raw news:

Game dropped from Steam after Gabe death threat

Indie game Paranautical Activity has been dropped from Steam after developer Mike Maulbeck threatened to kill Valve's Gabe Newell.

It seems Maulbeck (using the ill-chosen Halloween-themed name "Mike Murderbeck") was a little upset that Steam's promotional carousel referred to Paranautical Activity as being an Early Access title, shortly after it had been reclassified as a full release.

This was enough to set the developer on a Twitter rampage, labelling Steam "the most incompetent piece of f**king shit", claiming that the service is "f**king taking money out of my pocket" and "misinforming people that my game is in f**king early access".

The threat to Newell has since been deleted, but the sentiment remains:

I hope by the time my next game comes out steam doesn't have this awful fucking monopoly anymore.

Unsurprisingly, the Paranautical Activity store page now redirects to the default Steampowered.com, and Maulbeck is no longer listed as a developer.

Mike Maulbeck's Twitter threat

His reaction, predictably, is not what one would consider "calm":

Welp. PA no longer on steam. I'm done making videogames now. It sucked while it lasted.

I'm jumping back and forth between killing myself and getting a job at radio shack.

This is not the first time that there has been drama between Valve and Paranautical Activity. Last year, the first-person roguelike was submitted to the Greenlight program. Shortly after, Adult Swim offered the team a Steam publishing deal, something Maulbeck jumped at.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out as planned, as Valve told Adult Swim it would not publish the game. The problem? The Greenlight page. Because the developers had already started the Greenlight process, Valve claimed the deal with Adult Swim would send indie developers the wrong message, namely that they should look for publishers as a way to get around the crowd-support system.

Gabe Newell explains:

Our message to indies regarding publishers is do it for your own reasons, but do not split your royalties with a publisher expecting an automatic 'Yes' on Greenlight.

Paranautical Activity did eventually make it through Greenlight without publishing assistance from Adult Swim, and progressed through the Early Access program, but - after today - that's where the story ends.

"Indie developers" ffs. I call myself an indie developer, unproven yet, but i cant relate to any of these bufons. First, most of them they make hipster pretentious games, or minecraft, platformer clones... since they have no gaming culture or GD experience, and then they burst with these nonsense.

Retard thinks that twitter is some private chatroom where he can say anything he wants without reprisal, learns that it's a public platform where every retarded comment you make is preserved for all-time for everyone to see. He's not the the first indie developer/freelancer who's learned first-hand the consequences of not understanding basic public-relations, and in this day and age, he certainly will not be the last.

Indeed, i only use twitter to promote my sites, and occasionally to retweet games launches i like, usually made by friends. Not to promote my SJW/Political agenda or some other inane status messages. I have Codex for that:

:troll:

Its ironical that these "idiocracy" social tools that hipsters use to death, in the end brings them to their own demise. I think its the best to ignore everything and make the games you would love to play.

I'm still not sure what Steam did to him to send him on a rampage. Talk about being an entitled, spoiled brat. This seems like something that could have been solved with a few e-mail exchanges.

But i like that Valve used the death threat to get rid of him. Those people have worked hard to make sure so called internet "harassment" ought to be taken super seriously (even though 99% of the times it isn't), now let them enjoy the fruits of their own labor.

From what i remember from TotalBiscuitzz... in 2013 the publisher didnt managed to get this game on steam directly, so they had to go through Steam Greenlight... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2n1FVmOIL8 (TB)

I understand somewhat his frustration after so many months of development, but just betting everything on steam its not the way to go. I think its a solo dev and from pressure he just popped...

In preparation for Halloween, some games with horror elements were selected to be featured on sales. Steam erroneously labeled his game as "early access" (alpha/beta state) which means less people willing to buy the game, and when he contacted them they would take too long to fix it. He was already angry with them since they wouldn't allow him to release the game on a weekend (more time on the spotlight), and how he lost the contract with Adult Swim because Valve wouldn't allow him to back off on his Greenlight request.

tl;dr - he had valid reasons to be upset but being a hotheaded dumbass he decided to write death threats to the guy who "monopolizes the industry", according to him. What could possibly go wrong?

I see. That is in fact pretty shitty, but his reaction certainly didn't help, and he should have known better.

"Indie developers" ffs. I call myself an indie developer, unproven yet, but i cant relate to any of these bufons. First, most of them they make hipster pretentious games, or minecraft, platformer clones... since they have no gaming culture or GD experience, and then they burst with these nonsense.

Yeah, it should be mandatory to spend at least half a year posting in GD before you can publish an indie game.
Good point. Where else would you learn the neccessary unwarranted self-importance and DRAAAMAAAA skills required to be an indie game developer?

I'm still not sure what Steam did to him to send him on a rampage. Talk about being an entitled, spoiled brat. This seems like something that could have been solved with a few e-mail exchanges.

He seemed to think that Valve owns him something and should suck his dick just because he allowed them to sell his wonderfull creation. If he had so many problems with steam and hated them as a platfor then he shouldn't ever release the game on steam. But no, he knew that steam means a fair amount of money for him, and he wanted that money very much, and just couldnt stop himself from also whining like an entitled little piece of shit.

They owe not being incompetent shits since it's a contract and not a favour. He's not in the wrong for being angry, he's being laughed at for expressing it like a fucktard. If you MUST vent to no one in particular on the internet, do it like everyone else and post it on 4chan, not with your goddamn name and photo attached to it, especially on a medium where sarcasm isn't always obvious (lol 140 characters)
