Time-wise, we cannot check them both out. Shall we go to the town of Domst, or to the village of Clinacle?

oGIX2Yi.png

Where to now? Domst or Clinacle? Let's have a vote.

I hope to have the results by Tuesday morning European time (Monday night US time).

(Also, if anyone has a singular noun for the claw people that sounds less stupid than 'claw person', please post your suggestion.)

tyranny-killsinshadow.png

Tyranny, you were a terrible game

Of course we go to the female. And maybe you could use something like "Clawmen" (copying the Beastmen term).

Jamrock's no Rance, so don't keep your hopes up.

Hopes are the last thing to die.

Fine, the pastoral village of Clinacle it is then.

I was hoping you'd pick the other option, since I've been to Clinacle and found it a bit stupid. Was hoping that Domst would be better.

Also, let's face it. Monks are pretty cool.

Tell us next time!. We're simple minds, when we see chances for female party we pick them. But yer running the LP, after all. Can't we get both options as alternate timelines? Sure, double the work for ya for an update.....

The potential-party-member encounters in this game seem to be tied to time, not to place. You get the same encounter on day 1, same on day 2, etc.

Anyway, 'a bit stupid' was my first impression. It may have been unwarranted. But I now have a chance to re-evaluate the scenario.

I played through the village, and now have about 800 lines of dialogue etc to translate, though I estimate that at least 50 % of that is rubbish I can either summarise or throw away. For comparison, my posts so far have been between 80 and 180 lines. Probably no hope for going through both options.

DAY ONE

GpiCAfW.png
Come, Jamrock-san, let's head out with our heads held high!

GT: Come on, Jam Rock-san, let's go home!

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, we should.

d30HWT2.png
Okay, let's depart!

VILLAGE OF CLINACLE

0eiP6w2.png

The dirt road extends straight towards north, surrounded by fences.

As can be expected from people making a living from grazing animals, the tranquil landscape extends before us.

This is the village of Clinacle we were told about...

GpiCAfW.png
Anyway, we should pay a visit to this woman called Karikai.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, that's right.

--------------

In every town, there seems to be someone ready to blabber something in the first square we move into.

7pzvGsE.png

Weren't you ... one of my students in the dojo?

vaxlOCi.png
Oh my, travellers in this remote village, how rare.

vaxlOCi.png
Oh, and a miko-sama from the temple, too. What on earth happened?

d30HWT2.png
Oh, good. We are looking for a claw woman by the name Karikai. Do you happen to know where she would live?

vaxlOCi.png
Oh, Karikai's house, that's straight north on this road. It's not far away.

d30HWT2.png
I see. Thank you.

vaxlOCi.png
No need, just happy to help.

vaxlOCi.png
Uh-oh, if I keep lazing around here like this, Mummy's going to shout at me again. So bye!

Straight north, eh?

So, I go straight north and find the house.

YZx1tpk.png

This should be Karikai's house if I am to believe the villagers...

d30HWT2.png
Anyway, we should find her.

*knock knock*

............

I knocked on the door, but got no response back.

d30HWT2.png
...........

GpiCAfW.png
Maybe she's out?

d30HWT2.png
I guess so...

I tried the handle, but the door seemed to be locked.

d30HWT2.png
Probably out.

SqCT7Bz.png

m0mdGYK.png
Do you have business with Karikai?

As I was wondering what to do now, an old man spoke to us.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, that's right, but it seems she's out right now...

m0mdGYK.png
She should be at the feeding lot around this time.

d30HWT2.png
Feeding lot? ~~

m0mdGYK.png
Yeah, go back this road and ... go either round right, or round left, the road forms a loop anyway, and the feeding lot's in the north.

m0mdGYK.png
She should be working there.

d30HWT2.png
Got it. Thanks, old man.

m0mdGYK.png
No need, it was my pleasure. Bye now.

GpiCAfW.png
Quite a bit of help from a friendly passer-by, no?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, that's right.

d30HWT2.png
Anyway, I guess we should head for the feeding lot now.

In a random encounter, we meet bounty hunters who look somehow familiar. Let's see how Kalderina fares in combat. (Whole combat reproduced below.)

sQHWGWm.png

j2r6LYo.png
Ha-ha! Found you, Jamrock!

d30HWT2.png
What?

7K8dOQr.png
We'll just capture you and get our reward!

Combat, round one:

Jamrock attacks the Master Bounty Hunter!

Master Bounty Hunter gets hit for 24 damage!

Kalderina attacks the Bounty Hunter!

Bounty Hunter gets hit for 8 damage!

Bounty Hunter attacks Jamrock with Rope Throwing Capture!

Jamrock gets hit for 2 damage!

The rope tightens and deals extra 7 damage!

Jamrock is stunned!

Master Bounty Hunter attacks Kalderina with Sword!

Kalderina gets hit for 16 damage!

zUdqQKr.png

Jamrock's icon got a zig-zag stitch to indicate he's stunned.

Combat, round two:

Jamrock is stunned and cannot attack.

Jamrock takes a defensive pose!

Kalderina attacks the Bounty Hunter!

Bounty Hunter gets hit for 13 damage!

Bounty Hunter attacks Jamrock with Rope Throwing Capture!

But, the attack misses.

Master Bounty Hunter attacks Kalderina with Rope Throwing Capture!

But, the attack misses.

Combat, round three:

Jamrock is stunned and cannot attack.

Jamrock takes a defensive pose!

Kalderina attacks the Bounty Hunter!

Bounty Hunter gets hit for 12 damage! The Bounty Hunter collapses!

Master Bounty Hunter attacks Jamrock with Rope Throwing Capture!

But, the attack misses.

Combat, round four:

Stun wears off now.

Jamrock attacks the Master Bounty Hunter!

Master Bounty Hunter gets hit for 27 damage! The Master Bounty Hunter collapses!

Kalderina receives 1 activity point! (1 Star = 2 activity points)

Everyone not knocked out in the party gets healed back to full health!

Kalderina wasn't bad, dealt a bit more damage than I expected.

I do not understand what this activity point thing is or why they're measured in stars.

Also, I guess hitpoints at zero means a knock-out and the party member is disabled for the rest of the day. I have yet to actually /get/ a party member knocked out though so I'm not sure.

There's also a random encounter with some wild dogs later on. Kalderina receives 1 activity point from that.

---------------------

So we find the feeding lot or whatever it was called.

e0cx9Mt.png

On the fenced squarelike open space, chickens and goats had been set loose.

It seems this was the place the old man spoke of.

It seems the villagers were jointly looking after the animals here. The square was not big, but it was the way these villagers made a living and it was built conscientiously.

As I look through the feeding lot, I saw a claw woman tending the chickens.

GpiCAfW.png
Might that person be Karikai-san?

d30HWT2.png
I guess so...

I decided to speak to her.

d30HWT2.png
Excuse me. Are you the one known as Karikai?

5NvS8eM.png

6Vqs0yV.png
...? Yes ... that is me?

She had a slight Claw accent.

Kalderina looked probingly at me for a while, and then asked her:

GpiCAfW.png
We are from the Zeinhad temple. We understand that you have previously consulted the church temple and ...

6Vqs0yV.png
...!

As she started to talk, I saw shock in this woman's ... Karikai's expression.

d30HWT2.png
...?

6Vqs0yV.png
Ah, er, do ... you ...

d30HWT2.png
No, we would just like to ask you a few questions about that.

6Vqs0yV.png
I ... I do not have anything to talk about with you! Er ... that time ... was a bit ... so ... never mind ...

She was trying to gloss over something or other in a language she wasn't fully accustomed to, and the end result was indecipherable. ~~~

6Vqs0yV.png
So ... please leave! I ...

d30HWT2.png
...?

I noticed her body shivering.

The shivers reveal that she holds something. ~~~

What happened to this woman, I wonder?

But, even though she's asking us to leave, this is not the time for that.

  1. Try to talk with her
  2. Implore her
  3. Threaten her

I generally try to be reasonable. Number One.

I tried to say something to her.

d30HWT2.png
But, before, at the church ...

6Vqs0yV.png
Please leave! What happened earlier was not important. I am grateful that they let me stay here, but ...

A sudden improvement in communications skills.

She tried to cut off the conversation.

6Vqs0yV.png
Anyway, I will leave now.

She hastily turned around.

d30HWT2.png
チダイダン。 (Wait.)

She was surprised by the sudden claw people's words, she turned back.

6Vqs0yV.png
Can you speak ... our language?

d30HWT2.png
シ (Yeah...)

6Vqs0yV.png
.........

d30HWT2.png
Please listen to me for a bit.

I spoke to her in her own language, told her that Minvi had been kidnapped, that it was done by the claw people, and that a large-scale rebellion was related to these things.

Karikai was still slightly shivering, but she did manage to listen to me until the end.

6Vqs0yV.png
..........

d30HWT2.png
We currently have no information on these things. Please, if you have anything at all, can you tell us?

6Vqs0yV.png
...........

6Vqs0yV.png
...All right...

After thinking for a while, she spoke with human words.

6Vqs0yV.png
I do not know how much what I can tell you will help, but...

