I think everything worked out for the best. VD went on to administer his own site and do whatever he wants with it (ITS) with loads of future potential in it while DU got what he wanted, a Codex filled with lulz and a lot of hits-per-day.

I joined in after all the drama and actually like DU but I wouldn't have anything against VD gracing the Codex with some good old-fashioned anti-dumbfuckery fascist policies. Oh, and Rosh could come back to make his famous long-winded rants. Just sharing a case of my wishful thinking.

Was the freedom of speech really limited during the VD period or was it just worthless garbage that got retardo'd/locked/banned most of the time?

I don't know. Like you, I started lurking/posting just after the whole ordeal.

His detractors seem to think that the Codex would have been suffocated from his policies and eventually died down. Others say DU's way of running things has destroyed what the Codex used to stand for.

What is clear, however, is that a new elite needs to be rebuilt. So that people will stop lamenting the loss of so and so poster and have new, active elite posters to worship and look up to.

A good example of the kind of poster I am talking about is zomg. He's just a perfect poster in every kind of way. You don't have to agree with his posts, but they are always intelligently written and concise. He doesn't engage in any of the circlejerking that goes on around here, and most importantly, he never bullshits about things he doesn't know about.

I, too, want to attest to zomg's status as a fucking quality poster. If only he bothered with an actual username...

And I'd like to mention Clockwork Knight. He started out as an utter moron but has develped into a more than decent poster. And while I still know people who scoff at his posts and dismiss them out of hand I personally think he's the poster who went through the best development. While there are certainly lots of better posters most of them already started out as good posters. I often disagree with him but he's one of the few who managed not to lose but to earn my respect. For what little that is worth. A true story of incline.
There should also be an honorable mention of TWD, since his sexname change he's become a lot less creepy...
