Kojima is like Tom Clancy on heavy drugs.
Which is precisely where the charm is.

The third one was okay, the fourth one is a disgusting ball of Hideous Kojima's diseased memetic seed though.

Like I said, the 4th was just retconning all the shit that they did in the second one. If they hadn't done the shit in the second one (i.e. everything that didn't involve Snake and that AI shit) the 4th wouldn't have been so bad.

Somewhere damp and cold.
I have to agree that the first one was definitely the best. Second one sucked monkey balls, huge ones. And ultimately dragged down the series(especially so if MGS4 is just closing up all the crap from it). I liked 3, but I played it right after 2 so maybe i'm Biased. Haven't had a chance to play 4 yet, but I will soon.

Anyway, few things to note about the MGS series.

Storyline is so incredibly stupid that it'll make your brain numb. It tries to sound complex while at the same time being so simply stupid it's like nothing i've ever seen before. But at the same time it's not meant to take itself entirely seriously. It's almost like a comic book with an outlandish story but touches upon basic principles that could be thought upon.
For example the second made you think about the possibility of the Government controlling information you receive as a way to control the masses. In of itself the concept isn't bad, it's just the execution is horrible.

Oh and the repeated explanation of the story was incredibly annoying in MGS 2. Seemed like I was getting multiple explanations every time the plot moved forward, which was a lot. And being too afraid to skip some portions of dialogue because if you skip one line you are forced to skip that entire scene didn't help things.

I'm on the 4th chapter. I liked the 3rd game the best. At least they improved the controls this time out.

Fuck yeah it had to. They did a surprisingly good job with LIQUID'S ARM!!! Especially when you consider how outlandish the thing is even in such a stoned out outlandish silly thing like MGS.

I just rented the game. Haven't played any others. I haven't gotten far (a little past meeting the arms dealer) but I'm not really enjoying it so far. The stealth sequences seem a little bland and the action seems...well, bland. I know, not much to go by. Should I keep playing? What I've read in this thread doesn't really sound encouraging.

For the record, I enjoyed stealth in these games:
Mark of Kri
Assassin's Creed
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
(can't think of any others right now)

Oh, what the hell are you talking about? They're talking about piss, and shit, and you talk about some stupid console games they don't give a fuck about.

Well, if you were to use the limited resources of your brain and examine my post, you will see that I don't like the stealth in MGS4.

There it is. So, if I don't like the stealth in that game, it might be helpful if I mentioned some games where I DID like the stealth. See? Now was that hard?

I haven't played any of them, but have heard about the ridiculously baroque story. And if I had a console, I'd definitely play it.

I also know that Gamespot basically wanked off on it while softly moaning its name and gave it a GOTY for every category it was nominated in.

:necro:

Never played Metal Gear 4, but watching a "movie" version of the game. Just wondering, why is Snake acting so oblivious to the outside world? He doesn't know anything, how the world now works, the ID controls on weapons etc etc, it's like he was born 2 minutes before the game takes place. I understand it's for the players benefits, but just wondering if there is a story explanation for this. Was he on ice or something since Metal Gear 2? Is there a book, comic or something that fill in the blanks?

MGS4 had the best mechanics by far and the best gun porn

too bad its all wasted on extremely limited gameplay sections rudely interrupted by cutscenes ever 50 meters.

Loved the first game, thought the second game was kinda ok-ish, but the third killed it for me.

No idea why the series has become so hyped. The only great entry is the first one, and the rest are average at best.

It's because there are some people who like shitty "unique" stories and those people hyped MGS and Kojima.

Dragged like fuck for me. Bullshit gay "love" story tied in there didn't help.

Well MGS3 about 5/6 hours longer than the first game. But it has much more varied set pieces than the first, along with deeper mechanics and better exploration, so IMO it's more refreshing than the other 5.

That bullshit "gay" story is meant to be comic relief, nothing to be taken serious. It's was also something Kojima made so that the fanboys could vent their frustation on Raiden (no seriously look it up).
While I am no storyfag, and was always of the opinion MGS in this regard isn't beyond anime level (despite what the Kojima cult followers say), MGS3 is very campy wich unlike the others makes the cutscenes more bearable to watch and a bit more entretaining (for me at least).

Each to their own, but MGS3 was just part of the decline to me. Can see the campy, tongue in cheek POV, but didn't sit right with me. Plus the ganeplay changes were more annoying than fun.