6Vqs0yV.png
If you come to my house, later, I will tell you as much as I can.

d30HWT2.png
Thank you.

I felt some discomfort on how quickly Karikai agreed to speak with us.

But beggars can't be choosers. If she's willing to speak to us, we don't have a reason to turn her down either.

6Vqs0yV.png
My house is...

d30HWT2.png
Oh, we visited the place before we came here.

6Vqs0yV.png
Oh. If so, I will go ahead and prepare a bit, so please take your time.

d30HWT2.png
All right.

6Vqs0yV.png
Then ... good-bye.

Karikai left in haste.

I guess we should head over to her house...

-------------------

We explore the village a bit, talk to people, knock on doors, ask around.

d30HWT2.png
*knock knock*

As I knock, I hear heavy footsteps and then the door opens.

khkSBuP.png

wz3wmwT.png
Oh, is there something wrong?

d30HWT2.png
I'd like to ask some things about Karikai.

wz3wmwT.png
Hmm ... that claw woman ...

wz3wmwT.png
Well, she has quite a bit of mystery surrounding her.

d30HWT2.png
Hmm?

wz3wmwT.png
Well, how should I put it ... She just stumbled into this village in the middle of the night, her first words being 'Help me!'.

d30HWT2.png
............

wz3wmwT.png
Well, back then she couldn't speak other than her own language, so she said that in Claw...

wz3wmwT.png
When I asked my drinking buddy [who lives next door and is a claw person] what she meant, that's how he translated it to me.

wz3wmwT.png
And then, we thought something needed to be done so we brought her to the local temple church, and got her shelter there. ~~

wz3wmwT.png
She sometimes looks like she's scared of something, and she's been keeping quiet of her past ... but she does work hard so...

wz3wmwT.png
So nobody ever bothers asking her of her past.

d30HWT2.png
I see...

wz3wmwT.png
Well, that's how it is. That's why the people here don't really know her that well.

d30HWT2.png
You told us quite a bit. Thank you.

wz3wmwT.png
No worries. Well, I'll be off now.

He bowed and left us.

Elsewhere, we learn that this village consists of about 70 % humans, 30 % claw people, whereas most other places in Altia have 90 % or more of humans (and in some places, the claw people even get deported)...

I also learn that Kalderina is pretty good dealing with children...

As a random encounter, we run into a soldier with dogs.

I think there's roughly a 1/10 chance of getting a random enemy encounter on every move.

Zw0x6io.png

RCaEMXz.png
You're Jamrock, wanted for questioning, right? Nowhere to run for you now!

d30HWT2.png
Damn, they found me!?

There's a fight, but I use my Persuasion skill on the first turn to convince them that this is all in error.

Besides, wasn't the church supposed to send a letter to absolve me?

------------------------

We finally reach Karikai's house.

ERcmSgL.png

Karikai was waiting in front of the house.

6Vqs0yV.png
Here, come in.

Once she made sure it was us, she opened the door and invited us in.

5hrmnAl.png

6Vqs0yV.png
............

She somehow appeared restless, and was shifting her eyes all over the room.

d30HWT2.png
.........

6Vqs0yV.png
Err ... I will make tea for you...

GpiCAfW.png
Oh, please, no need to...

d30HWT2.png
..............

Still acting unnaturally, she went deeper into the house and disappeared from our sight.

d30HWT2.png
............

I felt some strange discomfort with Karikai's behaviour ... Not about her past that she wishes not to delve into, but more like that she is being menaced by something...

d30HWT2.png
...!!

d30HWT2.png
Watch out!

The next instant, I thrust Kalderina away.

GpiCAfW.png
Wha!?

The moment she let out that sound, she was falling out of her chair and onto the floor.

GpiCAfW.png
What's wrong, Jamrock-san!? Why in the world...

*screech*

The next moment, claw marks, made with overwhelming strength, run over the table we were just sitting at.

yfMmK2c.png

d30HWT2.png
...!

They were wearing masks and I could not see their facial features.

But, from the way they held their bodies, it was clear that they had been trained for combat. That, plus the bloodlust in the air signalled to me that we were in danger.

GT: However, the body, body, and murder of obviously battle-trained exercises had told me the dangers of danger.

*slide*

I drew my sword, almost as if a reflex.

I shall summarise the ensuing battle here. It's not a difficult one but we do get a bit low on HP.

sYYinI9.png

Three religious assassins again. They do around 5 damage per round, but they sometimes poison us (the green icon on Jamrock in the screenshot), which deals 10 damage for (I think) three rounds.

I get to try out Kalderina's healing skill. Heals about 25 hp. Not great, but better than nothing.

Incidentally, these enemies can heal themselves too. Discounting that, it takes 2-3 hits to kill one of them with regular attacks.

In the end, the combat ends with 65/150 hitpoints on Jamrock's side, and 61/100 on Kalderina's. Both have 86 work points left.

Kalderina received two activity points from the combat.

d30HWT2.png
..........

The room now had a pile of corpses.

I peeled off their masks just in case, but none of them were faces I recognise.

d30HWT2.png
Where is Karikai?

GpiCAfW.png
Ah!

We hurried to the corner of the house where she disappeared.

69apBvj.png

6Vqs0yV.png
Ah!!

6Vqs0yV.png
Don't kill me! I ... I ...!!

GpiCAfW.png
W-Wait a bit. We don't intend to ...

It took almost half a koku until she looked somewhat calm again.

2LrFLyc.png

6Vqs0yV.png
............

But now she was silent, not speaking a single word.

In her state of stupor, we were not even sure whether she saw us at all.

GT: It is a suspicious self-destructed body and it is even doubtful whether he can see this thing.

d30HWT2.png
............

But ... we can't wait like this forever.

So I...

  1. Ask about her past
  2. Ask why she divulged our presence to outsiders
  3. Threaten her to get information

Number two seems most reasonable.

d30HWT2.png
Did you tell them of us?

6Vqs0yV.png
..........

d30HWT2.png
Why? Do you have something you want to hide so bad?

My words faded out towards the end. If the situation was indeed like that, we shouldn't pry into it.

6Vqs0yV.png
...that's not it...

d30HWT2.png
...?

At last she spoke, but it was not coherent yet. ~~~~

6Vqs0yV.png
I ... I was just ... scared ...

d30HWT2.png
...Wait a bit. Can you start from the beginning?

6Vqs0yV.png
Yes...

6Vqs0yV.png
Me and ... my husband ... were part of a claw organisation...

6Vqs0yV.png
The name of that organisation was 'Order of Dark, Blood, and Claw'. They aimed to fight for the rights of the claw people...

6Vqs0yV.png
I ... I wasn't so deep in the organisation as my husband was, so I don't know for sure but...

6Vqs0yV.png
Under the leader, Timirtos, and his shaman granddaughter, they were apparently scheming for something terrifying, or so my husband ... Raderoim told me.

Raderoim was probably what her husband was called.

6Vqs0yV.png
I and Raderoim decided to run away from the organisation.

6Vqs0yV.png
But ... the Order did not let us go.

6Vqs0yV.png
Before we reached this village, Raderoim was caught by the pursuers...

6Vqs0yV.png
I ran for my dear life and somehow escaped, barely reaching this village's temple church.

6Vqs0yV.png
But, the words of the pursuers from the Order who sank their claws into Raderoim's back, have stuck to my mind ever since.

6Vqs0yV.png
"If you speak of the Order, you're next..."

6Vqs0yV.png
I was so terrified by those words that I told no one of Raderoim, nor of the Order.

6Vqs0yV.png
The people of the temple church didn't pry into it more than necessary, and arranged me a place to stay in this village.

6Vqs0yV.png
But, about half a year ago...

6Vqs0yV.png
Someone from the Order came by for a visit...

6Vqs0yV.png
I first thought they came to kill me...

6Vqs0yV.png
But I was wrong.

6Vqs0yV.png
"Before long, a human investigating the Order may come to this village."

6Vqs0yV.png
"If they come to you, direct them to your house, and let us take care of the rest for you."

6Vqs0yV.png
And then...

d30HWT2.png
And then, you told them of us?

6Vqs0yV.png
Yes ... I'm very sorry...

d30HWT2.png
You don't have to worry about that, but ...

d30HWT2.png
Are you fine? Speaking of this after having stayed silent for this long... ~~~

6Vqs0yV.png
No, I owe you at least this much...

The frightened expression she had back when we met was gone, and she now looked like as if she had come to understand something... ~~~

d30HWT2.png
But...

We can't leave her here alone. She'll just get killed.

GpiCAfW.png
Er, Jamrock-san?

d30HWT2.png
Hm?

GpiCAfW.png
The temple church of Clinacle could perhaps offer shelter to Karikai.

d30HWT2.png
Indeed...

d30HWT2.png
It's not a bad move. Even if someone from the Order of Dark, Blood, and Claw comes here, they shouldn't reach inside the temple church...

6Vqs0yV.png
But, if they want it enough, they can do it.

d30HWT2.png
They probably wouldn't spend that much effort solely for your sake.

