Let's look at the old days.

If you are a bank or an insurance company or a telecommunications company, what would your IT infrastructure look like?
    • First, for recording all customer details and transaction details, you will need computers to store and retrieve this data.
    • Like any contigency plan for a bad situation, you need another set of computers to monitor the above and ensure there is switch to them if the above fail
    • Once the number of transactions and customer volumes increases, you need larger hardware configurations to process more
    • You need switching, routers, connectivity, firewall, and larger machines
    • And then, as everything wears and tears, you need to constantly replace these CPUs and hard drives, while worrying about hiring a staff to maintain everything.
In the old days, literally everyone needed to have their own data center.

These days? You just plug into Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, or Amazon Web Services and completely forget about IT staff and infrastructure.

You just focus on making good services for your customers, not maintaining or overhauling your IT. That means less money wasted on the IT side of business, more money to be paid out as salary for everyone else, and better customer service. It means even people with few financial resources can launch a competitive business without needing full fledged IT spending.

Same thing with online selling. As an online seller, you used to worry about having a payment portal, an online selling platform, a KYC system for checking who you are customers. Now, Amazon and eBay take care of that. You just sell on their platform and worry about good products and good customer service.

Nothing but respect for Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of World Wide Web, but I do not understand his concern that the web is now monopolized and controlled by a few corporations. Of course it is, and it is so, because it makes life easier for everyone.

Unless you get on the wrong side of one of these companies for whatever reason then you are fucked.

The West thinks the integrated Chinese system of WeChat and Alipay is a good thing. Imagine being a political dissident in China. You are fucked instantly -- the government can shut down everything at once.

Now imagine you post something Google doesn't like. They can just shut you down.

What will happen is that you will be forced to do things the old school way - have your own data center, your own domain hosting service, and so on. So you can still operate.

Which will be prohibitively expensive, but that's exactly how things were before.

That's the thing about the tech monopolies - they have reduced barriers to entry for smaller players while making medium sized players obsolete.

As long as the widest number of people benefit, what is the problem?

You see, the biggest mistake of socialists is that they think people who support free-market systems* love the rich and big corporations. Err, no. What we like, are real markets with real competition.
Those who reach the top of the economic food chain are actually the biggest danger to economic freedom that exists, because the free-market system that allowed them to rise to the top, can also topple them down if their product ever proves inferior. So, they do everything in their power to create a fake free market - which is what here in Brazil we call Metacapitalism.

So, no, this is not a good thing.

Also fuck google and all the faggots on it should have their backs broken and thrown from a tall tower to die.

*I'm not saying capitalism because fuck that word, it should die.

What you want is a competition of exclusively services and products. What you get is a competition of organizations, that give zero fucks about products and services and only care for profit.

If you're playing to win, building a better mousetrap is the wrong move- it's cheaper to build a better lie.

First, by showing that your argument is not related to your claim.

The companies you mentioned are directly competing with each other, so they don't fit an idea of a monopoly. A monopoly would mean that a company is the only provider of one or more services.

The claim that your argument supports is that it is good that there exists (at least one) company that provides a certain service, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. One is better than zero. In other words water is wet. Another claim that your argument supports is that it is good when there is a company provides multiple different services. This claim is not controversial, but the argument in its favor (convenience) is less important than quality and price of a service.

Second, that a generic argument against a monopoly applies: while having one service provider is better than having zero service providers, having two or more providers is even better, as it affects both prize and quality for the benefit of the consumer.

Third, with an example that reinforces the second point (though it's not necessary - the claim that competition is good for the consumer has more examples in its support than there are grains in the sand).
Compare the quality and price of broadband internet access in Croatia in the days of monopoly of Croatia Telecom, one is now, when there is more than one ISP. Speed has increased by orders of magnitude, while the price has halved.

Fourth, by presenting a counterexample that shows that having your services handled by a prospective monopoly (Goolag) carries the risk of abuse and even devastating financial loss:

It hurts me to see bad arguments, argued well.

This is why flat-earther's are still sometimes listened to, despite the obvious problems - some of the brightest minds are concerned more with trolling than with truth. This is a problem for everyone - the morons and less-ons of the world believe the well-argued fallacy without question. The middling masses aren't sure, and argue about it to varying degrees of salience or idiocy. The small group that remains - the damned braintrust - are either too amused by the artistic trolling, too alarmed by it and cannot see the farce, or have given all their fucks years ago and just know that we've been doomed for years and keep ticking marks off their countdown.

Wyrmlord - nice post, provocative if nothing else.

Never gonna happen. People love lies and they get swapped out on a regular basis for newer, shinier lies. Sure, people build new stuff; but they're not half as successful as they would have been if they stole someone else's stuff or convinced everyone it's crap. Look at all the anti-consumer shit apple gets away with and tell me I'm wrong. You build your better mousetrap- I'll build one that breaks twice as fast, claim it's better than yours, and sell twice as many at a cheaper cost. Then I'll buy your failing IP for pennies on the dollar and maybe make slightly better mousetraps that still break twice as fast, if I feel generous.
