This is the one where you can play as a duck, right?
Developed by the same company that did Clans, pretty much the same style of gameplay.
Got stuck in this one while playing as the duck, don't know if a bug or just my stupidity.

Anyway, I think Clans was more enjoyable, but yeah, both of them are fairly original in their style, but... well, really not good games.

A 90's sci-fi adventure game by Segasoft, pretty much set in an intergalactic airport bar. It had a peculiar gameplay element in which you could use Empathy Telepathy to relive memories of various denizens of the bar. Hilarity Ensues. It would have been great if it weren't so damned buggy.

Defender of Boston


An ollllld game, I remember playing around with this one as a child alot, A strangely indepth character creation for such an old game, if I recall it was kind of a roguelike with a lovecraftian story, I never beat it but played it a ton.

Dracula in London

Yet another old dos game, I played this one forever and a day, it was a digital board game of sorts, where players took turns, you controlled the main characters from Brom Stokers Dracula, but random events could happen, it was always randomized, so you'd be tracking the counts cargo to Carfax when suddenly you'd get an alert that Renfield had broken out and attacked a character in the night! Fun stuff.

The Last Half of Darkness

When I was a kid, I used to play this on our 286....scared the piss out of me back then, not so much now. A horror point and click adventure game. Interestingly enough the original creator is still making Last Half of Darkness games today, fully 3D, he recently released a game inspired by VTM Bloodlines, which is pretty impressive for a solo dev.

Before Starcraft there was a RTS that had 4 unique races, and the name of that game was 7th Legion, just kidding that game was shit unlike War Wind.

War Wind featured 4 races each with unique units and buildings. The gameplay was quite different to any other RTS out there, while you could build buildings and recruit units that was where all similarities ended. The game had really low amount of resources both for building buildings and weapons also recruits were every limited so you needed to be extra careful how to use them. Missions were like puzzles and often you had only one way of solving them, it would be pretty fair to say its like a combination of Commandos and Warcraft. There was also a sequel that made missions much more open and even had some c&c in the story.



HOLY SHIT! War Wind _Two_ is a game that I've been searching for since my childhood. I remember going through a lot of pages and wikis and never found it.

I'll post another obscure oldie goldie RTS.

Jurassic War (1997)

Set in mythical prehistoric times, you'll play as one of 9 tribes of 'thals, and you will fight the other 8 tribes and angry wildlife, including DINOSAURS!
The main (and only) resource in the game is MEAT. You can harvest meat by punching the shit out of wildlife.
There are buildings and vaious units you can produce with MEAT, as well as some sort of upgrades, which mostly come in form of equippable gear for your units.
Each side has access to the same basic units, plus a number of unique units (including dinosaurs) that are available to only one side.
The game possesses a rudimentary "RPG" system. Each unit you produce has a number of stats. Attacking and killing hostiles will improve these stats. You can block advancement of certain stats on every unit to produce various specialists. You can additionally augment most units with various equipment (weapons, shields, amulets, etc) that you either find in the wilderness or get from fallen enemies.
The system is surprisingly flexible. You can either play it as straight oldschool RTS and try to defeat enemies by throwing literal hordes of cheap meat at them, or you can play it as a sort of RTS-RPG party-based hybrid where you create a small-ish party of tough units that hoard all of combat exp and loot to become near-invincible fighting machines.
IIRC, the gameplay is fairly slow and meditative, as you take time leveling up your "hunting party" that supplies the base with meat, then you upgrade your base and start building up a party to smash down the enemy.
Each of 9 tribes had a separate campaign with a number of missions unique to that tribe.

Anyone played Ancient Evil, an obscure (I found only one mention of it on the Codex) Diablo clone from 1998?
I did, got stuck on some deep floor where I couldn't find a secret door. Though I think the intention was to do something more like isometric UUW.

Oh man, thanks for the nostalgia trip folks! I've gone through every single page and saw quite a few games I haven't even thought about in decades. Here's the start of my contribution, as I'm sure I'll remember more:


Imperialism
(1997)



A strategy game where you develop and expand a 19th century nation intoa superpower by managing expansion, industrialization and research. This was one of the first games I ever played on PC and still remember the deep rumbling voice of the guy saying "new technology" when you discovered things like the cotton gin or railroads.


Future Cop: L.A.P.D. (1998)



A shooter where you take control of a police mech and blow stuff up with a wide array of weapons. I especially loved the precinct assault mode where you can play against a friend or the ai known as "sky captain". You build and capture turrets as well as air and ground units, take objectives etc. That mode was a lot of fun, don't remember the story mode much.