6Vqs0yV.png
...........

d30HWT2.png
We have the letter from the head priest of the royal temple to back us up, so the people at the temple church should handle the situation with some gravity.

6Vqs0yV.png
I understand. Please ask them, then.

We get the movement interface back. We can still talk to her, but what she says is quite uninteresting:

d30HWT2.png
Aren't you going to the church yet?

6Vqs0yV.png
No, I was thinking of packing a bit first...

d30HWT2.png
But it might be dangerous if you wait until sundown...

6Vqs0yV.png
If that happens, I will ask my neighbours to accompany me.

d30HWT2.png
I guess that's OK then.

6Vqs0yV.png
Thank you very much for what you did. I do not know how to thank you enough.

d30HWT2.png
No, thank you too. You told us quite a bit.

6Vqs0yV.png
Oh... I was hoping I could be of some more assistance...

d30HWT2.png
No, you were of plenty help.

6Vqs0yV.png
Oh.

Let's leave the house.

d30HWT2.png
Well then... Thank you for your hospitality.

6Vqs0yV.png
No, thank you. I caused you a lot of trouble and owe you everything.

d30HWT2.png
No worries.

Yeah, I hate translating Japanese thank-yous...

We exited Karikai's house.

OK, this turned rather long so I'm splitting this update into two posts.

Here's the completed minimap of Clinacle:

What's this commotion?

hUBLCLN.png

kclgf3u.png
Jamrock the kidnapper! We finally got you cornered!

d30HWT2.png
...!?

Ten soldiers were standing in front of us, blocking our way.

d30HWT2.png
...........

HtOhrY1.png
This is as far as you'll get. Surrender yourself!

...We mustn't get arrested here.

*slide*

I took the sword from my back.

kclgf3u.png
Planning to resist, eh?

d30HWT2.png
Sorry, but we finally got a lead, so we kind of need to be going now.

RCaEMXz.png
Get him!

The next moment, the ten soldiers charged in unison.

moFUUFP.png

And here a mock battle starts. It kind of looks like a battle, but I have no control over it and there's no combat UI in sight.

RCaEMXz.png
Haah!

The soldier is charging with his spear.

67CJb2k.png
...!

Just as I parried it, another soldier with a spear was heading towards me.

koWVu7A.png
Haa!

67CJb2k.png
*swish*

koWVu7A.png
...!?

The spear I struck with the return motion of my sword cracked from the middle.

67CJb2k.png
Kalderina! Are you OK!?

pwfspUi.png
Ah, yes. Barely.

Kalderina responded from behind me.

We're still OK, but...

RCaEMXz.png
Haah!

67CJb2k.png
...!!

...I was thinking, as I drove back the spear thrust at me.

...but we won't last long at this rate...

With the overwhelming numbers, our options are mostly sealed...

pwfspUi.png
Kyah!?

67CJb2k.png
Kalderina!?

Kalderina was surrounded, and the soldiers were attacking her one by one.

67CJb2k.png
Damn!

When I leapt out to help her, I no longer had the space to swing my sword. ~~

67CJb2k.png
...!!

As I jumped in to protect Kalderina, I expose myself to the spears.

Is this the end?

jGJwtGQ.png

I braced myself.

*thud*

...I heard an awfully loud sound.

For a spear to make this kind of sound, it must be a rather deep wound, or hit right next to the ear...

The pain wasn't registering yet, so it must be a stomach hit...

Though I had the time to think of these things, the pain still wasn't hitting me...

67CJb2k.png
...?

When I looked down, I didn't see my own pierced stomach, but a spear tip that was lying on the ground.

Thrust into the ground I saw a massive weapon that was blade for half of its length.

Not as thin as a halberd, not as crude as a battle axe.

This must be that thing they call a bardiche.

RCaEMXz.png
Wh-What the hell are you doing!?

Lscj6kk.png
Oof.

I saw the weapon rise easily.

rBsIKwk.png

2V00egs.png
Nothing special, I just happened to pass by.

kclgf3u.png
We'll arrest you too if you stand in our way!

2V00egs.png
Bah, don't think so highly of yourselves. Assault this missus and fellow with an even headcount at least, if you want my respect.

koWVu7A.png
You idiot, don't you know he's Jamrock the kidnapper? Are you still going to stand in our way?

2V00egs.png
Kidnapper? Oh, yeah, I saw the mountain of posters the other day...

The man was casually examining my face.

2V00egs.png
Hmh...

2V00egs.png
Does nobody these days have any eye for people? This man ain't a kidnapper.

RCaEMXz.png
Oh, shut up! We're taking you in too!

GT: Better noisy! Prepare for you to do so as this will happen!

2V00egs.png
Well, go ahead and try.

Along his provocation, the man raised his bardiche.

ARP9BGX.png
*hmph*

And faced the soldiers.

Who on earth is he?

Anyway, at this point I should...

  1. Watch from the side.
  2. Fight myself too.

I don't know, I don't really want to kill soldiers. This being-wanted thing must be just a mistake. Hope they get it straightened out soon.

I decided to watch quietly from the side.

ARP9BGX.png
Haaaah!

koWVu7A.png
Uwaah!

The man wielded his heavy-looking bardiche as easily as a hollow bamboo pole.

Of course, his strength played a part, but from the way his opponents fell on every strike, I could tell that this man had a good amount of skill too.

In a few moments, the soldiers all were lying on the ground, grunting in anguish.

2V00egs.png
Oomph.

The man shouldered his bardiche again, and walked towards us.

WmYgCql.png

2V00egs.png
Hey, they called you Jamrock, right?

d30HWT2.png
That's right.

d30HWT2.png
Who on earth are you?

2V00egs.png
The name's Sandrake. Just a travelling mercenary.

d30HWT2.png
But, why did you do this...?

2V00egs.png
I didn't particularly have a reason.

2V00egs.png
You didn't look like a kidnapper to me so ... I guess you have your own reasons?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, that's about right.

2V00egs.png
Hum.

2V00egs.png
Hey, Jamrock.

d30HWT2.png
...?

2V00egs.png
Do you want to employ me?

d30HWT2.png
What do you mean?

2V00egs.png
Right now, if I just get the travelling expenses taken care of, and money for the booze, I'll accompany you until wherever you're going.

2V00egs.png
Honestly, even if my price was one per cent of the country's annual tax revenues, I'd still be a bargain. ~~~~~

d30HWT2.png
Wait a bit. Why are you again... ~~

One per cent of the country's annual tax revenues ... he's probably not exaggerating.

I can tell from the skill he handled the soldiers with. If I met him on the battlefield, I'd probably have a fifty-fifty chance of winning.

But, why would a man this skilled then...?

2V00egs.png
Actually, I just finished a job. I was just wandering around.

2V00egs.png
I'm tired of travelling by myself, and I happened to see you surrounded by those soldiers.

2V00egs.png
Then I just decided to meddle a bit.

d30HWT2.png
..........

2V00egs.png
Well, I'm not really a meddler but if I see people in peril, I can't really leave them alone.

2V00egs.png
So, how is it? Will you employ me?

At first, I didn't know whether he was joking or for real, but it now seems that he's for real.

  1. Accept his proposal
  2. Decline his proposal

We don't need you; me and Kalderina are doing just fine.

d30HWT2.png
We appreciate your offer, but we'll decline.

2V00egs.png
Hey, what's up with that?

d30HWT2.png
As you guessed, we do have our reasons, and it's not a journey where we'd lightly get others involved.

2V00egs.png
It sounds like something where you /will/ need help.

d30HWT2.png
This is a problem of my own.

2V00egs.png
If you'll carry all burden by yourself, you'll eventually get the rug pulled from under you, you know?

2V00egs.png
I think that's kind of where the peril comes from. ~~~

2V00egs.png
I won't force my way in, but how about trusting others a bit?

d30HWT2.png
.........

  1. You convinced me
  2. No, I still decline

All right, will you shut up if I let you in?

d30HWT2.png
Are the terms you stated for real?

2V00egs.png
Yeah.

d30HWT2.png
Then, will you accompany us?

2V00egs.png
That's the spirit!

Sandrake joined our party!

2V00egs.png
If that's settled, I have some luggage to transport. Where are you staying?

d30HWT2.png
We're actually at the temple church.

2V00egs.png
Temple church? What a strange place to stay the night...

d30HWT2.png
That's part of our reasons...

2V00egs.png
Hmm...

2V00egs.png
Well, I'll drill you about it later.

2V00egs.png
I guess I'll meet you at the church then?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah. We'll be waiting there.

2V00egs.png
All right, bye then.

---------------------

So, we have nothing left to do. Unless we want to grind with random encounters. I'm not sure this game has any experience point system so I'm not sure that would help.

Let's leave.

d30HWT2.png
Well then, I guess I'll say a word or two to the people who helped me today.

ZUjzhxi.png

GpiCAfW.png
How did I do today?

d30HWT2.png
Well...

  1. You did great!
  2. You did a good job!
  3. You backed me up well!
  4. I was hoping that you'd have a more active part...
  5. You seemed in bad shape today...

...What the hell? Am I supposed to give out performance reviews?

