Why do even need participation awards? It's not like the button says anything about your post. If somebody rates your post as "shit", "retarded", "bad spelling" or "hopw roewur ne" at least that they read your post, gave some thought to it and gave a short reply with a button press.

Participation awards don't really mean anything and you should strive for real awards instead.

I don't know where or when participation awards started (they weren't around when I was a kid), but they've become more and more common over the past 25 years or so, at least in the U.S.

They originate in the idea that competition is mean, and hurts the kids who don't win. Since it's bad to feel bad because someone else is better than you are, you should get an award just for showing up. It's supposed to make kids with no talent feel better about themselves. If you belong to a basketball team that loses every game by 50 points, you still get a participation award.

Around here a participation award means your post is being insulted as not adding anything of value.

Whilst the participation award definitely constitutes a step in the right direction, it is nowhere close to being inclusive enough. On the contrary, it is in fact highly problematic due to its core design which most brutally excludes and alienates all those who do not participate in specific discussions. Keep in mind that not everyone can post, whether it be due to time constraints, physical and/or mental challenges or any other set of circumstances. However, this does not mean they are not equally deserving of an award. Please be mindful of this and strive to improve the situation accordingly by making the award truly inclusive of everyone.

In fact, only people who posted in this thread should be able to give participation awards. You know, 'cause only they participated.
That's not true, unless your definition of "participation" is different than it actually is. Rating posts is participation enough not only by the definition of the word but also by the events unfolded here.

Don't be an asshole.
