There was that action game that used minecraft graphics. Procedurally generated (infinite?) world where you just go around and kill stuff. We had a thread about it but i forgot its name -.- Might fit your bill.
3079 perhaps?

Also check out the sequel 3089, which has a non-blocky artstyle:

I've played both of these a little bit, and they fit the "just roaming around murdering shit (or getting murdered if I wander into the wrong place) and finding loot and new places to explore" criteria. Nice random loot systems, and 3089's loot is modular so you can put all kinds of weapon combinations together, with tons of stats.

"Open world" is relative. Is something like Divinity 2 that much more 'open' than Torchlight 2?

Not much more, but still more. I liked Damned Registrations carnival analogy. In a carnival you are in the center, able to look around in 360 degrees equidistant from perhaps dozens of different 'rides' or things to do, any of which the individual 'player' can decide to go try if they want, and if they like that ride, they can go right back and do it again.

Torchlight 2 is nauseatingly linear, just like Diablo II. Pre-determined links between RNG maps just make it more annoying to find the next stairset or loot chest because you have to 'mow' the entire map/dungeon to find these things. A tedious design mechanic that makes the game seem longer than it is by forcing the player to aimlessly backtrack, sometimes across an entire dead map, in order to progress.

Just play Path Of Exile and shut up.

Many of us put in our 2-3 months trying PoE; it's shit. I loved it at first for its seemingly deep skills and socket system, but the game has no replay value whatsoever. The H&S part is well implemented* (until your AoE build of choice gets arbitrarily nerfed by the devs that week in the name of build variety™), but otherwise it's a tedious and boring grind-timesink, especially the end-game maps. So you STFU.

Well, Divinity 2 still has a lot of optional content you don't experience in any fixed order.
It has diablo-style generated loot (a bit of a parody of Diablo's system, actually), decent enough build diversity, can be atmospheric at times and is pretty lulzy.

Its not it although this looks sweet. I remembered the game and it was Cube World. We had a thread on it and collective opinion was that its still in alpha. Quick google check shows that no new version has been released. :/

So you got out of it 2-3 months worth of gameplay. What the fuck else do you need, it's not an MMORPG.

Also, I can fucking guarantee you played softcore, you little pussy. Stop playing hack'n'slash games on softcore FFS! Of course you lose fun if you remove any challenge.

Not saying PoE is perfect, I stopped playing it a while ago, but give me a better alternative. D3? Torchlight 2? I laugh in your face!

Go fuck yourself douche-nozzle. You're the only scrub on this board still playing that crap game, oh wait, even you quit. Astroturfing cunt that you are.

I played hardcore and it sucked worse, nothing like spending a week building a character to die from rubber banding because dibens' mom is downloading donkey porn down the block.

Thank her for the 'challenge' from me k?

Yeah, Divinity II should satisfy you.
Divinity 2 is shit, 1 is better. E.y.E melee is good, Arcanum on real time if you like being bored or STALKER with a knife.

So much anger. You could spend all that energy on sucking less. I bet you don't even play ironmode and make full teams in party based rpgs. Fucking cashualfags.

Akuma: Demon Spawn (Lamentation Sword) looks like it may fit, though I haven't played it.

Decided to take a look at it myself

So, Akuma: Demon Spawn. Basically, it's a Korean Diablo clone with a twist.

The twist is that you control three characters instead of one.

There is a list of items in the manual, so I guess they are not randomly generated. Items are p. boring though, even those that you cannot get from a vendor. +X to Str, +Y Dex, etc.

Stats and inventory.

The world is a bunch of connected areas, so it's kinda open.

This is the map of the 'real world', apparently there is also an unreal world aka underworld, where Satan is located. An interesting bit from the manual:

In the underworld you must come to understand the politics of who is fighting against who and decide which side to join. There are the ex-lieutenants of Satan struggling for independence from Satan while fighting each other, there are the half-breeds part demon part human, and there are the humans – some of whom have thrown their lot in with the devils. It is your task to decide who has the knowledge you seek about the Blood Sword, its powers, and its whereabouts.

Oh come on, it wasn't bad.

It kind of was. I mean, all I remember about it is that it was clunky and broken as sheeeeeeeeeet.

Of course, it also had a gamebraking bug I never managed to patch (probably because the patch file on my CD was borked). Otherwise I think I would've finish it.

Let me guess, you had the game from some sort of PC World Computer or whatever was the magazine and it crashed during a conversation with Obi Wan Kenobi? :troll:

I remember I had to ask my dad to look for the patch at work because I still didn't have broadband internet connection back then. And it was only available on some korean site, l0l

Damn, that conversation made me download and try to finish it once more. Thanks for nothing, Roxor!:rpgcodex:

Torchlight 2 is a string of samey maps with monsters to kill and that is it. Divine Divinity 2 isn't exactly open on an Elder Scrolls fashion but it is way nearer to a traditional RPG than a Diablo clone.