All right. I'll give Kalderina four stars out of five, because she saved us from the bounty hunters when Jamrock got stunned.

d30HWT2.png
You did a very good job.

GpiCAfW.png
Oh, no, not at all...

Kalderina looked uncomfortable when saying that.

GpiCAfW.png
...But, thank you very much, Jamrock-san...

d30HWT2.png
Well then, everybody. Let's get back to the temple church!

Slow as hell, but otherwise superior. He reminds me a lot of Rolf from Knights of Xentar.

The special skills are:

【One Shot】 Because of the fighting spirit, attack technique to release at once. It is effective against 2 enemy front rows, but after striking for rigidity, it becomes impossible to move one turn. Required work points: 3

One Shot attacks two enemies at once, but renders Sandrake immobile for one extra turn.

【Entering thunder】 During the battle, the command that Sand Lake puts katana on the alert status alias and returns it to normal. Required work points: 3

With Entering Thunder, Sandrake can give a party member a pep talk which makes stun etc harmful effects wear off.

---------------

When we get a new party member, Jamrock visits their room and has a talk with them.

d30HWT2.png
Oh right, the priest told me that Sandrake had arrived.

d30HWT2.png
I should pay him a visit.

d30HWT2.png
Sandrake, are you there?

2V00egs.png
Oh! Jamrock, is it? Come in!

A merry-sounding voice greeted me from inside the room.

BaND6xm.png

2V00egs.png
Heya! Sorry for imposing on you and the church.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

2V00egs.png
So, er, by the way, Jamrock.

d30HWT2.png
What?

2V00egs.png
Nice of you to have employed me, but ... I haven't heard anything concrete of your situation yet. So if it's all right, I'd like to hear of it right now.

d30HWT2.png
You're right, yeah.

I explained the gist to him, starting with Minvi.

d30HWT2.png
Well, that's how it is.

2V00egs.png
Hmm... I see...

2V00egs.png
At any rate, she's pretty important, isn't she?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

2V00egs.png
So why are you sticking your neck out here again?

d30HWT2.png
...?

2V00egs.png
Well ... normal people would first think of running away or leaving it to others, right?

2V00egs.png
There aren't many people who would choose to do something themselves, yes?

d30HWT2.png
You think so?

2V00egs.png
Yeah.

d30HWT2.png
.........

2V00egs.png
So basically, I was asking your reasons on this matter.

d30HWT2.png
Reasons, huh?

2V00egs.png
Yeah.

d30HWT2.png
............

After thinking for a while, I replied to Sandrake:

  1. Just going with the flow.
  2. I have faith in my skill.
  3. I can't leave it for others to deal with.

d30HWT2.png
Just going with the flow, I guess.

2V00egs.png
Huh...

d30HWT2.png
Well, I don't think I have any other way to express it.

2V00egs.png
Then, if someone else was in a similar situation as you were, would you think he too would do the same?

d30HWT2.png
Well, I wouldn't know.

2V00egs.png
Hum... All righty then.

2V00egs.png
Then ... well, anyway, I'll be working with you starting tomorrow, Jamrock!

d30HWT2.png
...Yeah.

2V00egs.png
I guess I'll go to bed now?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, do that. Tomorrow's an early rise.

2V00egs.png
Oh, well, bye then.

I left Sandrake's room.

d30HWT2.png
I came back to my own room.

Also, Jamrock can visit existing party members' rooms. Usually they have just the same short 'thanks for visiting' script, or in the case they were left out of the day's action, it's a 'well take me with tomorrow' script.

I won't reproduce these since they're not exactly interesting. But sometimes if I visit a room, they ask me whether I have time to listen to their worries and I guess that gives me points towards the character's ending.

We're also given an option to reflect on my actions of the past day. Let's see what happens.

How did I behave today? Did I do anything wrong?

..........

d30HWT2.png
All right, I'll go ask a priest here.

q8cRJwe.png

yDgBVZX.png
What's the matter, Master Jamrock?

d30HWT2.png
Can I talk with you for a bit?

yDgBVZX.png
Yes. Go ahead.

I told him of the happenings of today, and of the actions I took.

yDgBVZX.png
So that's what happened today. Hmm ... based on what I just heard...

yDgBVZX.png
I think that you actually acted in a positive light.

yDgBVZX.png
Also, in my assessment, you handled the situations calmly.

yDgBVZX.png
In any case, you can learn from the experiences today and use it as a basis for your future choices.

d30HWT2.png
Understood. I will reflect on your words some more.

yDgBVZX.png
May Zeinhad protect you.

I thanked the priest and went back to my room.

Oookay, what was the point of that?

---------------------

Well, nothing left to do. Off to bed then.

d30HWT2.png
Phew.

I lay down on the bed and let out a sigh.

We managed somehow today ... but this was only the first day.

The time most certainly moves on. ~~~

d30HWT2.png
...........

d30HWT2.png
Minvi, be safe.

wQBWoTG.png
Ah... I'm sorry!

wQBWoTG.png
It was my first...

These two lines were accompanied by the relevant recollection image but I don't like having two large images in a row so I'm leaving them out.

d30HWT2.png
.............

The piercing anxiety overlaps with the feeling of five years ago.

d30HWT2.png
...!

I shake my head in an effort to drive the feeling away.

d30HWT2.png
Anyway, let's sleep now.

That's the most important thing I can do now to save Minvi.

IhLj5vF.png

MEANWHILE

*clack clack clack* [sound of walking on cobblestones]

zxMn5GL.png
Your Majesty.

8P4XhWa.png

8m9knWs.png
Oh, Minister Galiba.

zxMn5GL.png
How is your health? [Should you be walking out this late?]

GT: Who is the person who adjusts?

8m9knWs.png
I'm fine. But more importantly, has there been word on Minvi and Jamrock?

zxMn5GL.png
I'm afraid we still do not know the whereabouts of Lady Minvi and her abductor Jamrock, but be assured that we have worthwhile intelligence on them.

zxMn5GL.png
It is based on his collusion with the beasts, and the crimes he has committed. We are watching the beasts' movements and from that know where to expect him. ~~~~

GT: He collided with the beast person and said that it involved the crime this time, based on that, they grab the movements of the beasts and are going to move forward.

8m9knWs.png
What? Colluding with the claw people?

zxMn5GL.png
It appears that their goal is to overthrow the government.

8m9knWs.png
I can't believe it... that this nation's greatest fencing master would do that ... I just can't believe it.

zxMn5GL.png
Well, it is possible that he had plans from the start, to use the rebellion to rise in rank.

zxMn5GL.png
Betraying your trust, the king's trust! We shall capture him, no matter what!

8m9knWs.png
I just can't believe it...

dmyM8Sz.png

All right, let's head to the chapel to prepare for the departure.

7olItGp.png

GpiCAfW.png
Ah, good morning, Jamrock-san.

d30HWT2.png
Oh, morning.

GpiCAfW.png
Still 13 days to go...

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

d30HWT2.png
We didn't learn much yesterday after all...

GpiCAfW.png
Yes. But I think we know our opponent a bit better now.

GT: Yes ... but, even if I understand a little, the opponent is harvested.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

d30HWT2.png
Anyway, let's progress towards the mountains a bit again.

GpiCAfW.png
Yes, I agree.

GpiCAfW.png
And, the places we will pass through that possibly have a connection with the case...

GpiCAfW.png
Er, there's the town of Cuminac and the village of Temze.

GpiCAfW.png
In the town of Cuminac, a few days ago, there was an incident where a group of masked claw people attacked the factory there.

GpiCAfW.png
It may be that the Order of Dark, Blood, and Claw is behind this incident.

GpiCAfW.png
And then, in the fishing village of Temze, we received a report of a sighting of suspicious-looking claw people boarding a ship and sailing away.

GpiCAfW.png
Maybe Minvi-oneesama went through there...

GpiCAfW.png
Where shall we head to? The town of Cuminac, or the village of Temze?

8ZQV9sK.png

Temze or Cuminac? Your vote matters.

Oh, one more thing. We can leave party members 'on hold' at the temple church -- leave them out of the action for the day. There's a maximum of four people in action. If you have five party members, you need to leave at least one back.

Their primary role is helping out with the fights. Leaving someone out doesn't really change the plot but they do sometimes add a bit of flavour.

Shall we go with full strength, or shall we leave either Kalderina or Sandrake out of the party?

Voting ends on Tuesday (or Monday night US time.)

Uhm. "Factory"? Depite being legit curious of what a Factory is in the mangled translation we'll better follow the path of Christ and go to the fishermen's village.

TO TEMZE

Those "performance reviews" prolly are to score relationship points and decide which girl the main character ends up with.

I don't think this is one of those games where you "sample" every girl before choosing (or end up with harem anyway).

Japan is truly a land of degenerates.

Temze it is, then.

I've been to the other place and the factory was indeed a factory, in the sense of "largish place that manufactures things". Larger than a workshop for sure. No assembly lines though.

Anyway, I've got a theory about the stars and activity points.

D8UAA2r.png

Here are my characters' statuses at the beginning of the Temze scenario. You might notice that Kalderina has gained five work oints.

