Betrayal of krondor seems to have a user friendly UI, should i give it a try too?

I find the UI for BaK to be somewhat fiddly.

It's still fine, but it is missing some modern touches.

Hi everyone.

I've been away from crpgs for a while, but that itch is returning. Not knowing what is available anymore, I am asking for suggestions.

I liked Summoner 1 and 2, Legend of Legaia 2, and Skies of Arcadia. I also liked Asheron's Call when it first came out.

I like a generally fun story (Summoner 1 was a bit dark for me, but the rest of it was great), the ability to build characters in different ways and still be functional, little mini-games (I liked discovering the recipes and combat moves in Legaia), and lots of varied environments. The story itself does matter to me - I like feeling I've just played through a novel.

I'm not too critical of graphics but 8-bit is probably not enough anymore, unless the story is so engrossing that graphics just don't matter.

Thanks for any help.
Give Fallout: New Vegas a shot. It has everything you're asking for. Well maybe not varied environments, but everything else. The one spot it might be hard to get into is that it's much more open-ended than the games you've mentioned (that I've played at least). So you might experience being overwhelmed or lost and not sure where to go or what to do. Just fight through that.

I haven't played Kingpin, but I seriously do have to agree about Deus Ex : IW ; that'd teach anyone never to trust the Internet Buzz, since it's actually a very decent game on its own.

What about the darksun ui comment? Darksun ui is probably the best ui in any rpg ever.

Deus Ex: IW's story was not bad, but I remember feeling so constrained while playing that game and this sense of disappointment. I gave up about 5 or 6 hours in.

Has anyone mentioned Superhero League of Hoboken yet? I just fired up that game last night and man, that game's AWESOME! The voiced version has some great slightly campy voice acting that fits the overall theme of the game :D

I've played it some time, pretty nice game I must say.
It have nice start - out character (nameless, duh) is beaten up in some dark alley by goombas goons from local kingpin (R), we only got iron pipe (most useless weapon in FPS history) and tried to find some cash.
Most memoriable moment is when you need to sneak to some warehouse. Sound of footbal/soccer in the radio, cigars smoke and mad guard knocking mentioned radio.
Shortly after that we need to robe the safe case. We're not safecrackers so we need some specialist.
Despite the fact I'm not the fan of rap/hip-hop soundtrack is really nice and fit in the atmosphere (Cypress Hill "IV") but without goose vocal.
Lot of detals, nice economy system and lot of gore (similiar to Soldier of Fortune).
Also game is unplayable if you use sound card from motherboard, just crash when something explode. Somewhat ironic...

My evergreen nr. 1:
Gothic!
If you don't mind weird control, it's just great! The best atmosphere I ever experienced in a game (together with Vagrant Story for PS1)!

Wow, I didn't know there are people out there who feel the same!
DE: IW is one of my all time favourites, I enjoyed playing it very much; even as much as the first Deus Ex (different feel of course, but equally enjoyable).

I would not go as far as saying as it is good as the first Deus Ex. I remember being disappointed, but I also remember going through it not being the kind of horrible torture people kept saying it was.

Might and Magic (later ones specifically) and Ultima Underworld and Wizardry 8. My first RPG was Planescape so i never really got into the classic series. I'm talking about first person RPGs.

How do they compare to TES?

Should i play Skyrim or ditch that and buy M&M6 from GoG? Or should i replay Morrowind?

I'm reading about these games and everyone mentions stuff like open world, exploration, spells, freedom, etc etc.

Well Skyrim has got all that.

What does it lack that the other games have? (besides hardcore skills and stats and all that). I mean in terms of things you can do and see. Or is it all about stuff like atmosphere, character, challenge, variety?

Just curious if i should bother playing these classics or not. Old tech and dated controls or graphics don't bother me.

I'm currently playing Olbivion (never did before because of complaints) and its fun. I'm exploring, looting, killing monsters, doing quests, making potions. Why should i buy Might and Magic 6?

Yes i'm clueless.

Morrowind has much to offer for mage; Levitation, Illusion School of Magic and Spellmaker not to mention 2 guilds with not retarted story where non mages can't advance. Rouges and Warrior part was bland to be honest no special attacks and combat talent although not retarted Guilds part apply there as well. IF I were you I would play Morrowind first than Skyrim and skip Oblibion ITZ the worst part of TES.

RPG with isometric graphics that requires to use your brain, i.e. not just an action game like Diablo. It may be old or new, it doesn't matter. The only RPG's i've ever played are Dungeon Siege, Diablo 2 and Skyrim. Didn't like any of those much. I think i'll get Icewind Dale or Fallout 2 but i would like to check some other games first.

In the long run, there are very few games of any genre that stay with me as memorable experiences. The most important out of any genre for me has been Chrono Trigger, by an immeasurable amount. Gothic 2 sits evenly in the gap between Chrono Trigger and most everything else, with Cyberia receiving special designation.

Chrono Trigger
Gothic 2
Gothic
Fallout
Fallout 2
Outcast
Cyberia - yes
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape Torment - didn't finish
Fable w/ Lost Chapters
Jagged Alliance 2 - haven't finished
Morrowind/Bloodmoon

Chrono Trigger is one of the games that is immensely better if you play it when you are young. It's even better if you didn't played any other game of the genre because they all copied that game and you will get used to all the usual tropes and plot designs which would make them lose their charm on your playthrough of CT.

Hello! I'm relatively new to classic RPGs (tried Planescape, Fallout 1-2, Arcanum, Vampire: Bloodlines over the past few months) and have plenty of experience with 'modern RPGs' (New Vegas, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1-3, Dragon's Age 1-2, The Witcher 1, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim). I've found modern RPGs too easy/casual/consolized compared to older games so I've been starting playing older games.

What games should I try? I've seen the sticky thread but I want a more personalized recommendation. Something more about choices and dialogue (like Planescape) and less action hack-n-slash (Diablo, Baldur's Gate). Action can be in the game as long as it isn't the entire game's focus.

By the way I visited the other website RPGWatch but didn't stick for more than 2 mins since most of the users seem to be there for MMORPGs, JRPGs (I like some like FF7 but not a huge fan overall), console exclusives, etc. This website is more about real RPGs.

You know I'm not the biggest fan of RPGWatch but this isn't really true. In fact, RPGWatch doesn't even have a JRPG discussion forum - we do.

The usual criticism of the Watch is that they're passive-aggressive, a bit out of touch, and not nasty enough towards "The Decline". If there's anything they really like over there it's European CRPGs.

in other words, sup drog
