yeah I know I know... Another guy looking for recommendation, but honestly I dont know a better place to ask(and checked various threads in here)

I used to play dungeons and dragons online... a lot. It was closest thing to perfection for me... That is till they introduced epic lvles. Played rogue and cc bard.
More or less Im looking for a game in which there is a role to fulfill for each party member. Quest driven. Number of those should need certain party setup.
Im tired of stuff like everyone being self healing dps machine. No need for healer, cc(why bother, everyone dies within few secs), trapper...

Few others I played and i think that should be mentioned:
- path of exile: loved playing with various builds, dont like diablo like games and the fact that its more solo game... in which it just happens that few solo players team up from time to time
- gw2: no idea whats in it... Had high hopes for organised end game... which turned up to be chaos with 100 players gang banging a dragon. //playing a chick with just a shirt and 2 pieces of glass instead of daggers was certainly a good thing though
- tibia: was young, still got nostalgia after graphics
- neverwinter online: played, didnt like. Was some time ago and dont rly remember why. I think that everyone was just soloing and I didnt reach endgame.

For those that played ddo:
Lord of Blades raid is best designed quest/raid I've seen. Could use more work for a thief though.

I hope that there is a game for me somewhere... and someone in here have seen it

I just spent 2 weeks playing SWTOR, quitting now.

If you are a complete storyfag, lore completionist, and you love leveling alts through class specific story and missions, I highly recommend SWTOR. Otherwise don't bother.

I'm installing Wildstar now, hoping for a more combat-centric and better itemized game. *fingers crossed*

Whatever you do don't go back to WoW, it's become a P2W trap that's imploding on itself, subs are leaving in droves.

Sadly I don't think you'll find anything like that. Probably the closest thing to DDO is Guild Wars 1 and that's putting it loosely mainly based on the grounds of both being instance and lobby-based games. Not to mention GW1 is pretty much dead at this point, but you can still solo with heroes. It also requires you to buy the game, though. As mentioned above TOR and Wildstar are free so you can at least dabble in them, but I'd also recommend giving RIFT a try if you want rather familiar TAB-based style of MMORPG. TERA also supposedly has decent F2P model if you plan to stick around, but it has HORRENDOUS WEEB COMMUNITY other problems.

DDO is a unique beast in the mmo market and I don't think there's anything similar out there, especially in the way they did quests (as mini-dungeons). You can try the mentioned mmo's but don't expect to have experience similar to DDO. I've had more fun with Dark Souls 1/2 multiplayer shenanigans than with any mmo lately.

although I'm not well versed myself I may misunderstand the criteria because presumably most mmos are designed around specific class abilities and thus roles

for which reason I might tentatively suggest Aion, it has a lot of 'quests' if that same can apply to instances, and in those players definitely want persons to fulfil very specific roles. I know this as someone who played for a year or more and I enjoyed the game even though I could not really bring myself to the night instance runs that were more or less necessary so as to acquire sufficient points for itemisation

and although it is not an mmo in the traditional sense, NWN2 is probably still active with various realms, and these can be quite good because of the 100-400 players that adequately populate these places (enough to promote random encounters and also typically constant players so that you are not apparently isolated on a non-active server). Many of these places also presumably shares similar lore and settings to Dungeons and Dragons online. However there probably isn't the same focus on character roles in groups besides mainly those who are healers. On a related point, I always remember a Bard I once see join a very large group in the original NWN, and to this day they were one of the most versatile players I've ever watched in NWN or NWN 2.

yes I had the same impression when I first started playing, and which is true that there is no personal character progression, however, itemisation or how items are upgraded can make a significant difference between playstyles, even within character classes. As with which stigmas (skills) a player chooses to utilise at any given time

I should have mentioned it is a really good idea to check the forums to see which servers are now active at this time, as it has been out for a while and endured many issues along the way, but even after all this time there are still communities, albeit long standing communities. The game's apex was probably in the first two or three years when most players where new and you could encounter Elyos or Asmodian's throughout the lands

still, I might eventually return myself but if so I would have to also participate in the 'grind' (i.e. instance running, which should still be largely active even now), something I could previously largely avoid because of various community events and a few instances every so often to achieve approximately upper level items a few years ago. But considering how the game has been increasingly made accessible (which is not to say 'casual', rather the exacting grind for items was adjusted in many ways) I imagine there are probably much easier ways to transition into higher levels over a few weeks or so of gameplay

AFAIK, FF14 is actually the best traditional MMO on the market right now and fits what you're looking for.

if character progression is one of the essential priorities I would recommend NWN2 with online player worlds and preferably those modded with prestige classes and the like

to this day I've never really enjoyed any other rpg as much because of the specialised emphasis and yet creative possibilities which NWN2 allowed for