Any time she got an activity point, the display showed half a star more. Given that she started at three stars, and gained 4 activity points (1 star = 2 activity points), she ended up at five stars. So my hypothesis is that these stars convert to extra work points once the scenario is over.

Jamrock's gained some points since the prologue too, but I've never seen a message saying something to that extent, so that must be through some other mechanism.

You'd think that if they're able to instantly communicate to every temple that they should keep Jamrock safe overnight then they would also be able to put out the memo to the authorities that he's not the abductor. They could be lying about having sent a letter, I guess, but then why bother with providing a safe space for him to sleep or letting the green #2 girl go with him if the intention is that he gets eliminated?

Also, I'd have much less confidence in the ability of a podunk temple to keep the claw traitor safe than Jamrock considering that the biggest one around with the highest religious authorities was not able to keep two puny claw dudes from abducting the blonde chick.

Ah, but the communication is not instant. They gave Kalderina a (sealed?) letter she's using to introduce us to the other temples.

Also, scratch the theory I introduced in my last post. I tested it by getting one character up to 12 stars, only got six work points. I think I'll stick by my original theory, that the stars are the amount of times I can use the special abilities of my characters. Just not sure why they keep resetting to 3.

One update coming up tomorrow, just need to proofread it. (Oh, and I will be slightly adjusting the thread's title very soon too. Removing one word from it, to be specific.)

DAY TWO

GpiCAfW.png
Come, Jamrock-san, let's head out with our heads held high!

d30HWT2.png
Yeah, we should.

d30HWT2.png
Okay, let's depart!

y20ucYl.png

VILLAGE OF TEMZE

GutzHIM.png

We had walked for about one koku since we first spotted the sandy ground until we reached the village of Temze.

I'm starting to think that this 'koku' thing is not two hours like I previously said, but a shorter time.

A day was 12 koku. Six koku for the hours with daylight, six for the hours after sundown. They were traditionally divided into three parts, so I would guess a game koku would then be around 40 minutes?

As could be expected for a fishermen's village, the strong sea breeze carried its salty smell to our nostrils.

d30HWT2.png
I'm worried about my sword...

2V00egs.png
Yours is at least still in the scabbard. My weapon's in the open... Great.

d30HWT2.png
Well, it's not going to be a long stay anyway.

2V00egs.png
That's true.

GpiCAfW.png
The wind sure is strong.

Kalderina said, while holding back her hair, flapping in the wind.

d30HWT2.png
The seashore's like that.

d30HWT2.png
All right, first we need to find the fisherman who says he saw the suspicious claw people.

We ask around. Everyone's saying that the fishermen, on a day like this, can be found in the village hall (?)

One interesting conversation happens here:

*knock knock*

Lscj6kk.png
Coming!

A child's energetic voice responded

XhlnhJn.png

Bvvyeit.png
What? Mister, who are you?

d30HWT2.png
Oh, we're travellers. Are you home alone?

Bvvyeit.png
Yeah!

d30HWT2.png
We're looking for the person who saw suspicious claw people here.

Bvvyeit.png
That's my Papa!

d30HWT2.png
What?

The unexpected results surprised me. We were just wandering the village aimlessly, after all.

GT: I was surprised that the village was wandering properly and there was an unexpected harvest.

Well, it's a small village, so something like this has a pretty high probability of happening...

Bvvyeit.png
I saw them too! I was with Papa when it happened!

d30HWT2.png
What did they look like? Do you know anything more about it? ~~

As I ask in rapid succession, the boy answers in a slightly startled way.

Bvvyeit.png
Er... erm ... the night two days ago ... but I was scared and kept behind papa's back.

d30HWT2.png
Oh.

Bvvyeit.png
And then dad said, "don't go out alone" ... so that's why I'm staying playing here!

d30HWT2.png
Oh?

d30HWT2.png
Oh, right. Do you know where your father is now?

Bvvyeit.png
Nope, he's been gone since the morning.

d30HWT2.png
Oh. Thanks, bye then.

Bvvyeit.png
Bye-bye, Mister!

I just wanted to say here that all those excessive oh's are an artefact of my translation.

We also find a soldier who expressed irritation about the fact that he was sent here, in the middle of nowhere. There's also a small pier with two ships docked.

Anyway, we finally reach the village hall.

*knock knock*

Lscj6kk.png
Yes? Come in.

gHjzXQK.png

KpWmMJx.png
...? Are you travellers?

The woman in front of us was looking at us, with some apprehension in her expression.

GT: A woman in front of me is looking at us, looking at us.

d30HWT2.png
We came here to talk with the fisherman who said he saw suspicious claw people.

KpWmMJx.png
Oh, are you from the church?

The woman seemed much less wary now.

KpWmMJx.png
He's probably at the beach right now.

d30HWT2.png
I see...

KpWmMJx.png
If you are in a hurry, you can go there by yourselves. It's not far away.

d30HWT2.png
Oh, good. We'll do that then.

d30HWT2.png
Well then, thanks and good-bye.

KpWmMJx.png
You're welcome.

And we find the fishermen.

po7rbV1.png

vaxlOCi.png
Maybe you just forgot to tie the rope?

wz3wmwT.png
I'm sure I did! I've been saying that since the start!

m0mdGYK.png
However ... beasts, around here?

d30HWT2.png
...?

At the beach, there were a number of fishermen, absorbed in conversation.

d30HWT2.png
Er, excuse me.

vaxlOCi.png
Hm? What do you want? ...I haven't seen you before, have I?

d30HWT2.png
The temple church should have told you of us. We heard that some fishermen sighted some suspicious claw people...

wz3wmwT.png
Aah, that's me, then! See? Even the temple church's investigating now!

vaxlOCi.png
Only because you took it so seriously and contacted pretty much everyone possible.

m0mdGYK.png
Now, now, won't you stop for now? We have visitors to tend to.

d30HWT2.png
So, what on earth happened?

m0mdGYK.png
Well ... some time ago, my boat went missing...

The old man spoke as though the boat's fate didn't concern him much.

wz3wmwT.png
And right that night, we saw some beasts with masks.

vaxlOCi.png
You're joking, right? Beasts with masks, just too good to be true!

Beasts with masks...

d30HWT2.png
These claw people ...

vaxlOCi.png
Claw people?

m0mdGYK.png
He means the beasts, doesn't he? I've heard some people call them that.

vaxlOCi.png
Oh, that's how it is?

d30HWT2.png
...............

The derogatory term seems to be the normal way to refer to the claw people here. I've heard that this is quite common in some rural areas, and in areas where the claw people don't really live...

d30HWT2.png
Yes, about those claw people. Did they have any distinctive marks or something, do you know?

wz3wmwT.png
Naaah... I was frightened, and my son was with me, so we were just watching from afar.

wz3wmwT.png
Besides, I can't tell them beasts apart from each other anyway.

vaxlOCi.png
Well, ain't that a swell excuse!

wz3wmwT.png
I'm sayin' this really happened!

m0mdGYK.png
And the same day this guy started with his story, my boat disappeared.

m0mdGYK.png
Me, I was thinking of retiring soon, so I didn't miss it much...

wz3wmwT.png
I really did see them!

vaxlOCi.png
Making up stories to feel special, you are!

m0mdGYK.png
And these two have been like this for ...

d30HWT2.png
I see...

In the meanwhile, their argument had gotten more intense.

vaxlOCi.png
Don't you even have any proof?

wz3wmwT.png
I do! I found something they dropped! I left it in my boat, so just wait and see!

vaxlOCi.png
Ooh, how interesting. How about you bring it and show it to us?

wz3wmwT.png
Yeah, I'll bring it and show you!

wz3wmwT.png
And to you folks from the church too! So wait!

I love their banter.

GTQYKIv.png

The man dashed off, not leaving us time to stop him.

m0mdGYK.png
Good grief...

vaxlOCi.png
Heh, I want to see what he brings back.

d30HWT2.png
.............

m0mdGYK.png
But, I do wonder how it is... Did the beasts he speaks of steal my boat?

The old man looked at my face as he said that.

m0mdGYK.png
What do you folks think?

vaxlOCi.png
No such thing ever happened, right?

The thought lead me to examine the middle-aged fisherman's words.

I have a feeling I don't have much reason to distrust him.

d30HWT2.png
Right...

I don't really have much to base this on, but...

  1. I believe him.
  2. I don't know.
  3. I don't believe him.

d30HWT2.png
I believe him.

vaxlOCi.png
Oh? You people of the temple church are really soft on others, aren't you?

m0mdGYK.png
Hey, won't you cut it off already!

...Masked claw people... Considering that it matches with the assassins from the Order of the Dark, Blood, and Claw we fought yesterday, it can't be a mere coincidence.

Therefore, I think the story here is credible.

d30HWT2.png
At any rate... hasn't he been gone for pretty long? Is his boat that far away?

m0mdGYK.png
No, it shouldn't be.

vaxlOCi.png
He's probably rummaging the boat, searching for some item that's at least somewhat believable, right?

m0mdGYK.png
Are you folks in a hurry?

