So for shits and giggles I decided to look for ancient mmos that were more than likely dead, but it turns out theres a community owned server up thats f2p. Amazingly enough they're also still balancing the game, although I haven't done research as to if they've added significant content outside of item properties.

I have absolutely no experience with this game other than dipping my feet in the water, and I was curious if anyone else here had played it in the distant past and would be interested in "Neocron 2" as they're calling it.

I always mixed up Anarchy Online and Neocron. I haven't tried Neocron. I remember reading about it years ago.

This is the famous day when Necron (2?) became F2P:

Here's a poster in the rockpapershotgun forums who was following the F2P announcement:

Originally developed by Reakktor Media GmbH, Neocron Community Edition is the continuation of the Neocron 2 Project.

Handed the keys to the servers and source code of Neocron 2.2 in April 2012, the Neocron Team is dedicated to keeping Neocron alive and pushing to realise its abundant potential. In agreement with Kirk Lenke, former CEO of Reakktor Media, the Neocron Team now control every aspect of the Neocron you know and love; its operation, support and continued development.

Built around a core of long serving Gamemasters the Neocron Team is staffed entirely by volunteers from the Neocron Community.

Neocron Community Edition is truly unique, a vast open game world with a deep gritty cyberpunk atmosphere, now developed both by and for its extremely dedicated community.

neocron in beta was the best game ever. lots of features, lots of people, lots of everything.
the more the beta advanced the more features were being stripped. at launch neocron was a ghost of itself.

i went back a couple years later. even more features had been removed, just a bunch of people wandering around, no more gang fights in pepper park, no more strippers in pepper park, 90% of the npc shops had been closed down who knows why. bugs aplenty. i logged once and my psi character had a rocket launcher and 1000 ammo in his inventory.

Most games in beta have that happen. Is why I'd never want to play a beta. It's hard enough to accept the changes coming after launch. I'm not even lying. MMO's change routinely even when they're live.

Never heard about this game. Love the visuals. Concept seems potentially fun. What's it like?
Remember it's free to play and only about 2 gb download. But since I haven't played it myself, I'm tryiing to find recent youtube videos. Found some more recent videos, if you're interested in watching them:

The videos continue by this youtube poster. Here's the last one (Dec 15 2015):

no, in betas features are promised and never delivered. neocron had those features already and they had been removed one after another.

I'm saying I've seen it before. Is why I won't do betas. If large changes (or removal) can happen after launch--like NGE in SWG--why would I try the game when it's in beta and something like that's even more likely? I know some companies have smoother betas and not as many things change and it's more of a stress test, but IMHO betas are inferior.

However, these days a lot of MMO's are doing "open betas" and those aren't really betas anymore. Things are different. It's hard for me to classify it. Here's a video about it:

A lot of games, MMO or not, simply never LEAVE beta.
