Buy an island and actually live like you are the master of your own small realm... feel what its like to look upon all mainlanders as degenerates who dont know any better.

That's what I'd get.

His Hollywood house looks like a showroom for selling cars, or corporate business meets. It ain't no home.

Huh, that doesnt give off "a swede lives here" feeling at all, could easily be a Kardashian place (for good example of how rich swedes usually behave: Ingvar Kamprad)

I guess Notch gone total Hollywood after the deal.

Swedes are not wiser or more sober than anyone else don't kid yourself. The emptiness and blandness of this house gives off strong modern Scandinavian vibes. I would not be surprised if half the furniture turns out to be from IKEA.

The owner of IKEA himself is an exception that happens to be a Swede. Living currently in Switzerland, I wonder why. His home was a few streets across mine.

Bro, i know a guy that lives a couple of miles from me who won around 5 million at that euro lottery (he was featured in the news) a few years ago and he still lives as he did before and still drives the bus, he didnt go total Hollywood because he got rich along with a few other newly rich people i heard of, you forget or either dont know of the the strong influence of the Jantelaw in Sweden.

Swedes are generally not a very show-off kind of people.

Ikea. He lives in Switzerland for this very purpose.

Do consider that most people in the world aren't very show off. Its the Meds, and Hollywood being a meds enclaves (jewish and Italians) that gives this impression. Also natural selection. The rich Swedes flock out as much as possible out of Sweden, starting with IKEA dude, leaving you with those that don't care much for their money in the first place.

I was reading a story on how miserly the Ikea guy is and I was a little embarrassed for him. He does things like swipe salt and pepper bags from restaurants. People in the comments section were asking, what is the point of earning all that money, if you can't enjoy yourself even a little? You can't take it with you when you die. The new rich do have bad taste and they do go over the top, but this Ikea guy goes too far in his own way.

To guys like him, earning money is just a way to keep the score. If he was 40 years younger he could just play EVE online and get exactly the same kind of enjoyment.

What I don't get is that he still lives in a relatively expansive house. It might seem modest but it's epalinges in Switzerland, costs likely more than a million. That's not mentioning the estates, far more luxurious, he has in other countries including France and Sweden. It's incoherent. He's either a PR poseur or already going senile, he used to maintain a far more expansive lifestyle in his youth, when he had less money.

I read an old expression regarding this phenomenon: some people are great at business, some people are great at being frugal, those who possess both attributes end up stupendously wealthy.

The answer is simple: he enjoys saving money.

Once you go that far (swipe salt and pepper packets) it's no longer simply frugal it's actually highly disrespectful. To own so much money and pretend you don't have access to it while hordes of rich opportunists make even more money from your wealth whilst looking for better ways to avoid paying tax.

At some point other people are going to get control of that money (inherit) and it is probably going to be wasted on even worse things than it is now and he will have moral responsibility for that in death

I'm not jealous, I'm disappointed.

If he doesn't put some real thought into his situation, at best he'll useless to society, at worst he'll be either a drain or actively destructive to it.

Nah i am more entertained. Notch the great internet hipster. The self righteous "Indy" developer that tends to act high and mighty SOLD OUT!!! NOT ONLY THAT he sold out to mother fucking Microsoft.
If that is not funny then i don't know what is and instead of living in his birth place and try and help develop the growing developer community in Sweden he moves to America to buy a gaudy mansion.

That shits funny.

Hipsters are always rich, that's why they're hipsters. Or at least coming from an upper middle-class upbringing.

I bet there's some crappy Minecraft movie being written right now, and Notch will have a completely surprising and unexpected cameo.

No, the movie has been abandoned.

There's a crappy Minecraft TV series being written right now where Notch might have a completely surprising and unexpected cameo.

Lots of retardation in this thread.

He didn't actually get 2.5 billion in hard cash. He got it the way most of these things work, via stock ownership. So he will now spend a lot of time poring over investment details, hiring the best financial services to invest his money, and if he did retain ownership in Minecraft making sure the company/game is profitibe, or whatever he needs to ensure his stock value remains high. Because even a small shift in stock value can result in him loosing hundreds of millions in real money. If the company implodes, so does his fortune.

WRONG!
Bloomberg said:
Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft plans to pay for the acquisition with cash held overseas, said Peter Wootton, a company spokesman. That would have favorable tax consequences for the software maker, which has its vast majority of cash and short-term investments outside the U.S.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...y-minecraft-maker-mojang-for-2-5-billion.html

Check your facts, don't be Retarded Noob.

Microsoft smartly used this opportunity to get rid of some om the money they have made outside the US that would get taxed heavily if they bring it across the border.

You're right I didn't really research this transaction, but this is how much of these acquisitions work. Still, did they mention MS will be paying for the entire 2.5 billion in cash? I would wager at least part of the acquisition will be paid in stocks. It's just not feasible to move that much cash around. Not to mention sudden shifts in currency can devalue a transaction by large amounts, relatively speaking.

The only thing he doesnt skimp on is on his girlfriends, aviator shades and frontline tickets to concerts and raves