Indeed, we shouldn't let the time pass by...

d30HWT2.png
Where is this boat you were talking about?

m0mdGYK.png
Docked along the pier, east of here.

d30HWT2.png
Thanks. I guess we'll go take a look.

vaxlOCi.png
That's a good idea. You'll just end up disappointed if you stay here and keep waiting.

d30HWT2.png
The pier in the east, right?

m0mdGYK.png
Yes.

d30HWT2.png
All right. Let's go then.

I think that's a good idea. Based on my experience with the game, if you leave some important NPC alone for a while, you'll find him dead the next moment.

So we go to the pier and find two ships...

We hopped onto the boat docked next to the pier.

The hull wasn't particularly large, and the boat creaked as it swayed in the waves.

On the deck, there was the man we had talked to on the beach.

SEZVYiu.png

wz3wmwT.png
Oh, you here?

d30HWT2.png
What's wrong? It was taking quite a bit of time and everyone was worried...

wz3wmwT.png
Oh, I'm sorry. I actually forgot where I hid the thing and now I can't find it.

wz3wmwT.png
Well, it's going to take a while here, so why don't you go to the other boat and wait there? ~~

d30HWT2.png
I see.

We followed his advice and stepped off the boat.

fNcBRdx.png

We went to the other ship and sat down, as the man suggested.

2V00egs.png
Uuh... I'm going to get seasick here.

d30HWT2.png
But we're not even at sea?

2V00egs.png
A raging horse or whatever else, I wouldn't mind, as long as it's got its legs on the ground, but when it's floating and swaying like this on the water ...

GT: I wonder what a ramping horse is, but it does not matter how bad my feet are on the ground, but it seems to be floating above the water

d30HWT2.png
Well, I do understand the feeling, but ... you're a mercenary, right? Never been to a sea battle?

2V00egs.png
Nope. I can be a horseman and an infantryman, but the sea, no way...

d30HWT2.png
Interesting...

d30HWT2.png
Don't you get seasick, Kalderina?

GpiCAfW.png
Oh, no! Er, or rather, I haven't been on a boat much, so...

GpiCAfW.png
My father told me boats were dangerous.

d30HWT2.png
Interesting...

GpiCAfW.png
So, I haven't been long enough on a boat to have felt sick.

GpiCAfW.png
This journey we're on right now is probably the longest I've been on.

d30HWT2.png
I see...

I watched idly at the sea.

Sitting on the deck like this, the sea breeze tickling my cheeks.

Watching the sea like this, I can feel the tension inside me relieving just a bit.

This mood lead me to wish that the purpose of this journey was a bit less serious...

d30HWT2.png
...!?

[The soundtrack changes to the standard tension music.]

I suddenly felt like we were watched.

Not just passively, but clearly by someone with an intention of some sort.

Thirst for blood...

But, as I looked around, I saw no signs of anybody.

GpiCAfW.png
...? What's wrong, Jamrock-san?

d30HWT2.png
Ah, no, nothing at all...

Probably just my imagination.

wz3wmwT.png
Heeey! I found it, I found it!

That moment, I heard a shout from the boat next door.

wz3wmwT.png
This is what they dropped! Come here and see!

It seems he found it. We left our boat, and moved on to his.

neldTYa.png

*creak*

d30HWT2.png
...?

GpiCAfW.png
...? What's wrong, Jamrock-san?

2V00egs.png
I've somehow got a bad feeling...

Sandrake said to me in a quiet voice.

A strange silence enveloped us.

d30HWT2.png
Hey, where did you go?

I softly query for the fisherman. He was here just a while ago, shouting at us, but I could no longer see him.

..........

There was no sign of anyone on the deck.

d30HWT2.png
..........

I reached for the sword on my back, and looked carefully around me.

d30HWT2.png
...!?

That moment, a smell I was most familiar with reached my nostrils.

The combined smell of iron and raw meat ... This is ...

d30HWT2.png
The smell of blood...

There was a blanket spread out in a corner of the deck.

d30HWT2.png
..........

I tore the blanket off.

d30HWT2.png
........

GpiCAfW.png
......!!

Kalderina let out a muffled scream.

2V00egs.png
Damn!

There was the fisherman, dead.

GT: The fisherman 's corpse of the previous year was rolling there.

It seems he was facing the water when his throat was slit. The water on the other side had been dyed red by the gushing blood.

As I stood at the edge, the smells of salt water and blood mixed together, and made me nauseous.

d30HWT2.png
...!!

*slice*

That moment, a claw flew through the air from the shadows.

I barely dodged it, and saw two masked claw people.

4i9vojH.png

d30HWT2.png
You, eh?

I notice the bloodstains, still fresh, on the other's hands, and draw my sword.

Here be a combat. Us against two claw people. Ended on turn 2. End result:

Jamrock: 140/150 HP, 80/102 WP

Kalderina: 83/100 HP, 96/105 WP

Sandrake: 179/180 HP, 96/104 WP

T7Ig20K.png

*thud*

As the remaining one slumped down, something fell from his person.

d30HWT2.png
...?

What I picked up was ... a stone mask.

This was not the one he wore.

These attackers from the Dark, Blood, and Claw had a mask like this too, but theirs was wooden.

This is the first time I've seen a stone mask like this.

The style and patterns vaguely remind me of the wooden ones. ~~

Is this what the fisherman was searching for?

Lscj6kk.png
Heeey!

d30HWT2.png
...?

KbB7e3U.png

vaxlOCi.png
What's the matter? You were taking a long time.

m0mdGYK.png
Phew... For an old man like me, just getting here is a chore.

As they step onto the deck, their faces twisted as they saw the situation.

vaxlOCi.png
W--What on earth happened to him?

m0mdGYK.png
H-hey, is he...

d30HWT2.png
He's dead. He was like that when we found him.

vaxlOCi.png
Hey, this is not funny. Why is he dead? ~~

m0mdGYK.png
A-anyway, we shouldn't touch this place. Call the guards and let them handle it.

d30HWT2.png
.............

The guards... I'd rather not be seen by them.

If we stay here, we'll have to face the guards sooner or later.

If the guard has seen one of my wanted posters...

We should probably leave...

But, we just got a lead ... I'd rather not part with it now.

  1. Leave.
  2. I don't want to deal with the guards.
  3. Can't do anything about the situation, so just meet the guards.

Number three.

Well, I can't say that we're not uninvolved, so I guess we need to talk with them.

m0mdGYK.png
You folks from the church, why don't you go to our village hall? I'd like to hear a bit of what happened.

It seems we don't have to meet the guards face-to-face after all. To tell the truth, I'm relieved.

d30HWT2.png
Understood.

m0mdGYK.png
Then...

The old man bowed to me, and left the boat with the other fisherman.

We should go too.

I picked up the mask and left the boat.

We walk around, talk to a few people. Tell them that there are dangerous claw people hiding in this very village, apparently. Where we got that bit of information from, I do not know.

We also try to be responsible and knock on the door of the boy's home, to tell him the news of his father, but he's not home.

Eventually we go back to the village hall.

*knock knock*

I knocked and entered the village hall.

d30HWT2.png
Sorry to intrude.

43UFJY9.png

KpWmMJx.png
Ah.

KpWmMJx.png
I heard the news. Please come in.

n9KrbK1.png

vaxlOCi.png
...........

m0mdGYK.png
So you came. ~~

d30HWT2.png
...........

m0mdGYK.png
So ... can you tell us what happened there?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

I summarised what had happened at the pier.

They both listened to the story without saying a word.

d30HWT2.png
Well, that's about it.

I said, as I had finished explaining up until the point they had stepped in.

m0mdGYK.png
I see...

vaxlOCi.png
Good heavens. Was he telling the truth then?

d30HWT2.png
Did he tell you anything? About the claw people he claimed he saw...

m0mdGYK.png
Hmm...

vaxlOCi.png
...........

vaxlOCi.png
Come to think of it...

d30HWT2.png
...!?

vaxlOCi.png
Come to think of it, he said that along with the beasts, there was a girl too.

GpiCAfW.png
...!

Kalderina was looking at me.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

I responded to her quietly, nodding.

d30HWT2.png
.................

What if ... that was Minvi?

This might be a big lead.

d30HWT2.png
Oh, right...

I took out the stone mask I had stored in my bosom.

d30HWT2.png
Did he speak anything of this?

vaxlOCi.png
...? I don't know...

m0mdGYK.png
I don't know at all either...

d30HWT2.png
Oh.

Now that I think about it, if he had shown the mask to them, he wouldn't have insisted that it was evidence, and gone to fetch it in the first place.

d30HWT2.png
.............

No matter how many times I look at it, I can't tell anything except that the mask is old.

m0mdGYK.png
Can I see it for a moment?

d30HWT2.png
Hm? Go ahead...

I handed the mask over to the old man.

m0mdGYK.png
Hm...

d30HWT2.png
Can you tell us anything?

m0mdGYK.png
No, nothing really...

Lscj6kk.png
Kyaaaaaaaaa!!

d30HWT2.png
...!?