Montezuma's Return!
(1998)



A kind of first-person Indiana Jones clone. I remember the game for the weird enemies, neat levels and fruit you used to heal yourself, which was different on every level. I remember playing this with and without a 3dfx card, and the difference was awesome to lil' old me back then.



Escape: Or Die Trying a.k.a. O.D.T. (1998)




This one had a cool cyberpunk feel to it. You had four different kinds of guns and when you collected gems their power would increase and the associated effects would change. There were also some colorful spells and enemies. I had a blast with its demo and couldn't find the full game ANYWHERE up until a few years ago.

Psycho Pinball (1995)



One of the best pinball games I've ever played. I don't know if it would appeal to me now because of the cartoon silliness, but tween me loved the varied tables and mini games very much.

Oh dear, this thread has many gems I never played before. This topic is really helpful to revisit and discover many good old classics.
What old games do you wish more people remembered and talked about?
GTA 2, SWAT 3, NOLF, Kingpin Life of Crime that come to mind. I had great time playing with these cool games. Nowadays young gamers don't even recognise them by names. It's sad to see these games getting overlooked by today's generation of gamers.
GTA 2 had some amazing features like respect levels, mission variety with lots of freedom in them, vehicles upgrades that are actually useful compared to all kinds of customization, which hardly offer any gameplay related perks other than to show off and take selfies of your cars ..meh.
SWAT 3 - Apart from the pinpoint accuracy of the enemies, the game still offers plenty of replay value. I like its simplistic approach that's easy to get into the game, and approach the situation in very open ended maps.

Real-time squad tactics game with some RPG elements from 1998 set in the War for Independence period. I don't remember if gameplay was any good, but it certainly was original.

It was this goofy first person adventure game, like the Scott Adams (?) stuff, set in space. You just flew to like half a dozen locations and talked to aliens. Graphics were probably made in MS Paint.

No, this was indie. And not some small studio like they have these days. One guy with 286 or whatever it was back then.

Imagine Space Quest 1 with bigger pixels and in first person.

Dead State Divinity: Original Sin

Challenge of the Five Realms is ridiculously difficult and not really fun. I can't recall the specifics of the combat, dialogue, interface - the only thing that stood out from memory was the insane time limit. And no, this isn't a water chip style of time limit where the game ends. No, the world is gradually engulfed by darkness and it's up to you the hero to solve this crisis. And yes, the first town you're in will disappear in time. Followed by the second town, the third and so forth. By mid game, half of the world map is gone. So you better get everything you need done or you're shit out of luck on finishing the game.

Tell me if you ever beat it blind. :)

It's not that difficult really, with the right class. If you roll a mage, get a few right spells from a shop and strictly follow the plot, it's a cakewalk. Pity, because there was obviously a lot of ambition that was cut short by strict deadlines. Faery Tale Adventure: Halls of the Dead is another game like that, although at least that one had more reliable character builds.

But the devs did warn you in a way, because the first town you were supposed to go to was the southernmost one. So after the first fail you wouldn't have to redo too many things, but got the hint that following the plot is urgent. I'm more pissed off that very early on you get the trap-revealing device, making all the thief skills pointless.

This dos blobber was just one of the many different rpgs Steve Moraff made in the late 80's and early 90's, if you can get past the textures that make your eyes want to crawl out of your head, you'll find a pretty nice, if not repetitive dungeon crawler. There were several other entries including Moraff's Revenge, and Moraff's Dungeons of the Unforgiven, a nice little time sink if you ever wanna give them a shot.

This was an old puzzle game I played off and on as a kid on my 286, it had an interesting mechanic where you could scan tiles with your wand and recast the effect on any other tile, such as changing enemies to bricks or ladders for a short period of time in order to pass, seemed simple, got maddening in later levels.



Dare 2 Dream trilogy

A trilogy of adventure games by Cliff Bleszinski, of The Palace of Deceit fame, this trilogy was released afterwards to rather bad sales. It looks like a simple point and click adventure game, rather childish, however there is some rather jarring contrast of imagery (however poorly rendered in visual basic) that is a bit darker then it would appear upon first glance, rather short and I'd say worth a look.

In case someone's trying to make sense of this screenshot: Moraff's World gave you a view from all four cardinal directions at once. You can see this if you look on the map on the left-hand side and compare it to the perspective of the dark red square (which is the player).

Moreover, if I'm not misremembering, you couldn't turn in these games. So if you were moving e.g. west, the leftmost view would be your front view.

Yeah it was kind of mind-bending if you couldn't wrap your head around what you were looking at. So many, "Oh wait, I'm not turning I'm traveling that way." moments had me running around in circles when I first played it as a kid.
