg

Sure enough, a sneaky and conniving Sorcerer!

m10mage044.jpg

Bad move, Chaos.

m10mage045.jpg

That's three Sorcerers killed so far, yet scanners show many more enemies to come...

m10mage046.jpg

The Devastators and Techmarine Juden reach a zone of safety within the first building.

m10mage047.jpg

Smashing Axe bashes in any heretics that approach the door.

m10mage048.jpg

But they do not stay. They continue to the next building.

m10mage049.jpg

There are four staircases to the top level. We have enough troops to spread to each staircase, in order to avoid bunching up too much in any single stairway.

m10mage050.jpg

The cheeky Word Bearers lob grenades from the second level.

m10mage051.jpg

One lands straight on top of Tech-Marine Juden's helmet. There is no trace of his body.

m10mage052.jpg

The southwest staircase is clear, breached by two Terminators.

m10mage053.jpg

The northwest one has light resistance, but nothing that Janus can't handle, using the floor itself as cover.

m10mage054.jpg

In the northeast, the enemy is standing in the doorway with guns pointed at the orifice of the stairway. Boris creeps up the steps, ready to shoot a ball of plasma at the first heretic he sees.

m10mage057.jpg

Soon, it clears, and the northeast fireteam is ready for the finishing blow.

m10mage058.jpg

One power armored heretic falls flat on his face after a smack from Smashing Axe's hammer.

m10mage059.jpg

And the Commissar finishes the last enemy using his force axe.

m10mage060.jpg

m10mage061.jpg

m10mage062.jpg

I will no longer be deploying a Techmarine unless the mission necessitates, as I only have Mac Guyvius left.

m10mage063.jpg

The Concordat! We finally have it.

m10mage064.jpg

...Or does it have us?

So, Landspeeders are really fragile in this game.

I accidentally destroyed its Heavy Flamer with my own blind grenade...

And then I forgot about that, threw another blind grenade later, and it destroyed my Landspeeder in one hit...

Update: Had the flu last week, and I got side-tracked by Divinity 2 this week. Still too lazy to write right now, but I'll get some playing done. If you're really antsy, you can catch me playing on my twitchTV channel or watch a replay.

Okay that deserves an update.

- INTERLUDE: GLORY TO THE IMPERIUM -

i11mage001.jpg
i11mage002.jpg
We may have sustained losses, but we shall Know No Fear.
i11mage003.jpg
In the heart of the swamp... It was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings.
i11mage004.jpg
A pack of Khornaites with their pet Flamer off the leash.
i11mage005.jpg
Small arms fire proves ineffective with the cover of trees adding to their armor.
i11mage006.jpg
To the north, Sergeant Hellraiser eyes a flanking group of regular Chaos Marines.
i11mage007.jpg
He does not hesitate to dive at the Chaplain. But the enemy replies in kind, grinding back with his crozius.
i11mage013.jpg
Before the Chaplain can fall, more birds of prey strike from the skies. With only combat knives, the Traitors eat every chain-blade swing.
i11mage012.jpg
Death to all who oppose the Imperium.
i11mage008.jpg
The rest of the unengaged enemy charge.
i11mage009.jpg
Another Chaplain bursts from the trees and joins the assault.
i11mage010.jpg
Hopefully, they charge down the center, and the Tactical squads on each flank can clamp down its jaws on their rotten throats.
i11mage011.jpg
Hellfire erupts from 'neath the Khornaites' stride. The Emperor's light is blinding.
i11mage014.jpg
But perhaps the Commissar and Apothecary Orange have played too well the part of bait...
i11mage015.jpg
Apothecary Orange stares down the hafts of two chain-axes.
i11mage016.jpg
He does not see the third chain-axe.
i11mage017.jpg
The Commissar survives, but for how much longer?
i11mage018.jpg
The melee in the north continues.
i11mage019.jpg
And in the east, pockets of brimstone-smelling flame continue to spike into the sky.
i11mage020.jpg
A stray ball of fire strikes Sergeant Gondolin square.
i11mage021.jpg
It explodes like a pressure cooker.
i11mage022.jpg
Hellraiser Squad is exceptionally slow today...
i11mage023.jpg
...
i11mage024.jpg
...
i11mage025.jpg
And then Brother Ungern falls to a knife in the leg
i11mage026.jpg
Hellfire erupts within Hellraiser's soul. He will end this battle himself, on his own terms.
i11mage027.jpg
Back to the warp with you, Beast.
i11mage028.jpg
The current state of the combat.
i11mage029.jpg
Gondolin manages to roll from the flames, only lightly charred and crispy on the outside.
i11mage030.jpg
The Commissar, odds against his favor, grins a deathly grin. It is unseen beneath his helm, fortunate for the reader.
i11mage031.jpg
BURN!
i11mage032.jpg
And that was that. Plasma grenades, anyone?
i11mage033.jpg
i11mage034.jpg
i11mage035.jpg
i11mage036.jpg
i11mage037.jpg

Sadly (a) I got bored, and (b) my hard drive got fried that had the savegames.

But I probably wouldn't have finished anyway :p

What I've learned from doing an LP (of a tactical combat heavy game) is:
(A) Skip the optional stuff, or just don't talk about it. For this game maybe just skip optional stuff because it's boring as shit.
(B) Less play-by-play, it's tedious to write up. Need to figure out a way to easily show macro-level decisions. MSPaint to the rescue, maybe. It was cool reading the play-by-plays in the XCOM LPs but it's just too much tedium for me.
(C) I should probably read some AARs to find a better method of reporting battles in strategic/tactical games.

I might still replay this, as I never finished, and do a simpler LP.

and in cold future will be back :yeah:
Looking forward to it. :salute:
Can you tell me what were your favorite entertaining segments, or screenshots?

This will be coming back soon... I still have to play JA2 but Silent Storm is pissing me off and my backlog is gone after that, waiting for Warmachine Tactics to be released. Re-installing VirtualPC07 right now anyway.