Jdha3rS.png

N5isL2q.png
*slash*

Just as it had registered to me that masked claw people had suddenly entered the place, they already were ready to leap at us.

67CJb2k.png
Run!

vaxlOCi.png
Got it!

m0mdGYK.png
...!

The young man leapt out of the place with lightning speed, but the old man was too slow to get away.

N5isL2q.png
*slaaash*

The claw person nearest to him was already extending his arm.

67CJb2k.png
...!!

GpiCAfW.png
Kyaaaaa!

N5isL2q.png
Urg...

But, the expected blow never came.

The old man had raised the stone mask to block the attack, and the claw person was still, as if hesitating.

d30HWT2.png
...!

That moment, I jumped between the old man and the claw person, took the mask from the old man, and allowed the old man to run away.

N5isL2q.png
Kuh...

d30HWT2.png
ニメンダムディ、シチャヤンシジャメンア・・・? (Was this stone mask your objective?)

N5isL2q.png
チハンカイバ。 (Give it back.)

d30HWT2.png
イレイス、フナハゲイ。 (You killed a person already. You won't get away with this.)

d30HWT2.png
チケジャリヨウ・・・ (Tell us the reason why.)

N5isL2q.png
ニメンブヤチタオ。 (You don't need to know.)

N5isL2q.png
ホイクアユ、シアホイトンホイホァ・・・ (I thought you'd at least have a hunch, since you know our language.)

N5isL2q.png
シアイシア、ツオダシア・・・ (But looks like I was mistaken...)

N5isL2q.png
・・・スバ・・・ (Die.)

Fight. Two claw people religious assassins again.

Done on turn 2. End result:

Jamrock: 104/150 HP, 72/102 WP

Kalderina: 100/100 HP, 92/105 WP

Sandrake: 179/180 HP, 93/104 WP

NUTB59f.png

N5isL2q.png
...guh...

The last one collapsed onto the floor.

d30HWT2.png
Hey! Where did you take Minvi!?

I asked him, grabbing him by his shirt. He was on the verge of dying.

But he just slowly twisted his face to a curse, and murmured quietly thus: ~~~~

N5isL2q.png
ニメレレイ・・・トシワンダ・・・ (It's already the end ... for you humans ...)

d30HWT2.png
.............

In the end, we learnt nothing.

*thump thump thump*

PD7Da3e.png

vaxlOCi.png
We just called the guards. ...er, oh, he's dead?

d30HWT2.png
If the guards are coming, I guess we better leave.

d30HWT2.png
These guys were from a heretical sect called Dark, Blood, and Claw. You should be careful from now on.

He also mentions that it's a religion some claw people have, but I can't fit it into the sentence.

vaxlOCi.png
W--Wait a bit.

d30HWT2.png
...?

vaxlOCi.png
You avenged his death, right? Thank you.

d30HWT2.png
You're welcome.

d30HWT2.png
This thing may give you more trouble, so I hope you don't mind if we'll take it?

I said, pointing at the stone mask.

vaxlOCi.png
Oh, please do.

d30HWT2.png
Okay...

We left the place.

If you don't mind an intermission at this point, I'll just list all the random encounters we had:

  • One guard with guard dogs, times 4
  • One set of two guards
  • Bounty hunters
  • Blood-sucking bats
  • Wild dogs
  • Ruffians who wish to borrow some money from us, times 2. They offer to save my life if I give out the loan.

I used Jamrock's Persuasion skill on every guard encounter, or ran away if that didn't work. That's why Jamrock had work points so much lower than the others.

Oh, here's an image of a blood-sucking bat for you. Kind of cute, no?

Kyaaa!!

d30HWT2.png
...!?

We heard a woman's scream, muffled but definitely a scream.

2V00egs.png
That scream ... came from over there!

d30HWT2.png
Yeah... let's head that way!

We left the street and hurried towards the scream's apparent direction.

0NM5PaA.png

d30HWT2.png
We ended up quite far here...

d30HWT2.png
Wasn't it from around here?

Lscj6kk.png
Someone! Heeelp!

d30HWT2.png
This way!

We ran towards the voice.

FgvCTI3.png

cHRrwuQ.png
Hehehee, wait a bit!

aItQCZa.png
Hey, hey, we'll get you soon!

D9UCqxl.png
No! Don't come any closer!

cHRrwuQ.png
Oh, no. We're not heartless. We'll let you feel real good before you die.

GT: Oops, I'm trying to make myself think before I die. That's not to be an evil way.

aItQCZa.png
Indeed we will! Aren't you getting tired yet? You're slowing down already.

D9UCqxl.png
Ah ... aah...

cHRrwuQ.png
Hehehe, I can see your breast already.

aItQCZa.png
Come on, give us some more to feast our eyes on!

cHRrwuQ.png
I'll treat them real good too!

D9UCqxl.png
Who would ... to someone like you!

aItQCZa.png
Cute face, yet strong of will! I'm burning to know what sort of faces you'll make beneath me!

cHRrwuQ.png
Hey, I'm going first!

aItQCZa.png
What're you saying? First come, first served!

cHRrwuQ.png
Okay, if those are the rules, I'm game!

aItQCZa.png
All right!

D9UCqxl.png
Nooooo!!

cHRrwuQ.png
Heheh, you can boast about us to your friends on the other side!

aItQCZa.png
Two at a time, felt sooo good!

D9UCqxl.png
Someone!

cHRrwuQ.png
Heheh, you're not going to find anything except small towns and villages 'round here. Not many soldiers either!

d30HWT2.png
We'll save you. ~~~~~

yEvsJi9.png

D9UCqxl.png
...!?

cHRrwuQ.png
What the hell are you doing!

aItQCZa.png
Don't you go interrupting us when we were just gettin' to the good part!

cHRrwuQ.png
We're from a famous local band of thieves, you know! You'll end up dead in no time!

d30HWT2.png
............

aItQCZa.png
What's up with you? Frightened? Then get out of here already!

D9UCqxl.png
Please help!

*slide*

I drew the sword from my back.

GdVCaz9.png

cHRrwuQ.png
Oh? Are you for real?

aItQCZa.png
I'll teach you some manners!

Alongside their raving, they gripped their swords.

I could see from the way they held the blades that they had never run across anyone who's had the will to resist.

There's no help for these guys.

  1. Don't go easy on them.
  2. Just scare them off a bit.
  3. Give them a good shakedown, and hand them over to the guards.

Three's my lucky number.

Right... Probably a good option.

67CJb2k.png
Seei!

This is one of the nonsense syllables the Japanese apparently yell when they swing their swords.

I lowered my sword, and along with my yell, I closed the gap between us and struck them, lined up, onto the torso.

Of course, I had no intention of slicing them in half, so the hit was with the broad side of the blade.

cHRrwuQ.png
Ug...

The thugs go down in an instant.

GT: In a moment the rattles falter.

Next, I tie them up with the rope we had been carrying.

2V00egs.png
You're not half bad.

d30HWT2.png
Well, we should hand them over to the guards...

d30HWT2.png
We should find some evidence for their crimes.

fGc8cvO.png
There's ...

fGc8cvO.png
There's plenty of that just a bit deeper in this forest.

fGc8cvO.png
My friends they killed...

d30HWT2.png
.............

fGc8cvO.png
Thank you. You saved me.

d30HWT2.png
You're welcome.

d30HWT2.png
There's a village nearby. We'll escort you.

fGc8cvO.png
E-er...

fGc8cvO.png
I have... a request...

d30HWT2.png
...? Well, if it's something we can do, then...

fGc8cvO.png
You look like travellers.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
Er, would you take me along?

d30HWT2.png
What?

fGc8cvO.png
You see ... I have nowhere to go ... and most of all, I want to pay you back!

d30HWT2.png
Er... well...

fGc8cvO.png
Please! I know I don't look like much, but I can throw knives! I'm sure you'll find me useful!

d30HWT2.png
.............

The girl just, out of the blue, proposed such a thing.

  1. Take her along.
  2. Don't take her along.

d30HWT2.png
All right.

fGc8cvO.png
Eh!?

d30HWT2.png
I'll say it again, but it's a dangerous journey. If you can take that...

fGc8cvO.png
Will really you take me along?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
Thank you!

fGc8cvO.png
Ah, My name's Pamela! Nice to meet you!

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

Pamela joined our party!

fGc8cvO.png
Er, before that...

fGc8cvO.png
Is there a town or village nearby?

d30HWT2.png
There is, yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
Could you tell me the way there? I need to ... arrange some burials...

d30HWT2.png
It's right that way. We'll show you there.

fGc8cvO.png
Thanks.

fGc8cvO.png
Thanks. Could you wait for me a bit?

d30HWT2.png
We're staying at the temple church near this village. If you really mean to join, come there.

fGc8cvO.png
Sheesh, I do mean it!

fGc8cvO.png
I'll meet you at the temple church, then!

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

She left us as she said that.

d30HWT2.png
Well then, I guess we should go too.

All done, let's end this scenario. Though I forgot to search for the boy, to properly give him the news about his father.

d30HWT2.png
Well then, I guess I'll say a word or two to the people who helped me today.

