Commenters on other, less reputable gaming sites are treating Patrice Desilets like he's some martyr of the incline. They portray him as if he made awesome games, then Ubisoft fired him because they wanted to make shit games. I like to think we know better on the Codex.

Having said that, AC 2 and Brotherhood were really good games. Desilets may have been responsible for 2, but he left during the development of Brotherhood, and it is Brotherhood that I think was the best of the AC series. Also, the music and the atmosphere were probably the best things about those games, and I don't think its fair to give Desilets credit for them.

He worked on good games before that. He also left pretty late during the development of Brootherhood and considering the series went to shit afterwards......

Were the assassin's creed games any good btw?
AC 2 is very good. AC 1 was extremely repetitive and everything after AC2 is just the same game with more lame gimmicks.
This.
For me AC2 is the king of popamole. Twas my first AC and I actually enjoyed it. I enjoyed Brotherhood too although that is where the series started to be annoying. Everything else was bsb. I played AC1 last and was shocked how teeeerible the game is compared to AC2. Couldn'get through the first two hours.

"Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit.

Pretty sure you were an at-will employee bro and you could be fired for any reason.

Lol this is great, apparently there was a clause in the contract that would have given Desilets the rights to his IP and game, UbiSoft didn't decide to outright "cancel" it, but "idenfinitely suspended" the project instead: https://twitter.com/supererogatory/status/334724774829912064
Ubisoft "indefinitely suspending production" on 1666 is way for them to cancel the game w/o giving back Desilets his IP as per his contract.

Desilets contract specifies that IP rights revert to him in event of the game's cancellation, similar to the arrangement Del Toro had w/ THQ

http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/7/4308980/patrice-desilets-departs-ubisoft-a-second-time

"Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft," Desilets told Polygon. "I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings."

"This was not my decision."

"Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game."

Both their games from the THQ days were cancelled. Rumors are Underdog was apparently cancelled right after Ubisoft acquierd it and the team put on Far Cry 4. And 1666 was cancelled just now.
Context, motherfucker. Do you have it.

Just end the damn Quebec subsidies, put Ubisoft bankrupt. End them, I can't believe we are paying them endless millions so they can make millions.
Ontario has even higher subsidies than Quebec now. That is why Jade Raymond has a studio she earned by demonstrating years of quality leadership in Toronto.

I feel a bit lost. Am I supposed to know who this Desilets person is?
He created Assassin's Creed then told Ubi to somersault of a rooftop onto a pile of dicks and left for greener pastures at THQ to create his Magnum Opus AC-killer.

Then Ubi bought him, canceled his popamole and fired him :troll:
Pretty sure AC was Jade's game and that's the only reason people bought it.

:necro: Wow! http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...66-amsterdam-rights-calls-off-ubisoft-lawsuit

Patrice Désilets gains 1666 Amsterdam rights, calls off Ubisoft lawsuit

Assassin's Creed co-creator Patrice Désilets has gained control of 1666 Amsterdam, the open world historical adventure IP he was developing at Ubisoft before he was fired.

jpg

No longer désolé.

The deal follows a protracted legal battle over the IP's ownership - and no love lost between Désilets and his former employer.

Today, it seems both sides have shaken hands and made up. Désilets now has "creative and business control" of the project, and has also withdrawn his "legal action against Ubisoft from the Superior Court of Québec", a joint statement proclaimed.

But, for the moment, 1666 Amsterdam remains in limbo. Désilets is deep into development of his new project Ancestors: the Humankind Odyssey at his startup studio Panache Digital Games, which will remain his immediate focus.

Here are the full statements from both sides:

"Putting aside our past differences, Patrice and I are above all interested in the creation of video games and the evolution of this medium of entertainment," said Yannis Mallat, Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft Montréal and Toronto. "This agreement is good news for everyone.

"Ubisoft's creative teams are currently working on innovative projects that will mark our industry for years to come. This is precisely where we want to focus our energy, on our teams, to continue what we have been building in Quebec for nearly 20 years. As we have always said, Patrice is a talented designer and we wish him all the best in the development of his future endeavours."

Désilets added:

"I'm glad Ubisoft and I were able to come to an agreement that will allow me to obtain the rights to project 1666 Amsterdam. I will now devote myself entirely to the development of Ancestors: the Humankind Odyssey, my next game with Panache Digital Games.

"This is what matters most to me today: making the best games and showing the world the creative talent of Quebecers. I also wish every success to the Ubisoft teams."

1666 Amsterdam was in development at THQ Montreal and then Ubisoft - although never formally revealed - under Désilets' leadership when the director was unceremoniously terminated back in May 2013.

The ownership of 1666 Amsterdam has been under legal contention ever since.

After so much effort to regain the IP, Désilets may well return to the project at a later date. Alternatively, or for now at least, regaining the rights to the IP from his former employer may be enough.

Désilets' original idea for the game was for it to be "the new Assassin's Creed". Whether that is still possible - or even palatable - now, especially with Désilets' small team, is a whole other matter.

I'm no expert on these matters, but to me it sounds like Ubisoft basically won. They got the lawsuit withdrawn, held the IP hostage for three years, and gave it back to Desilets only now that he went indie and is thus no longer capable of making the AC killer he originally wanted this game to be - not to mention that the entire "AC killer" ship has long since sailed, too.

If it means no more AC clones, I'd say the collective human race has won.

Revealed at Reboot Develop:

Footage from the unreleased 1666 Amsterdam, whose rights just returned to creative director Patrice Desilets.

The game would have been for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the footage comes from a build of that era, 2 years ago. It would have become next (now current)-gen if the studio had not closed.

The game's theme is "be worse than the devil," which is why the protagonist can control animals traditionally associated with black magic.

This footage shows a real player running through the game in-engine.

Only America and 3rd world shit holes have the concept of at-will employment. First-world nations require cause to terminate an employee without notice.