ZN6QpXu.png

GpiCAfW.png
How did I do today?

d30HWT2.png
Well...

d30HWT2.png
You backed up me well.

GpiCAfW.png
Thank you very much, Jamrock-san.

GpiCAfW.png
I too think that I did well today.

Kalderina smiled happily.

z6LYzIc.png

2V00egs.png
Thanks for the hard work, Jamrock!

d30HWT2.png
Oh yeah, Sandrake.

d30HWT2.png
You did a nice job today!

2V00egs.png
You won't get anything from me with flattery, you know.

2V00egs.png
Well, I'll try to live up to your expectations then...

d30HWT2.png
Well then, everybody. Let's get back to the temple church!

Here's the complete minimap again. Village hall on lower left, long horizontal line is beach, pier sticking out north.

Not if she can't gut those mooks in a second, I would think.

Why are you not cutting open the guards? I forget if you killed any earlier, but is that tracked in the random encounters so that the kingdom will be angry with you over that despite you presumably getting your name cleared later in the game?

Just a whim. They're my former co-workers after all. Don't think it affects anything game-wise.

The game seems to track something alignment-related though. See the end-of-the-day priest encounter.

I better explain this front row business to you sometime.

d30HWT2.png
It seems Pamela has already arrived.

d30HWT2.png
I should probably pay her a visit.

I knocked on her door.

fGc8cvO.png
Jamrock?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
It's open.

d30HWT2.png

As she said, the door was not locked, so I opened it.

fGc8cvO.png
I trust that you'll still let me come along?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
Er... well, thank you.

d30HWT2.png
No need to thank.

fGc8cvO.png
Not for saving me. Well, for that too, but that you're letting me travel with you.

d30HWT2.png
It's nothing to thank me for. I think that by joining us, we'll just drag you into danger.

fGc8cvO.png
I don't mind.

d30HWT2.png
............

fGc8cvO.png
You see... the people I travelled with, had that kind of fate. ~~

I'm sure that me alone, I wouldn't have been able to save them. ~~~~

d30HWT2.png
That's not...

fGc8cvO.png
I know. I'll probably incur some kind of punishment for saying these things...

fGc8cvO.png
But... well... the people I could call my family... you know?

d30HWT2.png
.............

I had nothing to reply with.

The pain inside her must be the same I experienced five years ago.

fGc8cvO.png
So... please just let me travel with you.

fGc8cvO.png
Anyway, I'm just glad I have something to do.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah... that's right.

fGc8cvO.png
So, er, I hope we'll get along?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah.

fGc8cvO.png
And, well... Actually, I don't yet know what you're travelling for.

d30HWT2.png
Now that you mention it...

I explained the situation to Pamela.

d30HWT2.png
And that's it.

fGc8cvO.png
Ohh...

Pamela had listened to my explanation with her eyes wide.

fGc8cvO.png
It sounds like there's a lot at stake...

d30HWT2.png
............

fGc8cvO.png
Well, you can count me in! I have plenty of faith in my knife-handling skills!

She said, brimming with confidence.

d30HWT2.png
...............

I do wonder whether she really understands the situation.

Kg67XYw.png

  1. "It's not a game."
  2. "Good to have you in."
  3. "But you couldn't defeat the robbers?"

I'm curious...

d30HWT2.png
...How come you couldn't defeat the robbers, if you have such confidence in your abilities?

fGc8cvO.png
I didn't have my knives at hand then.

fGc8cvO.png
Had I had my knives with me then...

fGc8cvO.png
...........

d30HWT2.png
I'm sorry.

fGc8cvO.png
No need... Never mind. I know you must be curious of my skill.

fGc8cvO.png
Well, don't worry and just trust me!

d30HWT2.png
.............

fGc8cvO.png
What? Don't you trust me?

d30HWT2.png
No...

d30HWT2.png
Anyway, just sleep for now. We'll start tomorrow.

fGc8cvO.png
Yeah. Then, good night.

I'm getting some strong travelling-circus vibes from this girl.

We visit the priest for some soul-searching again...

yDgBVZX.png
I think that you actually acted in a positive light.

yDgBVZX.png
Also, in my assessment, it seems you handled the situations in a safe way.

All right, good to know. Bedtime for me.

d30HWT2.png
We somehow managed in one piece today too.

Tomorrow, we'll reach the central parts of the kingdom.

d30HWT2.png
..............

It'd be nice if we got some leads...

Would it ... be possible that I ... could replace ... Tim Timaya-san?

d30HWT2.png
...............

She was saying that.

I can't replace anyone myself either. ~~

But, I might consider Minvi to be ... as important as Tim Timaya.

I wish I had just been able to say that to her.

d30HWT2.png
Tim Timaya...

Once, if I just thought of her, a sharp pain ran through my heart, but... now, that too has dulled.

For the heart, time is the best yet the most cruel doctor. I've heard that somewhere.

I know firsthand that it is true.

When I was a child, in the village of Zaurusride, a girl one year older than me arrived alone with her father.

That was Tim Timaya.

In the village, as we were relatively close in age, me and Tim Timaya often played together. ~~~

When did I start thinking of Tim Timaya, whom I had treated as the big sister, as a woman?

Was it the tears I first saw on her, at the age of 12, when her father died?

And then... some years later... I grew to be taller than her...

What's up? You are late.

d30HWT2.png
Sorry. Dad was yelling at me.

Zx4erFR.png
Did you skip training again?

d30HWT2.png
Not really 'skip'... I just overslept a bit.

Zx4erFR.png
He's just worrying about you...

d30HWT2.png
He didn't let me go until I told him you were waiting.

Zx4erFR.png
Oh my.

d30HWT2.png
He told me to come apologise to you, while kicking me...

Zx4erFR.png
*chuckle* ... That's very like him.

Zx4erFR.png
So ... What's up today? Shouldn't you be having fencing practice tonight?

d30HWT2.png
Yeah... I was supposed to. ~~

d30HWT2.png
...........

Times that won't come back...

Just that ... despite that ... one can still become happy again. ~~~

Minvi made me remember that.

d30HWT2.png
..............

Let's sleep now... We need to save Minvi, as soon as possible...

dmyM8Sz.png

All right, let's head to the chapel to prepare for the departure.

7olItGp.png

GpiCAfW.png
Ah, good morning, Jamrock-san.

d30HWT2.png
Oh, morning.

d30HWT2.png
It seems we barely managed to figure out where Minvi went through.

GpiCAfW.png
That's right.

d30HWT2.png
But, that alone doesn't do much good...

GpiCAfW.png
Yes. But, we shouldn't rely on guesswork more than necessary.

d30HWT2.png
Yeah...

d30HWT2.png
Guess it can't be helped. We should investigate around here until we get some good intelligence.

GpiCAfW.png
I agree...

GpiCAfW.png
But, we are heading towards the kingdom's central parts now, including the Altamina castle town. We should be more careful of our actions from now on.

d30HWT2.png
Right... There should be many more guards too.

d30HWT2.png
Well, no use of worrying about it right now. Do you have any nearby towns that might have a connection with the case?

GpiCAfW.png
Ah, yes.

GpiCAfW.png
Nearby, there is... East Comet, West Comet, Old Comet, and the port of Jakash.

GpiCAfW.png
In the town of East Comet, there is a textile mill where the majority of workers are claw people.

GpiCAfW.png
I am told that many of the workers there have an uncertain past.

GpiCAfW.png
In a place like that, we may be able to get some good information.

GpiCAfW.png
In the town of West Comet, there is a man by the name Salvatore who is said to run the underworld.

GpiCAfW.png
He is supposed to have all the information relating to both the humans and the claw people. ~~

GpiCAfW.png
If we can get in touch with him, we might be able to get some good leads.

GpiCAfW.png
In the town of Old Comet, there is a famous scholar called Gainsborough. He studies the claw people.

GpiCAfW.png
If we meet him, we may be able to get detailed information on the Order of Dark, Blood, and Claw.

GpiCAfW.png
In the port of Jakash, we have received a report that some suspicious claw people came ashore on a small boat.

GpiCAfW.png
It is possible that the claw people who left the village of Temze with Minvi-oneesama on boat came to the port of Jakash. We could get some leads there.

GpiCAfW.png
Oh, and then, there was a message delivered to the temple church, addressed to you.

d30HWT2.png
...? To me?

GpiCAfW.png
Yes. From Harlin-san. "If you have the opportunity, come see me."

d30HWT2.png
That would probably mean the Altamina castle town then.

GpiCAfW.png
And that is everything.

JNZ8gsZ.png

Oh, my. Five places to choose from.

East Comet, West Comet, Old Comet, Jakash, or Altamina? Voting open.

Also, same question as last time: full strength, or leave one of Kalderina, Sandrake, Pamela out?

I'd like to visit Altamina, then. Hopefully the textile mill won't go up inflames.

Is there any benefit to not going in with full strength?

Uh, this game focuses on replays then. Pity we have only one chance to shine.

Let's go for the maffia stereotype, good old Salvatore. West Comet is my vote.

If you are going to translate all the dialogue and stuff, why not actually translate the game ? :3
